  1. He said Dad jokes, @Glenn, not Granddad jokes. ??? jj
  2. It's enough drag. Believe me ....... it's enough drag. 4 lbs. is 1/2 gallon of water. You put a half-gallon of water on the end of your line, on the rod that you intend to use, and try to lift it. You'll get your eyes opened real quick, if you don't break the rod. Then take an empty jug and lift it off the ground and hold it there. Have someone add water, little by little. Stop when the rod bends 180 degrees over, if not before. (Don't break the rod.) Measure how much that load weighs, and see whether the reel has enough drag to lift that load. I think this little experiment will give you lots of confidence about drags and rod loads. Go fishing! Have fun! ? jj
  3. There are things that may (possibly) merit remarks today that were not even issues when I was younger. It was acceptable for women to do whatever the heck they wanted to do. jj
  4. What did the bartender say to the turkey sandwich when it tried to order a beer? “Sorry, we don’t serve food here.” Why did the golfer bring two pairs of pants? In case he got a hole in one. What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear.
  5. OK. Enough with the nightmares, already! ? jj
  6. Wise move. jj
  7. I see that happening every so often, but it's the $24.99-combo-discounted-to-$19.99 that get broke and then get thrown. jj
  8. I've been retired for 5 years. My son told me, "Dad, you just do anything you want to do." So I did, and I still do. I found out that the day I retired, my former boss told the secretary, "One or two months and he'll be bored out of his mind. He'll beg to come back, you just wait and see." They buried him 3 months ago. So I'll tell you what my son told me: You just do anything you want to do. ? jj
  9. Hmmmmm................. Yeah, I do. 3/16 Midget 1/4 Spinnie 2/5 Dardevle (least liked) 3/4 Dardevlet 1 oz. Dardevle 1 oz. Dardevle Weedless Also: 1/3 Cop-E-Cat 1/2 Cop-E-Cat 4/5 Cop-E-Cat 1/4 Devle Dog Pup (I've had heavier Devle Dogs and I didn't like them.) 5/16 Flutter Chuck (somewhere) 1/2 Flutter Chuck Mag They ALL catch bass. ??? jj P.S. - rain coming in this evening. Caught a small bass this P.M. on hammered brass 1/3 Cop-E-Cat twitched about 3' down in 12' of water.
  10. I don't know what your hands are like, but mine are fat and short-fingered. I have the 70 and 150 size Shimano reels; they are more comfortable for me than the Daiwa reels. Drags are good, gears are smooth and strength is great for the size. I'm a shorecaster, and they have adequate line capacity for my long casts. My lines are .012" for both mono and braid. I wouldn't cast 1+ oz. lures with the 70 size (although others do) but the 150 size seem to handle it very well. jj
  11. Today I got these and these but unfortunately I forgot the superglue. I got those split-tail Mr. Twister trailers on one spoon (3.75") and they looked pretty good. IOW, the action is still good. I had to cut about 1/2" off the body to get it to fit correctly, though. Tomorrow I'll get some glue and try the skirts. I looked around and couldn't find the chunks locally. May need to order them. THANK YOU TO ALL! jj
  12. Hey, @Catt! Two questions: 1) What is the chunk trailer at the top? 2) I always used spinnerbait skirts on my Silver Minnows, too. But they never lasted, and now cheap spinnerbait skirts aren't cheap anymore. Not only that, but when I tried to attach them the way you show in the second picture, they wouldn't stay in place. What are those skirts, or how do you get them to stay in place????? Thnx jj You know I gotta ask ............. how long does that Twister Tail last? jj
  13. I use both the 2.75" and the 3.75" Johnson Silver Minnow spoons. What do you suggest for trailers on these spoons? Thanks. jj
  14. For right now, tell us what worked sometimes in the last 2 years and what didn't work at all in the last 2 years. Give us an idea of: 1) depth of water 2) all general types or designs of lures you possess 3) tell us what you expect when you say, "pattern". If the people here can help me, they sure as heck can help you. ? Talk to us. jj
  15. A better angle for the bill on a different color jj
  16. Rapala CRR-5 in Shad. Over all, it's the best squarebill I've ever seen, and I have a small stash of them. ? jj
  17. Yeah, and some of them deserve about 364 more, too. ??? jj
  18. Is that a pun? ? jj
  19. Color is red/green, plus contrast, or lack thereof. Sound and water displacement complete the triad. People have been catching fish, commercially or recreationally, for centuries. New knowledge that reinforces those experiences can be great. New knowledge that goes against those experiences is suspect until it proves itself ...... if it ever does. I'm so old and set in my ways that I doubt I'll ever change. But ....... I can still catch fish. ?? jj
  20. I use the Long A series, and I notice that there's a lot of inconsistencies. Bomber has also dropped some of the old colors and are now offering new colors, and the new lures don't act exactly like the old ones. I just got some, and it will take awhile for me to see whether they're gold, good or garbage. The lures that were most inconsistent for me were the Norman cranks. When they were on though, they were magic. jj
  21. That's my twin! ........ from the ears up, that is. ??? jj
  22. Y'know ..... this could be good and bad at the same time! ??? jj
  23. Take a look at the Fenwick Eagle 2 rods; they have a light and a medium light, both moderate fast. Not the fanciest, but seem to be built to last. jj
  24. This used to happen to me way too often. I took advice from the forums here, and now have a rod that is longer (8') and slower action (MF). I keep the tip down and most importantly, I keep the line coming in at a 45 to 90 degree angle. Helps a lot. jj
