I resemble that remark! Ive been an LEO for almost 11 years and I love my job. We have agencies locally that have a hard time recruiting and its usually related to people not wanting to work for those agencies due to leadership philosophy and pay. I work for an agency that offers good training, opportunity to be involved in niche areas like drug enforcement, gangs, street crimes, etc.
Another issue is standards. We often hire young recruits out of college who haven't been anywhere or done anything. They dont put what they see on the job in context with life experience. But, they can pass a polygraph because they've never done anything unfavorable. Lots of great candidates are eliminated because of small issues from their past and most isn't even criminal. But, they would be great officers because they've seen the dark side and aren't naive about it.
