  1. For several years, my arthritis forced me to use UL gear. That meant that EVERYTHING I got was gotten on an ultralight; crappie, yellow bass, largemouth, wipers and pike. I just made sure .... and I mean really sure .... that I positioned myself on unobstructed water. That made all the difference. jj
  2. I had the same ting happen in a nearby lake that I fished a lot. It was as if a switch was just turned off. I thought I had found the answer when they started to pick up some ribbontail worms. The reality was that I didn't realize how steep the lake sides were, and my worm was a lot deeper than I thought. The bass had retreated. Literally, they left the area for deeper, cooler water. Is it possible the same thing is happening to you? Is the water you're fishing adjacent to a deeper column? If so, then every extra foot of cast you can make counts. You'll have to "reach out and touch'em." jj
  3. Always remember: The best lure for trapping is the one that the quarry CANNOT resist. jj
  4. Always remember; it's darkest just before the dawn. ? jj
  5. I hope so. I just ordered from them for the first time. ? jj
  6. ^^^^^^^ Uhhhhh ..... you DO know you're talking to an old fart, right? ^^^^^^^ ? jj
  7. Wow. A lot more than I had thought! jj
  8. As I'm fishing lakes more and as this spring has unusually clear water, I'd like to know peoples' ideas as to how far a bass will move, laterally or vertically, to attack a lure. I've seen them move laterally 5 to 6 feet, but that was using a Bomber 13A. I know pike will move triple that, but bass aren't pike. As I use more and more crankbaits, and as more of them are going to be non-rattling, I'd just like to know your opinions. Thnx. jj
  9. Since I'm relatively new to lakes, my question would be approximately the same as yours: "Where do lake bass go in the heat?" I see @MN Fisher thinks the same way I do. It's really an age-old problem. Can't catch'em if you can't find'em. jj
  10. Lots of people can give lots of advice, but that one right there is one of the best that anyone can give! jj
  11. That was VERY informative. Thanks! jj
  12. Be careful. Be very, very careful. Most "combo" deals are a manufacturer's attempt not to give YOU a better deal, but to make THEM more money. A good number of combos pair a so-so rod with an inferior reel, or vice-versa. That's not to say that there aren't good combo deals out there. Yes, there are. But you have to really scan the deals tightly, talk it over with people here who have those deals (like the Aird-X), and make sure that the combo does what you want to do. I used to get good combo deals by cruising the leftovers at the big box stores at the end of the season. That's when they were on sale, and sometimes the department head could even be talked into a lower price. Good luck to you! jj
  13. "Sick" used to mean unwell. "Gay" used to mean happy and carefree. Words change meaning. "Finesse " is one of them that has changed a little, and is probably still in the process of changing even more. So what? The world won't end because of it. jj
  14. Bomber 13a and 15a, for sure. I've got a stash of Rapala crr5 squarebills. When they're gone, I'm gonna cry. ? Super Spot in chrome. Why? That's simple! They're what catch bass where I fish. Move me 150 miles in any direction, and that list will likely change radically. jj
  15. Ordered the SD3H today. I'm a little wimp when it comes to pain, and the comfort factor won out. Lew's has excellent customer service, so I'm pretty confident it'll be OK ? Thnx. jj
  16. Brave person! ? jj
  17. Human beings are different. Some follow the latest fad, and some don't. We could all have more advanced furnaces, cars, computers and televisions. A few people are satisfied at whatever point they occupy now, and feel no need to take advantage of more advanced technology. So there is no "debate" as to what the positives and negatives are. People pretty much know the positives and negatives. What's left is freedom of choice, and people aren't required to justify that. jj
  18. Answer: no. However, fishing is a hobby or pastime, and "need" doesn't have much to do with it. I think the people here are giving you some pretty good advice. And my personal answer would be the 7' St. Croix Avid MH/M cranking rod. The 66 MH/F and the 7' MH/M would make a dynamite pair for covering everything that the spinning doesn't. And vice versa. jj
  19. Well said! What we have here is a college for bass fishing. ?‍? jj
  20. If I were to guess, I'd say it has nothing to do with Yum and everything to do with a Walmart contract. But like I said, that's just a guess. ? jj
  21. Technology exists. It has existed for thousands of years. What you're calling "inevitable" is change, and that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with technology. As for the world belonging to the educated, there are different kinds of "education". What one person learns, another doesn't. And what one person doesn't, another does. Some kinds of education are simply havens of self-congratulation. jj
  22. Here's how I figure it: as long as you're taking care of your family, you're all the "grown up" that you need to be. Family comes first. As for all the rest, it's just icing on the cake. jj
  23. Bomber 15A spinnerbait another spinnerbait Spoons have stopped producing like they fell off a cliff. I don't worry; they'll come back. jj
  24. Don't worry about it. I kinda doubt that you're the first person in the world who ever made a mistake. ??? But now I see where you're headed. Spots dive; LMB jump, and that's why I needed the softer tip. You'd probably love the Avid or Avid-X lines. That's if the hard tip is that important to you. If it's just strength, then I'd keep the Triumph. jj
