  1. I threw the DT8 and DT10 on the 7’4 today. Im pretty new to cranking anything deeper than 5ft, but it felt like way too much rod for both of them in my opinion. Again… I’m not a seasoned cranker by any means. I’m also new to glass for craning. I like a graphite cranking rod for squarebills, but I’m planning to try glass for those as well. The SLX was my first glass rod. Got it to try chatterbaits and fell in love with throwing them on glass.
  2. Going out this afternoon to do some pre-fishing for a tournament tomorrow. Haven’t really thrown cranks other than squarebills and shallow divers. Not really a popular technique down here in South Louisiana lol. But we just got hit with our second cold front in the past week and temps are in the low 30s, so I have a ton of rip rap that I plan on hitting. I picked up a couple DT8’s and DT10’s to try on this rod. My shallow cranking rod isn’t gonna cut it lol.
  3. A buddy of mine just got one from TW. He said it handled the Rapala Tiny OG and a Bandit 100 very well.
  4. Depends on what brand/series you’re throwing, but I’d say 1/2oz is perfect for the 7’4”. Never thrown a 3/4oz but I’ve thrown a 5/8oz and it handled it fine. I usually throw 3/8oz jackhammers with a razor shad for a trailer, but I will go to a 1/2oz occasionally. I find it’s actually a little too much for a 3/8oz in some situations, but I fish a lot of heavy grass so I like the extra power. I was thinking about getting the 7’2” just to see if it was a little lighter than the 7’4”. As far as glass rods go… you can’t beat the SLX for the price. If I can find them both in store and put my hands on them it would be great. If not I might just have to get both! ??‍♂️ I just looked back and the 7’ model is a medium power. Now I’m definitely getting both!
  5. I bought the 7-4 MH glass SLX for chatterbaits and I think it’s the best glass rod at that price point. Wondering if anyone has any experience with the 7-2 or 7-0 glass models. I throw 3/8oz and 1/2oz Jackhammers 99% of the time and a 1/2oz is pretty much spot on. How do the 7-2 and 7-0 compare to the 7-4? I’d like something a little on the lighter side that might be better suited for a 3/8oz. I’ve also experimented with the Mini Max. I’ve only tried the 1/2oz model, but a slightly lighter rod would be great for these when you want to scale down your presentation. Thanks in advance for any input!
  6. Based on all the research I’ve done, I think it’s coontail as well. I feel like coontail and milfoil are extremely similar when it comes to grass as “structure” or “cover”. It could also be a mixture of the two in some places. I know both are known to be found in the delta. I’ve just been curious about the exact species. ??‍♂️ That’s what I have always called it as well. But I’ve heard a ton of people say they’re fishing milfoil. Even a few times I’ve heard hydrilla… I didn’t even know there was hydrilla in this area.
  7. I’m hoping someone can help me out in identifying this grass. I live in the New Orleans area and it’s prominent in most areas I fish around the Louisiana Delta. I’ve looked at tons of pics of different species online, but I can’t figure out the exact one. I was thinking it is either coontail or milfoil, but I could definitely be wrong lol. Thank is advance for the help!
  8. I’ll be taking a trip to Ross Barnett the first week of November. This will be my first venture outside of the Louisiana Delta, and my first trip to a “reservoir”. I’m staying at friends condo on the far Southeast corner of the lake. I believe it’s right by the yacht club. I’ll have access to a dock to tie up my 18ft G3 bass boat, but I wanted to get a little info first. Is that area worth exploring? Or is the northern side of the lake and the river a better place to spend time? I’ll have 3-4 days to fish, so I could put in at different launches and fish all over. Hoping someone can give me a little heads up and maybe suggest a starting point to go put in some work!! Much appreciated!
  9. Finally got a chance to take the boat I recently purchased out for a real day of bass fishing since it came back from getting some motor work done. Motor ran great, but I was having some issues with my trolling motor. It’s a 24V MK PowerDrive. I believe it’s a 2016 or 2017 model. Hoping someone might have some experience with the problem I’m having. Any time I had the power setting over 5 (halfway), the motor will not go into constant mode, and if I push the pedal to engage the motor, I can feel the prop try to start spinning but then it never engages. I did not remember to bring the remote control with me. I’ll have to use it next time I go out and see if that makes a difference. Just looking to see if anyone has any ideas as to what the problem is. Thanks in advance everyone!
  10. What reel do you have it paired with? Just wondering how much it weighs.
  11. When I first got the B-Hittay I was unsure if I would like it. It was my first experience with a composite rod. I was so used to straight graphite that it felt really heavy. Once I put a reel on I felt a little better about it. I paired it with a Daiwa Tatula 100 which is 6.9oz. It balanced extremely well with that reel. It throws 3/8oz chatterbaits pretty good, but I felt like it was made for 1/2oz. I don’t throw anything larger than 1/2oz so I can’t say anything about heavier lures. I haven’t caught a fish on it as of yet bc the spawn is in full swing down here in South Louisiana, but as far as castability and feel on the retrieve go, I’m really happy with it.
  12. I recently bought an Ark Randall Tharp B-Hittay composite rod. It’s a great chatterbait rod and I also like throwing lipless cranks on it, but I would like to find a slightly shorter rod for casting around docks and target casting on the bank. I noticed the 7’ Grinder composite model has the same line and weight ratings. Hoping to get some insight if it would be a good shorter target casting alternative...
  13. I’ve noticed a ton of guys recommending longer rods (at least long for me) for certain applications. I’m not a tall guy and I’m not a short guy (5’10” give or take), but I think it’s all personal preference. I usually go with a shorter rod that what “most” would recommend, but that’s just me. I also mostly fish shallow water and make (or at least try to make) precision casts around cover... so that might have a lot to do with my preference for shorter rods.
  14. I’m mainly going to use it for frogs. I like a rod with a little more tip for pretty much all plastics and jigs as well.
  15. Do you have the 735 model? And when you say soft, do you mean the tip?
  16. Thank you @Columbia Craw. I usually don’t go over 3/4oz when flipping, but it’s nice to know it can handle a tad bit more if necessary.
  17. In pervious posts I’ve written asking for rod suggestions Dobyn’s has always been highly recommended by numerous folks. I’ve finally decided to pull the trigger and get one. I need a new frog rod, so I’ve been looking at the 735C. I’m also planning to use it for flipping and pitching, so I’m hoping someone can give me some advice about what kind of weight it can handle. I see it’s rated for 1/4-1.5oz. How light and how heavy do you guys feel is reasonable on this model? I’ve also considered the 734C as a frog rod, but I throw a frog in some pretty heavy cover so I’m thinking it might not be enough.
  18. I bought the boat with an older model 24V Riptide that I believe was a Terrova model or maybe a different name but had the same features. Not sure of the thrust. Guessing 70 or 80lbs. All of the decals were gone by the time I got it and it never ran properly. The guy I bought it from said it has been giving him problems for a few months before he decided to sell it. I think it was actually a 60” shaft. Way longer than necessary for my boat. Spot lock/anchor mode wouldn’t work and even when I had it set on 10 it struggled pushing the boat. I installed new batteries and it didn’t fix the problem... hence the upgrade lol.
  19. Looking to upgrade the trolling motor on my 2000 G3 Pro 185. I’m running a 2000 Yamaha V4 115. Pretty much set on the MK Terrova, but I’m unsure if 55lbs of thrust will be enough. I normally fish alone and I don’t load the boat with a ton of gear. Also unsure if the 45” shaft is the way to go or if I should go up to the 54”. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
  20. Most of the reviews I’ve seen have said it is extremely sensitive for a composite and everyone also raves about the comfort of the handle and real seat.
  21. I have quite a few rods from Daiwa and I’m happy with all of them. Only problem with that particular model is the handle. I’m not a fan of full grips or cork. I haven’t tried any of the Tharp rods yet, but like I said, I’ve heard pretty much all good feedback. I also had issues with micro guides when using a leader, but I’ve pretty much gotten away from using leaders on baitcast setups. Only time I like a leader is when throwing topwaters like spooks or poppers.
  22. For some reason I’ve never been a huge fan of Shimano when it comes to rods. I have quite a few reels and I love them, but the rods that I’ve tried haven’t impressed me. Granted, I haven’t used a higher end Shimano rod like the Expride, but the SLX and the Curado rods that I’ve tried just didn’t seem to compare to other rods that I have that are in the same price range.
  23. Definitely wouldn’t need it to handle that much weight, but I will definitely check them out. I haven’t used Phenix rods as of yet, but I’ve heard good things and I hope to give them a shot at some point. The Denali AttaX series also jumps out at me. I’ve heard great things about their rods, and the AttaX line also has a great price point at $120 or so.
  24. Definitely agree with @MN Fisher here. I always check the BR forums as a starting point. I feel like you get very “honest” when it comes to reviewing products. As usual, @roadwarrior has some great suggestions. I personally don’t use mono and I rarely use copolymers. I will use copoly (specifically Yo-Zuri Hybrid) when throwing topwater. It floats extremely well. I’ve used P-Line Flouroclear and it works well too. I normally go with 20# or 30# PowerPro with a 3-4ft leader in this situation. As far as less expensive flouro options, I have multiple reels currently spooled up with Yo-Zuri Top Knot. Best fluorocarbon for the money in my opinion. Seaguar Red Label is also a good less expensive option, but I feel like I get better castability out of the Top Knot.
