  1. Humminbird 798ci SI Combo This is a very thick weed bed point (on the right) a Hydrilla-like weed with Side Imaging: This is the Down Imaging view of that point that shows the individual weed stems: This is the same with the combo DI and 2D views:
  2. This is the same brush pile as above that I posted a picture of before full pool and what it looks like with Down Imaging and traditional 2D sonar. Humminbird 1198c SI Combo
  3. Sooo, you "re-invented the wheel" and copied the Pro Kon Troll and similar devices on the market for hand steer trolling motors: http://www.prokontroll.com/prokontroll.html and this one: http://www.thmarine.com/products/Trolling-Motor-Accessories/Trolling-Motor-Extension-Handle
  4. 1. Go S-L-O-W 2. Go small 3. get away from the shore and off the shore
  5. The Humminbird Combo units have memory card readers to add mapping products like Navionics and Lakemaster. Lowrance Combo units have card readers also for Navionics, Insite and more. Neither come with the mapping cards, that is a separate purchase. A combo unit has sonar and GPS. A unit that is a GPS trackplotter and has background mapping capability is called a Chart Plotter.
  6. You didn't understand what I ment by "sight fishing". I watch the Side Imaging display and fish for the fish I see displayed. If they are 100' away from the boat in 30' of water, I see them and cast to where they are. If I am in 5' or less of water that is dingy to muddy, and the fish are 50' from the boat, I see them displayed and cast to where they are. That is why I used " " With the Lowrance Down Scan unit, Raymarine Dragonfly, Humminbird Down Imaging units, or whatever Garmin calls their new similar model, you only see what is under the boat about in the same coverage area as the 2D sonar. Only the Lowance Structure Scan and Humminbird Side Imaging has the type of "to the sides" coverage with the picture-like images. I personally don't use Down Imaging for other than getting comparison images for sonar discussions like this. The coverage is just too limited. For the inexperienced sonar user, Down Imaging/Down Scan/ DownView, etc. does help interpret what the 2D sonar is showing.
  7. Well you have to be where stuff is to see stuff. The Lowrance units are very good at showing stuff with Down Scan which is what yours has as well as traditional 2D sonar.
  8. Structure Scan does the Down Scan feature and the Side Scan feature. The unit itself comes with a 2D transducer for traditional sonar. You need both transducers for all functions.
  9. I use SIde Imaging at the console and bow all the time. It shows what is under the boat and what is away from under the boat. I basicaly "sight fish" all the time no matter what time of year and water depth. With a Humminbird Side Imaging unit, it comes with everything to make it fully functional for Side Imaging, Down Imaging, 2D sonar, and GPS/ mapping. You may want to add other accessories to customize it for your installation. Yea, I would say I like it and it is very helpful. I have three Side Imaging units.
  10. The main initial setting is to learn how to use Simulator so you can practice with the unit settings before getting on the water.
  11. Learn the SI readout setting so you will have full width screen for SI like this. It is in the menu sonar tab:
  12. That would be Gordonsville Lake (Bowlers Mill) and Northeast Creek Lake. Those are locality permits. You still need a state fishing license if you are 16 years old or older.
  13. The 500 and 700 series are being discontinued and replaced by the 600 series. There will be one 700 series kept. 718. The 800, 900, and 1100 series are being updated and will be the same as the 2013 models but with a faster processor. Those models will have a "9" at the end of the model number-- 899, 999, 1199, etc The two new models for the 2014 model year are designed for the bluewater market. Those are the ONIX and ION. They have a couple of size displays in each model. As far as the 598ci HD SI Combo, that is a better unit than its replacement, the 698ci HD SI. The new model has a narrower display which is what you do not want with a Side Imaging unit. The equivelent 798ci HD SI is the best in that screen size since it has the same size display as the 598 but has the additional capability of connectivity to other units to share data and accessories, has three quick view buttons, and dual card readers.
  14. Guntersville Lake, Nickajack, or Chickamauga--all Tenn River lakes in Southeastern Tenn, and Northeastern Alabama
  15. False, the junction of the transom and hull bottom should be supported.
  16. I only needed to see the first picture. You used the transom mount for the Humminbird transducer that is solid instead of the one that trips when impacted. You got what you rigged for. You need to move the transducer either left or right of the trailer bunk. BUT your trailer bunks don't match your hull, or your guide-ons don't position the hull on the trailer correctly. It looks like the strake on the right of hull bottom is on the bunk instead of beside it. Fix that before you choose a transducer position. You should either replace the mount with the XNT or get the Transducer Shield and Saver SBB-3 to use with that mount. One more thing, do not put the transducer in line with a hull strake, that is the worse place to have it due to the turbulence they create. It should be centered between two of them
  17. No scoop, but Humminbird has new products for the 2014 model year and now the ones they are replacing are up to $1000 cheaper while supplies last. Even the new models are less that the former ones of the same class Lowrance has dropped the prices of their units a couple hundred due to the above.
  18. It sure is Hunting Run. There are several dozen places like that. There are 4 of them within 100 yards. I went around the lake and got waypoints for a lot of the interesting places and did a video describing the waypoints. This one was too deep to see it but shows the effort put into creating those brush piles. They did the pile and put a whole tree on top of it.
  19. I did the same when the 1198 first came out.in Jan 2011
  20. The model number is on the box to the right. 798
  21. You can purchase the split shank treble hooks for your blades. http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/mustad-treble-hooks/810214.aspx
  22. I use the Silver Buddy or Krazy Blade depending on the fall rate and retrieve resistance I want. I have some of the other brands, but rarely use them. Caught this one with a 1/4 oz Krazy Blade about 11 months ago: The conditions are getting right for that presentation again.
  23. I'll add one more thing for those that are not familiar with the sonar technology and what DI means. Traditional sonar is referred to as 2D Sonar. Down Imaging is NOT traditional 2D sonar. It is a technology that produces somewhat picture-like images. They are not the same and are not interchangeable when discussing sonar equipment. Humminbird's product name is Down Imaging and the units with that technogy have DI after the model number. Lowrance's product name for the same technology is Down Scan and they use DSI in their model names. Lowrance also has dual technology units like Humminbird's DI units and have HDI after the model number. Other brands have their own different product name for the same technology.
  24. The XIH 9 DI T transducer is the same as the transom model XNT 9 DI T but comes with a package of epoxy instead of a transom mount bracket. It can be installed as a SHOOT-THRU, that is the purpose of the epoxy. There never has been a thru-hull DI transducer. A thru-hull installation takes a 1"+ hole in the hull to insert the transducer stem through and use a nut to hold it in place. That installation has the transducer itself on the exterior. I suspect that you did not use the proper terms when talking to Humminbird Customer Service. You can view all the transducres that Humminbird has on their web site so you don't have to guess what is what, Pay attention to the name and description of them as well as the units they are compatable with. BTW, 570 is not the transducer, that is the unit model number and it has two versions, either the 570 or 570 DI.
