I too am in the camp of lightest weight possible, but have also boubled up lighter weight for the few times, I wanted more. I actually thinks the sound of them hitting together helped.

I really prefer 8.1 as I am naturally slow on the real......especially after a 40 year cast with a jig. The IPT with 120 feet missing is greatly reduced.
If this is a a multi-use setup , I would run braid to leader and vary the leader according to situation. Many will disagree, but that is what I would do

I have a few braid to leader set-up and don't think I had 1 failure there. I change leaders often, but I really don't see it as a weak spot. My question, is why not all braid if abrasion isn't a concern. I think the right rod and reel can compensate for lack of stretch
I would have said 7's as it was my comfort zone, but I tried 8and found I could control the fish better, including keeping them in the water until they got in the boat......but it is really personal preference
