  1. For the St. Croix, what model did you buy? (Avid X, Bass X)
  2. Thank you all for the feedback, I would agree that for "fun fishing", Shakespeare maybe the way to go. I guess I'm to that point where I want to "step my game up". I have been looking at a few other rods such as Daiwa, which is the same company as my baitcaster and No. 8 which is on sale right now on tacklewarehouse. I've seen many people mention Abu Garcia Veritas rods, is it weird to put a Daiwa baitcaster on a Abu Garcia Rod?
  3. I have a couple Shakespeare rods but don't see a ton about them on forums? Are they not a good rod or something (78% 5 star rating on amazon)? I just purchased a baitcaster on tacklewarehouse and looking for a casting rod in their selection, Shakespeare wasn't available. I'm not necessarily a dedicated fanboy, just looking to find a good casting rod for topwater within $100.00. FYI new to the baitercaster game.
  4. Can I put 15lb braid on a rod with line rated 6-14lb? It may sound like a stupid question but I'm not sure what the manufacturer means by line rating.
  5. Okay one last question, Power Pro Spectra or Slick? I have some cover to throw into but mostly the open (like ponds and rivers).
  6. Ok that makes sense, I thought the manufactures line capacity was a performance related issue. Any recommendation on braid to leader sizing? I.E. if I use 10lb. braid what should be my leader? Or should it be that the leader's diameter should not exceed the diameter of the braid diameter?
  7. So I've been trying to wrap my head around braided line with a leader using a Pflueger spinnger reel. If the line capacity is 8lb/285yd. - 10lb/230yd. (mono. line) do I have to use at least 30lb. braid or can I use something a little lighter like 20lb. braid? I've heard of the 20/10lb (braid/leader) but I'm not sure. I have a spare spool that I would like to try braid on I just don't know the rule of thumb when it comes to this. I was also thinking of using a bright color such as yellow to see strikes. Any thoughts would be most helpful.
  8. Awesome well thank you for the input, I believe I think I got a good idea now on top water fishing, now just got to see how it goes.
  9. Make sense now, probably should have mention the lures I was planning on using in my first post. So with that being said if I'm planning to use regular top water lures, Mono line with a med/heavy power, fast acting rod would be a good start? Since the mono has some stretch, medium power rod would make it more effort to set the hook.
  10. Honestly I'm not even sure on why to use braid? I have had family members that recommend braid with a leader for top water. Problem is I haven't fished in like 7+ years so it hard to try an figure what works from my stand point. I was always taught that mono is pretty visible so lighter line is best. Not sure if that is all true though but don't want to find out with a $3 lure being snapped off by a 2 lb bass. Maybe I need to be enlighten in all sincerity with mono-filament line.
  11. This may be a stupid question but does color of the braided line or mono matter? I new to this kind of line (braided).
  12. Medium/Heavy Power - Fast Action
  13. Hey everyone thanks for the feedback. With Floroclear sinking, that's what I thought but when I went to investigate before posting on here, some folks said it floats. Regards, it sounds like braid with or without a mono leader seems to be the way to go for top water fishing. I do have a spare spool coming in from Pflueger and think at least outfitting it with braided line. Second Opinion Question: I also saw on the web mentioned that a med/heavy type rod would be best for top water. I do have a 6'6" bass pro graphite rod but wonder if this would be overkill?
  14. Awesome bait caster its. Thanks
  15. Is there a way to tell on a Pflueger President 6940? I looked at the specs and the reel size says 40? Not sure on how to determine that?
  16. Recommend Yo-Zuri Hybrid 12lb on spinning reel?
  17. So I'm trying to determine what I need for topwater / upper water column fishing. Here is what I have so far and looking for some tweaks here. Shakespeare Elite Spinning Rod 6'6" Med / Fast Acting Pflueger President 6940 PLine Floroclear 8lb Line A question I'm trying to find an answer on is, does Floroclear actually float? If someone suggest braid with a mono leader, could you give me some recommendations on brands. Thanks.
