  1. Hey all, for fathers day I gave my dad a certificate to get a rod and reel so that we can fish together. The limitations are spinning only and an absolute max budget of $150. We would mostly be targeting LMB's, medium sized stripers, flounder, and possibly sea trout. What suggestions do y'all have?
  2. Thank you all for your input, I will take it into consideration. Tbh I never saw the Diawa rod on TW until now, and since I have heard such great words about it, I will try to find it in the store and hold it in my hands. Thanks again all!
  3. Oh yeah, I forgot about the Lews tp1.
  4. I am looking to buy a rod for frogging and flipping/ punching, and I am wondering which one will be the best of the four that I am looking at. Dobyns Fury Casting Rod 7'3" Mag Heavy Powell Inferno Casting Rod 7'2" Mag Heavy Frog Shimano Exage Casting Rod 7'2" Heavy St. Croix Bass X Casting Rod 7'4" Heavy They are all short because I simply don't want a long rod. Any suggestions???
  5. Thank you for all the input. I ended up buying a No. eight blackout 7'3" Med, Mod Fast, and I'm liking it so far.
  6. What about Med, mod fast, like a crank bait rod for at least cranks, jerks, and spinnerbaits?
  7. I just purchased a Lews baitcaster in 6.4:1 and am wanting to throw stuff like crank baits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, chatter baits, buzz baits and the like. I am thinking along the lines of a Medium Fast. Any suggestions? Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving.
  8. The app "Sportstracker" has a paddling feature. It tells distance traveled, average speed, time, max speed, etc. I just want to know how far distances are on a new lake though.
  9. 90% of the time I fish from a kayak so I have to walk the dog with the rod parallel to the water. Rod length is not a problem, at least for me.
  10. I don't currently use this rod for topwater, its my spinnerbait/ soft plastic swimbait/ crankin' rod. I don't have the funds to buy one rod for every application and am trying to narrow my future arsenal down to 4 bait casters and one spinning rod for all techniques that I use most. I have this MH Mod rod and always heard that for topwater you are supposed to use a lighter rod so i thought that this possibly could be my topwater rod. I would be mostly throwing spooks (both jr and regular) and whopper ploppers.
  11. Thanks for the input Turkey Sandwich (gotta love me some turkey sandwiches ) The rod is Team KVD Quantum signature series casting (TKVD746MW). It says EGC on the side so I assume that means it is a glass composite because of the GC part. I am holding the rod normally for a bait casting rod, with the reel in my palm. I mainly throw KVD 1.0's and 1.5's and occasionally 2.5's. Ive never tuned them but they run straight. I can't seem to find it when I looked it up, (I made the purchase over the summer!) but the only reason I purchased it was because it was in the bargain cave at Cabela's (reg. $99 on sale for $39.99) I couldn't pass up a deal like that and thought that MH mod would be fine for lighter stuff and crankin' cause thats all they had left.
  12. I have a 7'4" MH moderate action rod and personally don't like the fact that I can't feel the crank bait vibration while reeling in. Is this normal and are you supposed to feel the wobble? Should I get a M fast for crankin'? Thanks
  13. I have a 7'4" MH, Moderate rod and am wondering if that is too flimsy for bing used as a topwater (walking baits) rod. Thanks
  14. I am a kayak fisher and I don't like to paddle extremely long distances to get to a spot on the lake and if so I want to know how long it will take me. Needless to say is there some way for me to place a pin and drag a route to calculate distance? Or even if there is just on that will show how long something from pin to pin. Thanks
  15. Thank you for all the feedback!
  16. What line do you use for Texas rigs and jigs? Can you use the same line for both? Just one sentence of explanation on why you use it would be great. Thanks
  17. Everybody says to replace hooks on spooks, and i agree 100% because they are garbage. But which brand and what size treble hooks do y'all use. Thanks ps. Does anybody know why a revered company like Heddon still uses crappy hooks???
  18. Sorry I should have specified I was talking about walking baits like spooks and what not. Thanks for the input.
  19. I'm curious about topwater rods, like what length, action, and taper do most people use? Thanks
  20. Oh the fish are in there alright. Ive caught my four biggest bass from there, 24in, 23in, 22, and a 25in in that order. I know that most likely I can't influence them to change anything but I'm just curious about it . My punching gear should come tomorrow and i'll be out there soon.
  21. I am about to make a tackle warehouse order and have some punching gear in the cart! But it seems like the weeds go from the bottom of the pond to the top. Is there a gap in between or is it just thick?
  22. No problem Tom, I would like to know too!
  23. I fish a state park lake which is about 30 acres, but in the summer time the pond is just weed bed instead of a pond. I know I can do nothing about except maybe talk to the park rangers but I'm just curious on how to fix this problem. I've read an article by the SCDNR and they had mentioned either introducing grass carp or tilapia on weed control, and other things like draining the lake in the winter time to half level to let all the weeds freeze. Do these techniques work? If not what does? Thanks. I really like this pond because there are some quality fish in there, but it gets very frustrating when all you can throw in the summer time is a frog or weedless worm without pulling in a handful of crap...
  24. Thanks for all the input! I'm not worried about this being a trophy bass pond just a place to have fun and catch fish, which I do but big bass are even more fun! I will try some big baits next time I go. I will also try for some big gills next time I go. I have a gut feeling that the big'ins (if there are any) could be deep because this is an abnormally deep pond and I focus solely on the laydowns. Thanks again all
  25. Well I hardly see any bluegill to begin with! And the ones that I do see are small. Thanks for the input.
