  1. I know wipers well. I also hate losing lures. Go with the 12 lb. as a minimum. jj
  2. For someone getting into river fishing, this video is 24K gold. Everything I've learned in 35 years of river fishing is here .... especially fishing the current breaks, also called "curtains" because underneath the surface, the current shear billows out like a curtain in the breeze and changes shape and location. I like the statement about the inevitability of losing lures. As bad as it is for boatmen, think of how it is for us shorecasters! ? Thanks, Glenn! ? jj
  3. Do whatever feels right to you and don't look back. ? jj
  4. I really don't know what the total palette of options were for Falcon. I don't know whether they could have made an acquisition, or cut a deal with some other entity, or what. Probably, all of you don't know those details either. And I admit that in this business atmosphere, it was probably a sink-or-swim situation.
  5. For me, it's the Northland Reed Runner spinnerbait. I needed a cheap spinnerbait to drag over rocks and helicopter across logs. I knew I'd lose a good few of them. This spinnerbait fills the bill. It's decent on hookups, durable enough for more than one big fish (re-bends easily) and flat-out catches fish from spring all the way through 'til late fall. Although the list is $4, I've never paid that much at a retailer. Second is the Cotton Cordell Super Spot lipless lure. It gives me everything that I need in a trap lure, but for less money. jj
  6. That is cold. That is straight-up, shoeshine-and-gigline bolt-on cold. BUT WELCOME ANYWAY! ???? No one here will ever pull your leg ...... especially not me. ?? jj
  7. One of my favorites .... for sentimental reasons. jj https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMoZ08cISac
  8. Not a high horse at all. If a dog bites you on one leg, are you going to give him the other leg, too? I would rather resist something undesirable rather than just totally give in to it. But that's just me. jj
  9. I favor lower gear ratio reels, so I'd rather reel faster. I don't purchase or use the "super high end" type reels. I notice that the moderate priced reels I use kinda lose sensitivity if they're fast gear ratio and I slow them down. Of course, the way I fish favors slower retrieves anyway, so it might be a moot point. jj
  10. I think I see a pattern starting to develop ....... ??? ??? Thank you, @MN Fisher Next week I'm going to learn to walk and chew gum at the same time! ??? jj
  11. One would think that there would be a video on this site about such matters. I searched, but I couldn't come up with anything. Maybe try YouTube. They've got quite a few videos about beginning baitcasting. jj
  12. Some days I look around, and I wonder whether we're really intelligent or not.
  13. As with most things dealing with fine details not published far and wide, the best idea is to call or e-mail the factory. Perhaps they want the details public, perhaps they don't. But at least that way, we've got it from the horse's mouth. jj
  14. ^^^^^ This ^^^^^ Absolutely. jj
  15. Some people (like me) have to find things out the hard way! ???? jj
  16. They upgraded the Mojo series in 2016. jj
  17. Look up info about the Daiwa BG series. That would be like the BG2500, for instance. They're good, solid reels that are smooth and easy to service. They have new reels out that are monocoque. They'll have an "MQ-" in the model number. The BG line has some of them, too, like the BG MQ2500. They are supposedly NOT easy to service. Many companies are going to the "enthusiast" market. I understand that; it's a money decision. Which of their products are also durable and robust is an entirely separate matter. Good luck in your search! jj
  18. Alconite IS aluminum oxide. https://www.thecustomfisherman.com/product-review-crb-epoxy-mixer/ I'd stay away from SIC inserts, at least until they're improved. They are brittle. https://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/threads/fuji-k-series-alconite-vs-sic.772054/ https://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/topic/404081-fuji-guides/ Here's a blurb for SIC guides. Notice that they don't address the issue of brittleness. https://www.guidesnblanks.com/page/fuji_sic_guide And it's not just fishing rod guides ..... https://www.pumpsandsystems.com/trouble-silicon-carbide The care that a manufacturer spends on making a quality product is FAR more important than anything else; if the manufacturer is trying to deliberately foist cheap, poor-quality goods onto the market, then they're no good even if he says they're made out of diamonds. Integrity is the first consideration. And unfortunately, integrity is something advertisers seem to have in very short supply. jj
  19. That joke is older than I am ........ and I babysat Methuselah! jj
  20. M/F for cranks, buzzers and squarebills? And then throw in the DT10? Hmmmmm..... I'll tell you what I would do. I'd get the MH/M rod in the same family. It's 3/8 to 1 oz. You'd have plenty of strength for the DT10, and a moderate action to keep the small cranks and squarebills pinned. You'd have a little delay for the buzzbait, some give for the chatterbait, and it would be good enough for a popping rod. It's a light rod, to boot. I could be wrong, but I think you might lose too many fish with the M/F. Not that I would be talking from experience, mind you ....... ? If you're absolutely dead set on a M/F, then what @Ogandrews said is correct. The M/F in the Mojo family is dang righteous. jj
  21. Patience, my friend ..... patience. It's a virtue. ???? jj
  22. On the H/M I have the Shimano TranX 300a. Gear ratio is only 5.8:1, but IPT is 30", by virtue of the 300's greater spool diameter. Right now, I have a Shimano Citica 200i on the MH/MF. It's 6.4:1, I believe. The best gear ratio for you is entirely your choice. You might love the reel and gear ratio that some guy next to you is fishing, and then again you might hate it. Experience is the best teacher. A good English teacher comes in a close second. ???? jj
  23. The rip-n-chatter is Heavy power. It'll keep anything pinned that you're likely to encounter ..... including musky. That doesn't say ANYTHING about setting the hook, only fighting the fish after the hookset. I learned on fiberglass. Someone who has learned on graphite may not be able mentally to adapt to a 'glass hookset, because the rod is "soft". Yes, you "swing for the bleachers", but then you MAINTAIN solid pressure on them also. I have both the 7'-02" H/M glass and the 7' MH/MF spinnerbait models. Believe me .... the 'glass is much more of a brute than the 3/8-3/4 spinnerbait rod. Don't worry and obsess. Fishing is FUN. It's one of the few activities on Earth in which more learning is MORE fun. I've learned a heck of a lot about both equipment and techniques. In some cases, the answer to my curiosity was, "Nope!", but the greatest preponderance was just .... well, great fishing. ? Good luck! jj
  24. A lot less than one season. jj
