  1. I'm considering the 663 for now and a Savvy Micro 704 for Jigs, Texas rigs, Buzzbaits, Chatterbaits, etc. Those baits (along with the spooks, poppers, squarebills, spinnerbaits, flukes and senkos) will complete most of the fishing that I do. What are your thoughts on that 2 rod setup from Dobyns?
  2. Funny enough, they list poppers as one of the secondary techniques on Dobyns' website. I was hoping somebody with the rod would give me their thoughts. How do you think it will do with squarebills if I need to use it for that? I think I'll pull the trigger and see how it handles. Thanks for the input! I said that I'm fishing. I never mentioned that I'm catching fish I'll consider that, but in some of the areas that I fish, a 7' rod can be a real PITA Thanks for the input!
  3. I'm wanting a rod that will handle most of my lighter baits. I just purchased a Duckett Ghost 6'10" medium action a week ago and it snapped on a 1 pounder yesterday. I returned it and I'm going to move to a higher end Dobyns rod. I'm looking at a Dobyns Savvy Micro Guide 663c to replace it. I realize this rod is shorter by 4 inches, but I do most of my fishing from a bank or in a kayak. I'll mainly use it to throw spooks, poppers, light jigs, light Texas rigs, squarebills, flukes and senkos. All of these techniques are listed on Dobyns' website for this particular rod except for squarebills. It's possible that I'll get myself into a crankbait rod in the future, but seeing as squarebills are the main kind of crankbaits I throw, it would be nice if this rod would cover that as well. Will the action and power be similar to the medium/fast Ghost? Will this rod handle squarebills well? Give me your thoughts!
  4. The particular one I was looking at was a MHMF. I thought I edited it to say this but I guess I never submitted it. Thanks for the input! What would you recommend for a rod for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, crankbaits, etc.? My apologies. I thought I included that. St. Croix's website lists the MHMF for spinnerbaits. It's great if you want technique specific rods, but not great for somebody who's looking for a rod to do several things. What would you recommend?
  5. I do own a cheapo Abu spinning combo, but maybe I should look to upgrade to a new rod and use it as my third rod. If I dropped the Mojo Bass could I use spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and buzzbaits on the other two rods? What about squarebills/light cranking?
  6. I do most of my fishing from the bank or in a kayak. Every once in a while, I'll be fishing from a boat. I want 3 rods that can cover top water, mid-depth, and the bottom. Based on what kind of fishing I do, here are my ideas for a 3 rod set up. St. Croix Mojo Bass w/ 6:1 or 7:1 casting reel Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, buzzbaits and the occasional shallow crankbait Dobyns Fury 704c w/ 7:1 casting reel 3/8 oz and bigger Texas rigs and jigs (Secondary use: buzzbaits and chatterbaits) 6'10" Duckett Ghost medium action (I believe this is a Medium Fast?) w/ 7:1 casting reel or Dobyns Fury 663c Poppers and spooks (Secondary use: Small Texas rigs and jigs, flukes, senkos) I'm open to any suggestions/comments. Please give me your thoughts!
  7. Does anybody here have experience with the 2016 model St. Croix Mojo Bass? I used to see mixed reviews on them, but from what I hear, the new model uses the same blank as the St. Croix Avid. Give me you thoughts!
  8. Can you guys give me a quick guide to Dobyns rods? From what I've heard, I Dobyns Medium Heavy Fast is more like a Medium Fast. That would mean a Dobyns Heavy would handle like a Medium Heavy and so on. What I'm wanting is a rod to take place of a Medium Fast action rod. That would mean I'd throw Texas rigs, spooks, poppers, and the occassional spinnerbait.
  9. Thanks for the advice. I think I will go with a 7:1 ratio on the MF and a 6:1 ratio on a MM. Can you explain why your recommended a 6:4:1 instead of the 6:8:1 that Lew's offers. Same goes with the 7.1. What exactly does the middle digit mean? I have looked at Dobyns online a little. Out of curiosity, why would you recommend the Dobyns @ $110 if St. Croix offers a $150 rod @90? I would presume that the higher price of the St. Croix translates to slightly higher quality. Thanks for your input!
  10. I did send St. Croix an email. Below is their reply. Dose anyone know of any stores that are currently offering the $50 each for two deal? Even if I plan to replace the MH soon? The MH has served me well, but I suspect that as soon as I get a feel for the nicer rods, I'll be eager to replace the MH. The idea was to get the MM rod because I don't have anything to throw crankbaits on at the moment. Thanks for your input. Please give me your thoughts.
  11. I got into bass fishing a little a couple of years ago. I'm tired of switching baits out on two of my rods. I'm going to ditch one crappy rod/reel and buy two nicer rod/reel setups. So here's what I have now: Berkley Lightning Rod 7' MH F w/ an Abu Garcia Pro Max 2 7:1 ratio (The goal is to replace the lightning rod for something a little nicer down the road.) I was doing a little looking around and I think I want a Medium Fast rod and a Medium Moderate rod. Here's what I'm thinking about buying: St. Croix Avid X 7' M F ($200) paired with a Lew's Tournament MB Speed Spool LFS Series 7:5:1 or 6:8:1 ratio ($140) St. Croix Rage 7'2" M M (found online for $90) paired with a Lew's Tournament MB Speed Spool LFS Series 5:6:1 ratio ($140) I'm not very knowledgable about rods in particular. I've done my fair share of research and I think I found two good rods. I do have a few questions. With the Axid X M F/Lew's Tournament MB setup, am I pairing too nice of a rod with a lower end reel? I did see that Lew's has a Tournament LITE Speed Spool, but I worry about having a carbon frame. With the Rage M M/Lew's Tournament MB setup, will this reel throw light baits and treble hook baits well? Is 7'2" too long for this setup? Please give me any advice/opinions you may have on these setups. Thanks in advance for any help on this!
  12. Does anybody here have any experience with Waterloo rods? I'm looking to buy a new rod and I'm thinking about going the Waterloo route.
