  1. Order from tackle warehouse before their 20 percent off everything sale ends tomorrow. Get some green pumpkin zinkerz's or zero's (they're the same thing sold by different companies) cut those in half and put them on 1/15 or 1/20 ounce finesse shroom-z mushroom head from z-man. Also try some 1/8 ounce inline spinners, they can be a killer river bait. The rebel crick hopper is a great bait for when they're feeding on crickets and grasshoppers that fall in the water, which is surprisingly often. The bitsy crank from strike king is great little crank for river small mouth to. And lastly although I havn't got a chance to try it out yet, I think z-man's new finesse tubez will be a killer river smallmouth bait when rigged on a 1/16 ounce mushroom head.
  2. Or you could do what I did, for another ~$400 you could get a decent used 14 foot aluminum boat with a small outboard and a trolling motor, plus they often come with things like anchors, fish finders (mine came with two) bilge pumps, rope, etc. It is way better than using a canoe or kayak like I used to, well worth the extra money in my opinion. Oh, and those little motors don't burn squat for gas, my 9.9 hp motor only burns about half of a gallon per trip at most.
  3. Somewhere around 240 days so far, but most of these were shorter ~4 hour trips rather than all day things. I've probably "only" fished about 70 all day fishing trips this year. I'm hoping to get another 20 trips in before new years, as long as the lakes don't freeze up to thick to plow threw with a canoe, which I don't think will happen till January unless the weather turns really cold really fast.
  4. Got out bass fishing yesterday for about two hours. Didn't do nearly as well as brian, but still managed 23 bass, the majority hit a blade bait and the rest ate the ned rig. They seemed to be schooled up on steep dropping points and shorelines, it would be a fish on about every cast for a few minutes then hardly anything until I found the next group. I also caught two really nice crappie on the blade, one measured 13 inches and the other almost fourteen inches. Hopefully today's predicted nearly an inch and a half of rain doesn't mess up the water clarity to much, last weeks rain didn't effect it at all so i'm hopefull.
  5. Because people are willing to buy them both.
  6. We're gonna need to have more info than that to help you much, such as what lures and techniques you plan to use with the rod.
  7. Wow, that's a lot of fish! It's not often I see a picture of bob holding something other than a crappie. You get them on the jerkbaits, blade baits, or bucktails?
  8. Looking back in my logs, the lures that caught the most fish this year in order are: Half of a green pumpkin ZinkerZ on a 1/16 ounce mushroom jig Booyah junior pad crasher in crinket frog pattern Booyah popping pad crasher again in cricket frog pattern Wacky rigged senko and senko imitations (mostly some version of green pumpkin, and also a fair amount of junebug) Rebel magnum Pop-r in tennessee shad color Several jerkbaits, mostly a doctored suspending rogue and recently a vison 110 Texas rigged senko and senko imitations, same colors as when wacky rigged Green pumpkin Z-man finesse worm-z on a 1/16 ounce mushroom head Strike king 1.5 squarebill in chartruse/black back color
  9. Since I was three. I couldn't even cast yet, so someone would throw my bobber and nightcrawlers out and tell me to jerk and reel as fast as I can once the little red and white bobber goes under. I still remember that day, it seemed like I caught giant bluegill nonstop for hours at the time.
  10. Got out on Thanksgiving, and did about the same in the same areas as Tuesday, except more crappie and white bass and less largemouth. Then I went out again yesterday and caught about fifteen bass, plus my I caught and released pb walleye at 23 inches long on a jerkbait! It surprisingly didn't fight very hard for it's size, but nonetheless exciting to have the first walleye I caught out of this particular lake to be my pb. Later on I switched to targeting crappie specifically instead of just having them as a bycatch. Ended up with 23 nice crappie (most of them measured between 10-13 inches) and 18 white bass in about two hours of fishing for them, all on small hair jigs. fished close to the bottom. Fished today, this time fishing for crappie the whole time. Ended the day with 30 nice fish, about half of them on the hair jig, and the rest were either caught on a crappie magnet or a minnow. They were on a drop off were it goes from roughly 15 feet down to 30, I was marking the majority of them suspended but most of the fish I caught were within two feet of the bottom. Must have been that the more active fish were on the bottom for some reason.
  11. Hm, it let me use it after a few tries but it showed up as $0.00 off. I'll have to keep trying.
  12. Is everyone else able to use the FHABAQ214 code, for some reason it won't let me?
  13. Yep, cold water bass love hair jigs. Just yesterday I caught almost 45 fish, mostly on an 1/8 ounce Bucktail jig.
  14. Tacklewarehouse has a 20% off sale every black Friday.
  15. I use the alberto knot if i'm on the lake cause it's so much faster, but if i'm rigging up in advance I use the FG knot.
  16. I already got one of the spinning rods, and it feels pretty good and fairly sensitive (especially for 12.99). It's a little tip heavy and it's got a shorter handle, so I think it will be perfect for jerkbaits. Definitely runs a smidge on the lite side for it's rating though.
  17. Me to, and I plan on going fishing, but there's no reason I can't order some great deals online and go fishing.
  18. Fished yesterday afternoon for about four hours. Caught a total of 37 fish, 28 of them largemouth, 5 white bass, and 4 nice crappie. Water clarity was good with about four feet of visibility, and the surface water temperature was 50 degrees. A little over half of the bass hit half of a znker-z, a couple of the white bass and about a dozen bass ate the vision 110, and the crappie and the other white bass bit the Bucktail jig. Biggest bass weighed 3.4 pounds, and most of the rest were about 15 inches, which i would consider pretty good size. All of the fish were on either a dam or a steep dropping point next to it. Best day on the water I've had in a few weeks, hopefully today's rain doesn't screw that up to much.
  19. They've also got a 6'6" medium fast spinning rod on sale, plus an 5'6" extra fast action, ultralight rod.
  20. I prefer a 7' medium powered, fast action rod.
  21. I'll be out there fishing, despite the 40 degree weather. At least it'll be warmer than last Saturday when we were hit with thirty degree weather, light snow, freezing rain, topped off with twenty to thirty mile an hour winds. I about froze my fingers and nose off that day. Anyone going fishing on Thanksgiving?
  22. Gander mountain has their vortex rods marked down from 59.99 to only 12.99!
  23. Bottom line is that braid is not abrasion resistant. They just aren't thick enough to handle any nicks in them without significant strength reductions or breaking. I would suggest using a mono or flouro leader with braid, they have a much higher diameter than braid. If you are determined to use straight braid, use heavier braid when you need the abrasion resistance. Instead of looking at the pound tests, look at the diameter as this is more accurate than the line rating, because the line rating's vary greatly and aren't accurate.
  24. I knew there was a state record fish and fish of the year programs, but I thought he meant something more along the lines of what Virginia does. But know I see that must be what he's talking about. Looks like I should have entered my channel catfish and common carp last year, or had a witness verify the length measurement on a channel I caught this year.
