  1. Take a look at a Mepps 'timber doodle' on the Mepps' site. A timber doodle attached to their silver weedless spoon will do the trick on small mouth sometimes. A Johnson weedless spoon with the same hookup or with the mister twister will get some interest also.
  2. Fisher, The authorities knew that this guy was a nut case and PC kept them from dealing effectively. FROM: < http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070418/ap_on_re_us/virginia_tech_shooting> "On Dec. 13, 2005, a magistrate ordered Cho to undergo an evaluation at Carilion St. Albans, a private psychiatric hospital. The magistrate signed the order after an initial evaluation found probable cause that Cho was a danger to himself or others as a result of mental illness. The next day, according to court records, doctors at Carilion conducted further examination and a special justice, Paul M. Barnett, approved outpatient treatment. It is unclear how long Cho stayed at Carilion, though court papers indicate he was free to leave as of Dec. 14. Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said Cho had been continually enrolled at Tech and never took a leave of absence. A spokesman for Carilion St. Albans would not comment. Though the stalking incidents did not result in criminal charges, police referred Cho to the university's disciplinary system, Flinchum said. But Ed Spencer, assistant vice president of student affairs, would not comment on any disciplinary proceedings, saying federal law protects students' medical privacy even after death." These Professionals may have been in a position to have prevented this atrocity. PC may have prevented them from committing this guy. The signs were there. Fisher, I know that anyone in today's public school system has a tough time dealing with all the PC gobbly **** that has come down the pike in the last 30 years. 'ED' kids got their rear ends busted at school and twice as hard when they got home once upon a time in America. The threat and parental support was real enough that I can remember the public use of the "board of education" only a few times on young ruffians when I went through the system. To replace this cruelty the psychiatrists and drug companies have given us Ritalin, Prozac, Luvox and other chemicals to dumb down bored over active kids and troublemakers. An attempt was made in my county to allow the school nurses to administer these drugs without the parents consent. The citizens spoke out and the drug effort was defeated this time around, thank GOD. Ritalin use forever limits what a youngster can grow up to be and that is a shame. Eric Harris made great progress on Luvox if you follow his history and reports of his handlers. He was a psychopath and neither the "board" would have, nor drugs could straighten him out. He was a natural born killer. These people have to be locked up forever or eliminated in one of their acts of violence. We need to quit drugging our kids. Let's try parenting and the school working with parents. Cho Seung-Hui was going to kill, he had tried fire already. Did drugs contribute, we will likely never know. He may have been a natural psychopath. We have stringent gun laws; Cho got around them, more gun laws would not have kept him from pouring gas in the halls, rigging propane bottles, and locking the doors on the students. Cho could have poisoned their food, derailed a train, or anything else a diabolical mind can come up with. If I encounter one I want to have the means to protect my family. Please do not limit me. This is not to say that every student at any university should be armed. Everyone should be prepared to protect themselves and others in some manner, run, sound the alarm, barricade the door, as a last resort use make shift weapons and stand and fight. Being armed is an awesome responsibility; today's students by and large are not mature enough to be trusted with a firearm in a campus setting. One has to be very careful with a newbie on the range. An armed student would stand a good chance of being shot by the cops or charged themselves. Even a seasoned professional has adrenalin problems in a shoot out, but the "training" will hopefully take over and he will do the right thing. The student body needs and has a right to be involved in its own protection. Organizing 'Crime Stoppers' on a campus has proven to be an effective method of increasing the eyes and ears of a police force and a way to keep them in touch with the student body. Intercoms and loud speakers would seem to me to be useful to advise students of potential problems. This is old technology but I believe that it would work.
  3. The warning signs for this guy were in what he wrote to the extent that he had been sent to counseling. Did the Counselor put him on drugs or was he on drugs? This guy seemed from all accounts to be much like Eric Harris of Columbine infamy. It makes me wonder if the guy had been taking any antidepressant related drug like Eric Harris. Harris wanted to join the United States Marine Corps, but his application was rejected shortly before the shootings because he was taking the drug Luvox® (Fluvoxamine maleate, an SSRI antidepressant) that he was required to take as part of anger management therapy. It was in his system when he died. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Harris_and_Dylan_Klebold> Five of the parents sued the maker of Luvox. Solvay Pharmaceuticals Inc. makes the drug to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. <http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2001/10/22/national/main315368.shtml> This is a good article on Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. "At last we know why the Columbine killers did it." <http://www.slate.com/id/2099203> <http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/18/virginiatechshooting/main2697827.shtml> (CBS/AP) The gunman suspected of carrying out the Virginia Tech massacre that left 33 people dead was as an English major whose creative writing was so disturbing that he was referred to the school's counseling service. Was Cho Seung-Hui on drugs or had he been on drugs? Was a drug supplied by Va. Tech. I haven't heard the news media asking this question. If he was, maybe we should look to more stringent control of drugs. A psychopath will kill with whatever is at hand, fertilizer, propane, dynamite, vehicle, gasoline, or fire. The list is endless.
  4. I was just fixing to make some smart aleck comment about GW last night and about half way through my musing the power went out. One of my out buildings blew off of its foundations into smithereens; lucky my little boat wasn't next to it. ;D That was a puff of wind that has been going for about 48 hrs now. Went out for breakfast since we have no power, saw one of those places that sells car ports had had their inventory blown all over the place with a car lot next door, you can imagine the damage. "Beware the ides of March" especially when they wait until April. ;D
  5. Welcome to NC. You will probably like Wilson better than Raleigh. A lot of people live close to Raleigh and commute rather than live there. My son lives in Cary which is one of several little towns surrounding Raleigh. Traffic can be a hassle so you need to do some research before the time comes to move. If you are on the Cary side of Raleigh, you are within 30 minutes of Jordan Lake. Like the boys said you have good highways which can carry you to a variety of good fishing in a couple of hours. Fun is where you find it! Enjoy NC ! ;D
  6. You gotta be kidding, rubber shoooos are comfortable in warm weather? Frogtog wouldn't know the difference but for regular people? Come on now.
  7. Justfishing, I don't think that you have to worry, Pa. south and West was populated with Scots, Irish, Germans, and English. We have been in the pot since the 1700's so we are pretty much a mixture. They still have a gathering of the clans at Grandfather Mountain every year if you are interested. My Scots are Wilsons. Tracing your ancesters is interesting. I would recommend anyone who is interested to talk to the old timers in your family before they are gone, they will give you some good clues.
  8. I tried some plastics and a couple of panther martins just for the heck of it in a good native trout tail water river the last couple of days with only one hit on a nice fake minnow. My buddy told me I would get a zero. I used Berkley **** on the bait also. This was an experiment and I learned what doesn't work. Normally I would use wet flys (nymphs) but I saw a couple of fishermen using flys with not too much luck so the fish weren't feeding a whole lot. They were hitting about a size 42 nat that was hatching. I was hoping to come up with something that I could cover more water with and fish a greater distance than the fly rod. I tried a little 'garden hackle' (night crawler) and caught one which was small and I cut the line since I used a hook that will go away. Another beautiful priceless time on the river and learned a lesson or two, what can you say....no complaints here. Next time I'll use flys, these natives are picky and get to see good presentations. Flys will generally out catch spinners and bait where I fish.
  9. I drove three S-10 Blazers and they all had that problem, never could get it fixed for any length of time. It affected the automatic transmission for some reason, shifting would snap your neck, but you get used to it. Never could tell that it affected anything else. It is just another built in glitch that makes you want something besides Detroit Iron. Let me tell you about Explorer glitches..... ;D
  10. I don't know exactly why but they seemed to eye you initially as an easy mark. Some dealerships, shops, etc. make money by not fulfilling the warranty or dragging repair out past the mileage, or deadline. We have all had it happen to us at one time or other. There is nothing quite as satisfying as to find a reliable mechanic, a reliable dealership, a good service center, whatever. With a new automobile it sometimes pays to find out the name and number of the Regional Rep of the Company, believe me it makes a difference if you are having a problem with a dealership. It's probably the same with the ATV's. Honda anything is usually a good product and they (unlike some brands) want to keep a good name. Glad that you got it straightened out.
  11. These boys must like you with all of the good advice that you are getting. ;D Like my grandpa used to say when I mashed my finger, "boy looks like that woulda hurt" and then smile real big. Aloe Vera if you have it, a chewing tobacco poltice should help, I need to try that mustard ID. They used to recommend urine on battlefield burns, might try that...
  12. There are not too many of those 1930's models around anymore... I went fishing with a guy and his son a few years ago. This was stream fishing for trout. The man's wife made fried chicken for us and brought it to us on the creek bank in a peck bucket with ice tea and the fixings. That woman's table was always bending in the middle with food piled on it. Went back several times, those people sure knew how to live!
  13. Great story. Those boys learned that "winning" can take other forms than just points on the scorecard. I helped start a baseball league when my kids were small, the deal was that everyone who came out would get to play. This went on for several years and we added teams to the league to provide for the new players. None were handicapped but many wouldn't have gotten to play in a league where only the best are drafted. We had several leagues around that drafted only the best. One of the kids on our team was very uncoordinated, couldn't bat well at all much less catch and throw. In a crucial game the ball always goes to the weakest player. In a case similar to Shay, we were ahead in the last inning, last out, bases loaded and the other teams best player came to bat with the bases loaded. He hit a high fly to left field where our weakest player, "Wilson", was stationed. The runners on the bases started to move and the ball started coming down to Wilson. Wilson stuck his glove up in the air and never moved a step. Our team and fans were watching and holding their breath. We saw the championship game slipping away. The opposing team and fans were screeming and hollering. The ball settled in Wilson's glove and he held on. Our little team mobbed Wilson. This was "little league" and I never saw Wilson after that season. I don't know if he moved or what. I do know that he will always remember that one play and I hope the boys remember. Wilson probably became an "investment banker" or some such but he got to play little league.
  14. I had a kayaker go by me Saturday splashing water doing some aerobic thing and it aggravated me, don't know what I might reach for if one of those noisy 'look at me' guys came by, , just kidding... ;D
  15. I know your dilemma.. It is hard to find a boat that will fit all situations. I have a jon boat but I don't like to pull it long distances so I got a Sea Eagle Nine which will fit in the trunk of my old 93 Mazda 626. It will support 1250 # and take a small gas and electric motor. They have an inflatable Yak that will fold smaller. Go to their website for info. Other options are one or two man pontoons. Cabela's has a page that describes all of the makes, weights, and prices. They look pretty nice, cheap to more expensive like everything else. They even have a 'backpacker' model. I like the way that you sit and fish from them, up high, just like a lawn chair. Do a search on this site since this has been discussed before.
