  1. Take a look at the Dobyns 765 flip. It is a rod I love to have when I am fishing as a co-angler. I can throw anything from a spinnerbait or a chatterbait to flipping and pitching heavy cover. Its also a great rod for horny toads and buzzbaits.
  2. I have both the Dobyns 805 and the 795. They're both great rods but I have to give the nod to the 795. Its a better all around rod and is a little more versital compared to the 805.
  3. Have you actually seen that kind of speed on the gps? If you have Id love to hear the setup you or someone else had to achieve it. Ive never head of any legit speeds like that but, Im always trying to squeeze out a little more speed out of my PIV. ;D .
  4. I have the same boat and know where your at, I had the same problem with the rev limiter. The 27 should help with the rev limiter, just dont expect to get 75mph out of the boat. Its simply not that fast of a boat. 72 is maybe possible under optimal conditons and a super light load.
  5. The 766 will be perfect for anything flipping baits in that 3/8 to 1oz . If your thinking about throwing a frog with this rod definately go with the 766 over the 764, you will need the extra power to hook and land bigger fish on a frog.
  6. I usually try to avoid any kind of weeds when I throw my dart heads since I rig them up so they have an exposed hook. I throw mine on rocky and clay banks for the most part. If theres any kind of cover around I'll use a shakey head instead, to prevent hangups.
  7. My favorite all around setup is a Dobyns DX702sf with some 6lb floro. I usually throw a 1/4oz head for most of my fishing situations with a 6inch roboworm in either warmouth or oxblood. 99% of the time I'm just gonna drag it and shake it along the bottom slowly. Youll get a lot of bites with this technique and its a great way to catch pressured fish or when the fish dont seem to want to bite anything else.
  8. An osprey top hook talon is another good option at clear lake. Light hitch is the best color for swimbaits at clear lake hands down. Dark hitch works well too, but those are the only 2 colors you need.
  9. Ive tried them on some of my topwater baits and they do work very well at hooking fish and keeping them hooked. The only problem Ive had is that the points on the hooks roll over extremely easily. Ive had 6 out of the 8 hooks Ive bought bend the hook points over. Ive also had one hook break completely off. Ive heard they've fixed this problem. If I knew they wouldn't have the hook points roll Id definitely buy more of them.
  10. He's saying these things because he wants to help people catch fish. Why are you worrying about getting a frog wrapped in a tree? I don't understand why you would sacrifice your chances hooking and landing fish just so your lure doesn't hang up a couple times during the day. I would much rather get hung up a few times then lose a good fish because I couldn't penetrate the fishes mouth with the hooks. Why even try to get the bite in the first place when your odds of landing the fish are greatly decreased because your not using the right tackle. Your setting yourself up disappointment. I'm all for experimentation with fishing. Its a great way to come up with new ideas, but there are some things that just plain work the best and should not be done another way. I'm sure that 99% of the pros that fish for a living fish frogs on braid. There's a reason for that. Like I said earlier stack the deck in your favor when your fishing there's no reason to take risks unless you like the feeling of losing fish. Like David said with this site so many people give poor advice because they've done something one way and it worked ONE time. Just because it worked one time doesn't mean its the best way to do it especially when it comes to your tackle.
  11. Don't do it. There's no reason to. Your chances of landing a fish on a frog with braid goes up ten fold compared to mono. Your not gonna land nearly as many fish especially on a long cast. Stack the deck in your favor and use braid.
  12. If you get a power-pole you will find that the different ways you are able to use it in are endless. Its not just a bed fishing thing like a lot of guys think. It can and will be utilized anytime your in shallow water. I fish in shallow water a lot and use it every time I go out. It allows me to slow down and cover the water effectively. It will hold you in place in wind and current no problem. There is a learning curve with the power-pole but once you get accustomed to it you will be able to use it with out thinking. They are pricey no doubt but they are built to last a long time. If you pm me I can show you the place I ordered mine from and maybe save you some money.
  13. I think the color is more important than the actual lure. I like anything I can put a big hook in and that has a good hook up and land percentage. I use a white tube a lot to make the fish angry but a lot of times it takes a color change to make them commit.
  14. Are you using a glass bead? If so the tungsten will break it and nick your line.
  15. One thing that is paramount in a frog rod is its length. Use the longest rod you are comfortable with but always remember the longer the better. You also want a rod with a parabolic action. You can get by with a fast tipped rod on smaller fish but on the bigger fish you will lose them a lot of the time if they make a hard surge. And of course you want to have a heavy action rod, at least a 5 power preferably a 6 and maybe even a 7 power rod if your fishing around heavy cover.
  16. Im curious as to why you wouldnt want to move as much line as possible, if you evalutate the strike you should have no problem hooking 9 out of 10 fish that eat it. Get the longer and heavier rod for frogs. There are no disadvantages with a longer rod.
  17. The smaller size does not affect the action at all it swims identically to the larger models. It has great tail action and a subtle side to side rock from the body.
  18. I love my Nucli Eye led black light. I used to have a couple of the flourescent black lights but they are nothing compared to the Nucli Eye. Its way brighter and I only need one to light up the whole side of my 19ft boat. I have had it for a few years now and have had no problems with it.
  19. I have a xc705 and I really like it. It is very sensitive, fairly light and very well balanced. They also stand behind their product. I have sent back numerous rods and have at most been charged 50$ for a replacement.
  20. Heres another link that will take you to a page that you can show your support for the california delta and your opposition to the peripheral canal. http://campaign.constantcontact.com/render?v=001YV3QsNmUiFOktxcjvupHToqQOUu_YBkD8j3nZXds2zBoWKdzpdUY0bItR-rf_knpINYUS-jXp7YaQIPpQEVmUlfNYN2F4Wk_JBljZW968Lu-2p8NTyCP_Q%3D%3D Please show your support by signing the petition and sending a few letters to your senator and assembly memeber. It takes no more than 5 minutes and is a crucial step in saving the delta.
  21. I snell a Pay Check Baits punch hook. Its the same as the old reaction innovation BMF hook. I peg the 1 1/2 oz weight just because some of the stuff I fish is so thick there is no other way to get it though. This is the best combination I have found so far for punching.
  22. What the California government is going to do is they are going to divert all the snow melt water that usually flows into the delta and pump it to the central valley. They are gonna do this via a 100 car lane wide canal that flows from the top of the delta into the valley. This is gonna cause a mess of problem to the delta. First the delta's not gonna have any fresh water flowing in causing salt water to run all through the delta. So instead of fishing for bass you'll be fishing for flounder and leopard shark. Also with the lack of fresh water flow the delta will turn into a toxic dump. They are already starting this by building 2 dams one on the eastern side of franks tract and one in connection slough. They are covering up this scam by saying they are trying to help the delta smelt. They are also not telling anyone about this. The governor set up a delta committee which has full power to do what ever they want in regards to the delta. NO voting. To help show your support please contact your elected official and tell them how displeased you are. Also there is going to be a demonstration held on the 16th and 17th of august to show the media what is really going on. You can find more information about this demonstration on http://www.millionboatfloat.org/index.htm Please come and show your support to save the delta. We need everyone's help to show this corrupt government we mean business. Bryant Smith
  23. I have 3 daiwa lunas and I love them. They will cast the big baits miles and have the power to winch the big ones in.
  24. KVD line and lure works on all fishing line. It will take some memory out of mono and make it a little slicker which helps casting distance. And if you flip a lot with mono it will help the line slide through your fingers much better.
  25. I'm sure many of you have heard about what it is going on involving the delta and the proposed dams and peripheral canal. In case you haven't please take some time and look at the problems recreational fisherman are being faced with. Here is a link to a video that will explain what is going on. http://www../videopage.php?0000758 Here is a few more links with more info about this situation. http://www.calsport.org/ http://www.restorethedelta.org/ I know it is late notice but there will be a rally involving recreational fishermen like yourselves as well as many other groups who dont support this new proposal. The rally is going to be at the California State Capitol's North Steps in Sacramento, CA at 11:00a.m. tomorrow. Please do whatever you can to support this cause to fight this problem if you value your delta. Thank you for reading, Bryant Smith
