  1. 20# leader is pretty rare for me. I normally run 12# and 15#. Currently using all 2500 model reels
  2. Looking for some guide advice for a build I’m about to get started on. I’m building my ideal popping cork rod for inshore speckled trout fishing. I usually run a 20# or 30# braid main line with a fluorocarbon leader anywhere between 12# and 20#. I use either a uni knot or FG knot to connect the lines together. What guide setup does everyone like for a spinning rod where a leader knot will come into play? Micros are obviously not an option, but I’m wondering what everyone thinks about this scenario before I decide.
  3. Thanks for the advice. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with what I was thinking. My plan was to get a drying motor and make the stands and wrapper myself. Greatly appreciate your help ??
  4. After countless hours of research on the web, I’ve decided to come to my favorite place for advice. I’ve purchased countless name brand rods from sporting good stores and tackle shops, as well as many custom built rods from numerous different builders, but I’ve decided to finally try my hand at something I’ve been wanting to get into for quite a few years and start building my own rods. Like I said I’ve done a great deal of research and I know what I need to get started, but my main concern is... is a kit worth the money? I’ve looked at multiple companies and they all have so many accessories and little add-ons that I feel like I will never use. So if you guys were just starting out, what would you go with as far as the basic necessary tools? Brands and or manufacturers would be appreciated lol. Thanks in advance.
  5. I feel like 12# for everything except when I got to a trick or finesse worm. This is where 8# or even 6# on a spinning rod is the way I’d go. I might go with 10# and give that a shot next time.
  6. I usually throw my T-rig on straight 30# braid, but my areas have been getting quite a bit of pressure so I’ve decided to add a “finesse” T-rig setup to my arsenal. I have a 7’ M-F with a Daiwa Tatula 100 7.3:1. Weightless Senkos (sometimes with 1/8oz or 3/16oz bullet weight), trick and finesse worms with 1/8-1/4oz weight, and a 1/4oz craw or creature style bait. I’ve tried 15# and currently have 12# on, but should I be using something a little lighter?
  7. Looking to expand my rod and reel arsenal and I’m looking for a little advice since I’m looking to try out a different manufacturer. I currently have all Daiwa casting reels. 3 Tatula, 2 Tatula CT, and 1 Fuego CT. Nothing wrong with them at all... just wanting to try something different. My personal preference is magnetic brakes and I’d like to stay in the $100-$150 range. Maybe a little more. What do y’all think? And... GO
  8. Did not mean to open up this can of worms with my question lol. Needless to say, after another few days of fishing while I’m off work, I’ve tried both the octopus circle hooks and the split/drop shot hooks from Gamakatsu with the wacky rig. The split/drop shot is a much better choice for the spawning bass. That’s just my opinion after using both. Lost quite a few fish on the circle hooks. Seemed like it wasn’t penetrating quite like the split/drop shot hook. Again... just my opinion, and thanks to everyone who gave me advice.
  9. Not one of the 3 fish my girlfriend caught were hooked. She pretty much horsed them in and flipped them on the bank and they came off. She caught one about 3.5# and couldn’t flip it. As soon as I grabbed it and slack fell on the line the hook came out. It was resting right inside her lip
  10. Picked up a pack of these yesterday. Worked out very well. Girlfriend actually caught her first bass with it yesterday evening. Then turned around and caught two more lol
  11. Thanks A-Jay. Saw the shiner hooks online just a minute ago. Definitely gonna give those a shot. I’ve been using a 7’ MF casting rod with a 6.3:1 reel with 20# PowerPro... just to add that info to the mix lol
  12. I’ve been trying out the wacky rig fishing for spawning bass, and I like this technique for when the bass are skittish. Very easy to make a quiet entry into the water, and easy to control when trying to place it in a bed. The slow fall really aggravates the males and females. My problem is I’m fishing around tons of grass, and the usual hooks I use for a wacky rig are pretty light wire. Not good for trying to stop a 4 or 5 pounder from darting into a grass mat. Any suggestions for a stouter hook that is good for a wacky rig? Thanks in advance everyone!!!
  13. Went out to New Orleans City Park yesterday and saw a ton of fish on beds. Still very skittish and hard to get em to bite, but had a blast sight fishing. Caught the 12 inch male off the bed, flipped back in with my next cast, and this little female came from about 10 feet away and walked all the way to my sinking baby brush hog.
  14. Sorry guys. Perks of SE La!!! Never thought about wacky rigging a lizard. You throw it weightless? I’ve got some Owner wacky head weedless jig heads that I love. 1/8oz and 3/16oz. I don’t think I’ve ever thrown a weightless wacky rig
  15. It may not be in the rest of the country, but the spawn is on in Southeast Louisiana. Figured I’d start a thread in here to see what everyone likes to use to catch bass off of beds. I personally like a T-rigged soft plastic, and my two favorites are the Zoom Baby Brush Hog or the 6” Lizard. I use a pegged tungsten weight, usually 1/4oz if I can get away with it but sometimes 3/8oz in the wind. Junebug is my go-to color year round down here because I am always fishing stained or muddy water. I suppose if I was sight fishing I might changed to a white or chartreuse or anything I could see in the water, but I’m pretty much always blind casting beds... or at least where I think there’s a bed. Go ahead ladies and gentlemen... share your bed fishing secrets!!!
  16. Already posted this on another thread I found, but I want to revive this topic bc it is very informative. Definitely something to think about... Just wanted to tell everyone how glad I am that this topic popped up again. It’s totally changed the way I rig my plastics. My go to soft plastic is a baby brush hog, which on average weighs about 7 grams or 1/4oz. I’m also a big fan of the Havoc Pit Boss, which on average weighs about 10.5 grams or 3/8oz. I know that density, salt content, and many other factors come into play as well, but if I was fishing a Zoom BBH with 1/4oz bullet weight, putting a Pit Boss on the same setup will fish differently. Might not be a huge difference, but think about how much of a difference there is between a 1/2oz jig and a 5/8oz jig. It’s definitely made a difference in my fishing ??

  18. Here’s the biggest LMB of the 10 I caught yesterday (2/14) in my neighborhood pond. I caught 6 and missed about 20 on Monday, but you had to pay very close attention and wait for your line to twitch or move. Never felt a single bite Monday. Not the case yesterday. Felt that good THUMP for every fish
  19. I love the Keitech Swing Impact. I fish mostly in and around submerged and matted grass, and I find that a T-rig with a bullet weight is very effective. Either lightweight finesse style or a heavy punching weight. If I’m punching or using a steady retrieve I’ll peg the weight, but if I’m hopping it through the thinner grass, I like to use an unpainted, unpegged weight. When you bounce it the weight will fall into the grass first and the lure will follow it down a little more slowly, mimicking a minnow or shad or whatever kind of baitfish chasing its prey
  20. Ok folks, I am stumped. Did a little bit of salt water fishing the past few days, and I rigged/paired a few bass rigs with something more suitable for speckled trout and redfish. So here’s the situation... I took my Daiwa Tatula 100 6.3:1 and Tatula XT 100 7.3:1 and spooled them up with 30# Power Pro. I had each one on an unnamed 7’ MF rod. Same brand, same power, same action, same rod. The standard Tatula was casting like a dream, but I really needed a faster reel to keep up with the trout when they bit and ran towards me. However, when I picked up the XT, I just couldn’t get the distance I was getting with the other. I’m very familiar with the braking system and how to set them, and I set each one as close to exactly the same as you can get. Does anyone have any insight as to why I couldn’t cast the XT as well as the other?
  21. Let me start off by saying I absolutely have fallen in love with fishing a jig. If I could only have 2 Lures, they’d be a jig and a lipless crank. Needless to say... the pond/lagoon system I usually fish gets a ton of pressure, so here I am looking for some finesse advice. What jig would you guys recommend for a more finesse approach when it comes to grass? I’ll be fishing submerged coontail and the edges/points of floating hyacinth mats.... AND... GO!!!
  22. I only tie for personal use so pouring my own isn't really worth the time vs what I spend on the pre made heads. I get 90% of my jigheads from Siebert. Love his jigs. I order my skirts from fishingskirts.com, and I recently ordered a few Boss heads to try
  23. I'm the assistant shop manager, which basically means I write down all the answers to the questions I think the big wigs will ask so my boss can answer them on a conference call while I sit there in silence. Perfect time to slap a few jigs together
  24. @Dorado That's one that hasn't crossed my mind. I'll have to give it a shot @Dtrombly the warpig is on my list of soon-to-try lures. Anyone have any opinions on the GYCB trap? I believe it's called the Midasu...? I've also heard good things about the Spro Aruku Shad.
