  1. Hey guys!! We got him the 7ft Medium Berkley Lightning rod with a size 2500 Shimano Nexave-- this academy was limited and we didn't feel like driving around, hah. Thanks so much, he is super stoked and he already caught his first bass! (see attached) He's been doing nothing but watching fishing videos lol! We are going out again this weekend. Thanks again!
  2. Hey guys, My bud is JUST starting to fish and has a realllllly strict budget on his rod at $40-- I was thinking maybe the Ugly Stik Gx2, since he can't break it and well it's not the worst rod out there-- He's got a $30 budget on the reel, so I was thinking the Shimano Sienna 2500. Anyway, I'd like to see what other options are out there-- Thanks!
  3. I've never tried the SLX but I've used my 7ft Medium GX2 spinning rod since I've been fishing (5 years now) - I have my Dobyns Fury now and the upgrade is insane but that GX2 has put me on some great fish! I've caught countless catfish on it, many large-mouth bass, sharks, speckled trout, flounder, spanish mackerel-- that rod with a Penn Battle 2 (size 3000) paired with it, landed my 1st huge jack crevale (which was an insane fight for that setup) - It also will withstand a beating in the car etc. For $35 or w/e it costs, it was worth it to me! I can say that once you invest in your first semi-high end rod, you won't go back, haha!
  4. Honestly, just getting started? I always recommend the Ugly Stik GX2 6'6" or 7' Med action. I've used them to catch bass, catfish, bass, carp, gar, shark, speckled trout, rainbows, flounder and I EVEN landed my 1st jack crevale on the 7ft med on a size 3000 reel-- toughest fight ever but man that rod can hold its own. Also, if your friends arent careful, these rods can also take a beating in the car, etc. If you really want to get him something a little higher, just get him the Ugly Stik Elite-- not too expensive and a pretty dang good starting bass rod. I've finally upgraded to the Dobyns Fury line and let me friends that don't fish often use the gx2's.
  5. That code doesn't seem to work I get the message, "Coupon code "WATERFUN30" cannot currently be added to your cart."
  6. Hey guys! So my friend is getting a new 7 ft medium rod (SPINNING) - He's going to go with the NASCI by Shimano and was told buy the Bass Prop shops guy that the size 3000 would be best for TX rigs/soft plastics since it's a 6:0:1 ratio vs the 2500 (which I usually get/recommended to him) which is 5:0:1 ratio-- Is the BPS guy accurate, which would y'all recommend? Thanks~!!!!
  7. Hello! So I ordered a Dobyns Fury from Amazon and the 2nd from top guide was bent straight instead of at an angle, having a small crack where the guide meets the rod-- returned it and got a new one, no issues but after getting out of a kayak (3rd time using it) and being careful with it, I had noticed another guide being bent straight/cracked-- and the one below that slightly cracked (was not before, so something had to have happened) - Are these guides known for being weak? I am having it replaced again and man is this annoying-- I have it in a rod sleeve at all times in car and in my room when not being used. Anyone else have this same issue at all, at least with the spinning? Thanks!
  8. Hey y'all What brand rod sleeve/sock do y'all use? There are many out there and were wondering which are better quality, fit better, etc etc--- Thanks!
  9. Hey everyone! I finally received my Dobyns Fury 663SF (Med/Fast) paired with a Pflueger Supreme XT 30! This is going to be used with 10lb power pro/8lb yozuri hybrid, primarily for finesse tactics such as TX rig (weightless and weighted), ned rig, drop shot, shaky head, wacky rig, etc.-- I had just upgraded from a 7' Ugly Stik Gx2 Medium paired with a Shimano Sienna 2500 and was wondering two things: 1) What I should now use the Gx2 rod for, since I've upgraded my finesse rod? This was my main rod, used it for applications listed above AS WELL as spinners, small cranks (KVD 1.5 and smaller) and even a 3/8 chatterbait. Maybe just use it as a secondary finesse rod with a diff rig tied on? 2) What should be my next rod? I kind of want to jump into the baitcaster game but am not looking forward to bird nests/backlash etc-- I know I should be getting something probably in the Medium Heavy side of things, whether baitcast or spinning right? I know these rods are used for heavier jigs/deeper cranks etc but I am not usually able to get super deep from the bank, most times-- I do want to get into frogging though eventually and well, I guess I'll just wait for your opinions, lol. Things to know: I fish from the bank like 99% of the time. I am usually fishing creeks, ponds, small lakes and even bigger lakes sometimes. Thanks!!!!!
  10. Hey guys, Finally got my Dobyns 6'6" M/F in and have decided on the pfluger supreme XT-- which reel size should I go with for this rod? I've never used a pfluger reel before and was wondering which may be a better balance. Thanks!!!
  11. Thanks for the input! What reel do you pair with yours?
  12. Hey guys! I recently created a thread to help me decide what rod and reel to use for my first semi higher-end combo. After reading through everyone's responses and doing some more research, I've decided to go with the Dobyns Fury spinning line (have not truly decided on 6'6" or 7'0" yet)-- but I still have a couple of questions! Please keep in mind that I fish from the bank, usually creeks or parks at a lake and even ponds-- and I primarily fish TX rig (weighted and weightless), wacky rig, shaky rig, ned rig, spinner baits and finesse jigs-- 1) I hear that Dobyns run lighter than the listed power-- do I need to go MH to get a M feel? I currently use an Ugly Stik Gx2 Med currently for reference. 2) I was thinking of a Pfluger President/Supreme as a reel to pair with it for now.. I was thinking about going 10lb brain to 6lb fluro leader for this setup and wanted to know what reel size that you guys recommend for this rod? Please let me know if you have any tips for which to go with and if you think a different fishing line setup would be better for this application than braid/fluro leader, please chime in-- Thanks so much! -Chris
  13. Hey y'all! After research, I'm pretty sure that I am going with the Dobyns Fury. However, I am still torn between the 6'6 M/F (FR 663SF ) and the 7'0" M/F (FR 703SF). I do bank fish 95% of the time and perhaps the 6' 6" is better for me but for some reason I feel that the 7'0" gives that extra sensitivity at the tip vs the shorter, allowing me to feel/see any bites when slowly reeling in, per say, a weightless brush hog (I usually fish weightless soft plastics more than anything and the occasional 1/8 bullet added if windy). I am mainly worried about those that say that the power in the Fury line is lighter than advertised. Should I be going the next step up from medium to obtain medium action? or would going Medium still be OK? Feel free to further chime in, please. As always, thanks!! -Chris
  14. I'm thinking of holding offf on the $200 Zodias/$200 Stradic ci4+. Here are the choices I'm thinking from so far: 1) St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'1" M/F "Plastics" 2) Dobyns Fury 6'6" M/F 3) Daiwa Tatula 6'8" M/F Not in any order but I figure I am going to start rod first, then reel in about another 2 weeks. Which reel would you pair with each of these if these 3 rods were given to you? I've just now started hearing about the Tatula spinning reel and don't know much about it, to be honest-- I am thinking maybe trying that Tatula spin reel with the Tatula rod, or maybe a BG with it? I have the penn battle II and it's kinda heavy and fear this may be the same with the BG but I guess I need to test that at BPS. Have not given thought on which for the Mojo or dobyns. Anyways, you all have been such a great help and I appreciate it. I am one of those VERY indecisive guys that thinks something over 2342342342525235632 times before making a purchase. Thanks!!!
  15. I actually use 10lb power pro to 6 lb fluro for my finesse and my other 6'6" uses straight 6 lb fluro
  16. Really great info-- The Dobyns is a new option I haven't given much thought and i've used a 7 ft gx2 for specs/bass/cats/shark/flounder and so it is really hard to part with the length but it seems a lot of bank guys here are recommending 6'6" or 6'8" so I may swap it up-- and I have been snagging on trees lately at the creeks so maybe it will be nice.
  17. I was definitely looking at getting the Shimano Zodias and slapping it with a Stradic Ci4+-- Now this thread has me thinking of other options-- I've never tried Daiwa gear but it looks like I am leaning towards Zodias/Stradic or the St. Croix Mojo Bass (7'1" M/F PLASTICS or 6'8" M/ZF WACKY STYLE)-- not sure if those would be good in general since I mostly fish soft plastics and small cranks-- which per a previous recommendation , I can leave the small cranks to my 6'6 M Gx2/Sienna I'll def go into a BPS and see what feels good-- for some reason I really wanna try a ST CROIX and I hear so much about the mojo bass that it's hard to not wanna try it, haha. Though the Tatula really does look nice.
  18. Yeah I was kinda thinking of a mojo bass spinning but I don't see the technique specifics for each rod when I go to their site-- I also have an 6'6 Med/Fast Ugly Stik GX2 that I use as a second rod. May raise my rod budget to $200, that shimano zodas looks sexy with a stradic ci4, lol! Other reels that had my attention were the Fuego LT and the Daiwa BG.
  19. Hey guys! I've been fishing for bass for about 4-5 months now (4 years of catfishing) and am wanting to upgrade from my 7ft Med/Fast Ugly Stik Gx2/2500 Shimano Sienna combo. I was wondering what you guys think the next step up should be? Things to note: -I primarily bank fish, might plan to buy a kayak soon-- usually fishing ponds, creeks, rivers or lakes-- I make it out to saltwater 2-4 times a year but have a Penn Battle II that I use for that type of fishing -I am usually fishing weighted or weightless TX rig (senkos, baby brush hogs), ned rigs, finesse jigs but also plan to throw small cranks like KVD 1.0 to 1.5 or 1/2oz Rat-L-Traps -I am trying to stick around $150-$200 for rod and maybe $100-$200 for reel? (may go more on reel?) I just want to see what suggestions you guys have. I tried to give as much info as I could about what kinda fishing that I do. I am loving the heck out of bass fishing compared to the usual cat fishing that I started out with-- Thanks so much!! -Chris
  20. So with Rainbow trout season in just a few months, I am gonna get ready to hit the Guadalupe river. I have an idea of what rod and reel I want (not wanting to break $130) - going for an Okuma SST Trout rod, 5'6 Ultra Lite with a Pfluger President spinning reel -- should I go for the smallest pfluger president reel or the next one up? I'll be using around 4-6lb test for main line with 4lb fluro-- also will throw some 1/16th and 1/4 spinners on this. Thanks dudes! (side note, my brand new veritas 2.0 7ft med broke the other day, upon first cast )
  21. Hey guys!! I'm Chris, and I've been fishing for 2 years! I finally joined friends after putting it off a billion times and became an addict immediately! I primarily catfish (as we love cats down in the south) and have JUST begun to get into Bass fishing! I cannot wait to learn more info from this community and well, tight lines!!! -Chris
