The spool can move side to side when your tension knob is backed off. As you turn the knob in, the play in the spool will decrease as more pressure is applied. Not sure if this is what you are experiencing.

You can worm fish with a Light Weight Rod all the way up to an Extra Heavy Rod ... just depends on what worm, what weight, what hook, what line, what structure, what cover etc. Not everyone thinks the same when we say "Worm Fishing". No Wrong Way Just Better Ways .....
