Did you get a length ? I almost always have a tape with me.
Do you notice small fish (minnows ) when you walk the shore ?? I'm assuming there are bluegill...
Should of slipped on the pp and got your settlement money. 53,000 . Never work another day in your life
But you're retired. Still. 53000 . Get ya all the Purina you and your buddy biscuit could ever want.
When I pond fish I usually only bring select items. Plastic craws, ribbon tail worm ,Flukes, senkos, shad raps, a popper (and frog) , a jig (with craw trailer), a rapala original floater and terminal tackle. I almost always start out with a weightless and a t rig on the two rods I bring. Depending on results . I rotate the shad rap and popper in. The jig with a rage chunk almost never lets me down.
Good luck. Post about it !
@FisherO'men you are probably (very likely ) correct. I know someone that has a mount. And it is a replica. And that is what he told me it was. It looked killer ! Apparently he doesn't know what it is. And either do i. Lol . I'm going to go with the fiberglass. Because it didn't look like skin . He said it had a lifetime warranty and that it would never deteriorate. (Maybe that's not not accurate as well then ?) But I thought it was cool because he got to release his fish ! And still look at very much the same thing
As soon as I opened up and looked at your picture , I told myself a number before I read posts. 3. And apparently everyone else thinks so too. Nice bass .
Yea good story. However the biggest fish in the pond is almost (if not always) female. Id try a top water around dusk or dawn or anytime it's slightly windy. Looks like a nice pond.
Also, I'm not sure how often you fish the pond. But I would bring some creek chubs or try free lining a small bluegill (3-4") if there is a big gal in there. You'll know rather quickly if she's in the mood . Just a suggestion . I know alot of people frown upon live bait, but it's a good way to find out the true size in the pond if you're not 100% sure.
You said you don't often have much luck with numbers. Which makes me believe one of two things (if not both)
The pond is very pressured. Or there's a beast in there
I have a similar experience when I took mine crappie fishing. I took us to the spot. Baited the poles. Cast them out. But she reeled in the biggest one that day. 2 years later and I still hear about it .
@J Francho looks like you need to take a trip somewhere else lol. All these people you know on here and not one has tried to put you on a DD? I don't think I'll ever break the DD bass here in ohio. The one I caught (in my profile pic) is probably the biggest that I'll find. And with money tight i doubt I'll be able to vacation and get a good shot at one.
I actually get to go to Michigan this weekend to let my mother see her granddaughter for the second time. But the chances in Michigan producing a DD is even more slim.
Ohio's record is 13 some lbs. Not sure about the length. What's NY 's?
Did you keep it ? Lol. You can always have a replica mount made . If you get someone who knows what they are doing, they can really look killer.
Sounds like a nice bass no doubt.. I personally wouldn't get it mounted. And I'm up north. A 6lber is much more rare here in ohio than it is in Louisiana. I'd say keep at it. You'll beat that in your future for sure.
If it truly meant something to you, and you already have it in your freezer.. then the damage is already done and if you have the money then you might as well.
I caught one this year that was 24 inches.. out of my neighbors pond. It had the head of a ten pounder. But my scale read 8.23. only had a 15.5 inch girth. I had it in my hands with my rod and my backpack (with the same intentions you have right now) and it gave me a hard shake.. I decided I didn't need it that bad. And put her back.
IMO the joy comes from the fight. Take a picture and let her go. Take her length and girth , and a picture . That's all you need for a replica ! Keep those genes in your favorite fishing spot !!
Bluegills eat anything.. I've caught them on crawlers , bread, waxworms, live minnows , a jelly bean, bare hook (although I wouldn't suggest that) , they are not picky and IMO fairly stupid.
I picked up a jar of powerbait crappie magnets , never caught a crappie on one. But the bluegill love em. I like the chartreuse. But the gills don't care. I honestly don't think there is an easier fish to catch than a bluegill.
I'm not positive. I'd say at least 8 pounds. I didn't have my scale. I just got off work so I had my tape. In ohio you can get a "fish ohio" angler pin if you catch a certain species of certain length. For LM bass it is 21" and the channel cat is 26" so. It broke that by 2 inches. I was a little puzzled by the color. It looked completely black in the water. And still pretty dark out. I thought they were much lighter. Maybe it's age ?
@soflabasser
Not saying that it didn't catch the bass. But he could have just as easily caught it on something else and stuck that lure in its mouth for sales promotion.
Thanks @GORDO , @soflabasser @Bluebasser86
Thanks for the tips. 28 in channel cat. Free lined a Gill. The cat came out of the weeds as I reeled it in slowly and crushed it. What a rush.
