Ok, I suppose I can weigh in on this. I am one of those wonderful people in the state office evaluating families for benefits.
What you all fail to realize is there are people out there that genuinely need and deserve a helping hand. Unfortunately, it only takes one person to make the system seem all about a "hand out." In my three years of doing this job, I have seem both ends of the spectrum but the majority of people on my caseload are good people. Some made bad decisions when they were younger, some continue to make bad decisions later in life, some in this area have bad decisions made for them and they end up losing their jobs.
Does it irritate me when people I KNOW are earning money under the table are able to get away without claiming it? YES
Do I know I am doing a lot of people a great service by providing health care and food stamp benefits when they are in a time of need? YOU CAN BET YOUR PAYCHECK ON IT.
Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who not only works in this field, but I also have a second job in the evening. So, yeah, its a little difficult to see a 20 year old with no health issues tell me they cant find a job.
My main point is that there are both good and bad involved in the welfare system, mostly good. But as with all things, people only point out the bad things and assume "they are all that way."
