  1. When the wind blows fish a spinnerbait around wood any time. Wake a short arm Colorado blade spinnerbait on a calm summer evening right before dark. Start by reeling the bait fast enough for the blade to break the surface, then slow the retrieve down until the blade causes a wake, but doesn't actually break the surface. It takes some practice to get the speed just right, but when done right, it can catch giants. If your bait goes by a log, or other visible piece of cover, stop the retrieve for a split second and hang on. Waking a spinnerbait was the most popular way to fish the bait, before buzz baits became popular and is still very effective.
  2. How deep does this crank dive? Does it have a rattle?
  3. I would get 10 - 20 years in jail, because the only way I would be able to afford either of those reels is if I robed a bank.
  4. That style of hook is designed to have the line run through the eye, and the knot tied on to the shaft, usually referred to as a Snell knot. The angle of pull is not correct if you simply tie to the eye. You may loose less fish because of the soft split ring, but you will loose more fish because you are using the wrong hook. I would use a single hook that has the eye of the hook inline with the shaft of of the hook, or snell the hook you have and tie to the lure that way.
  5. I always land the bass on the left side of my kayak, because the fish finder is in the way on the right side. In order to do this, I have to switch the rod to my right hand, but I'm not exactly sure where I hold the rod, but I don't seem to have a problem with the switch. I do loose my share of bass, but usually they get off early in the fight. I take my time, and always use a great deal of finesse when any fish is at boat side. If a bass has made it all the way to my kayak, I assume the hook will hold as long as I don't horse the bass. I have landed many large bass that were skin hooked, because I was gentle with them when they got near the boat or kayak. I am right handed, so I probably should lip them with my right hand, but the way I have my Kayak set up it is better to land them with my left hand. I don't use a net because I am awkward with a net unless I can hold the net with both hands. I'm already at the same level with the bass making grabbing them by hand almost as easy as using a net. Slowly reaching to grab a DD. bass when she is only inches from me is a magical moment.
  6. If you are using bream for bait the best thing to do to increase the number of hook ups is use a circle hook. No hook set at all required. Resist the urge to pull back, let the bass run off with the bait, then slowly reel. The hook will securely hook the bass in the in the corner of the mouth. Not only will your bass landed to bite ratio go way up, but you will not gut hook any bass. Circle hooks and live bait go together like jigs and pig.
  7. I don't think it will repel the bass, but it will melt anything plastic. I have seen way to many tiller handles on outboards, as well as many other plastic products ruined by DEET.
  8. My confidence is in the next new bait I just can't live without. I can't catch them with what I got, but that new bait I saw on You Tube will turn me in to a pro. Now that's confidence.
  9. I ordered a Zillion from Digikita a couple years ago. It got to my address in the states in three days. I did not have to pay any shipping or duty. My only complaint is it was way to easy, and the price to cheap. The Bait Monkey has been on my back whispering Zillion Japan in to my ear, over and over every day for over two years now. Before you buy a reel from Japan, remember the road to bankruptcy starts with one small step.
  10. Even the Bait Monkey wont be able to find a use for those hooks.
  11. The real question isn't weather it will work, anything will work, you can fish a Whopper Plopper with a soda bottle wrapped in line. You have to decide if you want work that hard or would it be better to buy a more suitable rod.
  12. The reel is junk, it wont work any more. Don't buy a new reel. I will come with my own equipment and cull those pesky 7-9 pound bass for you.
  13. I use T Rig the most, but my favorite is the Carolina Rig. The C Rig gets a higher percentage of big ones for me. I will start with a T Rig because of its versatility, but if I catch a couple on it and the conditions are favorable for. a C Rig I will switch. I use the same baits for both rigs.
  14. I would be happy to go fishing in the day time with four rods and only have one rats nest.
  15. Come fishing with me and you wont have to worry about gut hooking fish, and you will get a full day of casting practice.
  16. One of the most impressive skills in bass fishing is being able to remove a backlash like a pro. The only way to get proficient at such a revered skill, is lots of practice. Backing the brake off of a bait caster for no good reason, is a rite of passage for all serious bass anglers. Nothing like the feeling of being on the very edge of a total blowup, just one notch away from complete free spool, and launching a perfect cast 20 feet up the bank, trying to catch that elusive air breathing four legged walking black bass. That one extra long cast is worth picking out a dozen back lashes.
  17. I tried to get my wife interested in bass fishing, but I soon found she is way to smart to spend so much time, energy, and money trying to catch a fish that I plan on letting go.
  18. When spinnerbaits and crankbaits wont work, I have to finesse them with a T rigged Zoom Ole Monster, and if they want an even more subtle presentation, I throw a wacky rigged 7 inch Senko.
  19. Anybody who got a higher grade than me in Biology feel free to correct me. I was always under the assumption, that the main requirement in the classification of a species was the ability to interbreed and produce viable offspring. A miniature poodle could breed with a wolf, and have decedents that could reproduce. Therefore a wolf and a poodle are both the same species with the common name of dogs. Where as a fox and a wolf can't breed and produce viable offspring therefore they are sperate species. A donkey and a horse are not the same species even though they can reproduce because the mules that are born are sterile and cannot reproduce with either of their parents, or other mules. My question is would not the same rules of classification apply to bass? Large mouth and Florida bass not only can cross breed, but in certain areas have done so for hundreds of years. I know that small mouth and largemouth can interbreed, but it is rare, and I'm not sure if they produce viable offspring. With viable offspring as the main requirement to be classified as a species, than I would assume Northern Largemouth and Florida largemouth are sub species of the same species. I got a C in my biology class in college, and it has been many year ago that I took the class, so anyone with more knowledge on the subject feel free to correct any of my assumptions.
  20. Start wit the simple things. Make sure your fuel tank is vented, try a new fuel line, and fuel filter. It might also be the connection on either the end going in to the motor or the one going into the fuel tank. Sometimes the seal goes bad on the connections, and will start to suck air. The motor will run fine at first then start to cut out. I would barrow a separate fuel tank, and hose from someone to check before buying new parts. It wouldn't hurt to check and make sure your kill switch clip is on tight. I would expect your problem is fuel related, but as others have said it could be plugs, or even an over heating issue.
  21. If I know a fish is on a particular log, I usually give up after my third lure gets snagged and lost on the log. I usually don't waste much time on one spot, when I know I can spook bass off of multiple pieces of cover. I prefer to make random casts at places I hope bass are, and depend on luck.
  22. I know people wont believe me, but at a couple lakes I fish in Mexico, the largemouth bass fight as hard as any small mouth bass I ever caught. I don't know if they are Florida strain, or a mix between Florida, and northern strain, but they are the hardest fighting bass I have ever caught. Anything over 5 pound's will jump completely out of the water a minimum of 3 times, and will not only bulldog like a freight train, but at times will go on blistering runs. The bass in other lakes I fish close by, fight more like largemouth I have caught in northern waters. It doesn't sound logical, but that is my story and I'm sticking to it.
  23. It's what happens when I get to my favorite fishing hole at first daylight and there is already someone else in my spot.
  24. In my life, I have had the unfortunate experience of witnessing the decline of many fisheries. All went down hill to a variety of reasons, and a couple I have to admit, I contributed to the decline. I was fortunate enough to have fished some of the places at the very peak of the fishery,( "the good old days"). It hasn't all been doom and gloom. I have been lucky enough to see fishing steadily improve for over 30 years on a couple of my favorite fishing holes. I also am lucky enough to have discovered places where the fishing is at it's peak right now. One place is starting to slide, but I'm hoping to find a new lake to replace it. No matter how bad the fishing gets, nothing can remove the memories I have of the glory days and I do my best to enjoy today, because I know today may be the glory day I look back on many years from now. The slow death of a great fishing hole, is a very painful experience. I hope that you can still enjoy many more days fishing, while at the same time cherish the memories of your two favorites from the past.
