I caught my first bass 58 years ago. I live in slime country and bass we’re a joke decades ago and to many, still are. I did the salmon, trout, steelhead deal but 40 years ago made bass the priority. I don’t see myself as improving as much as expanding. I want to expand my skills and knowledge as an angler. The most impacting way is to fish different bodies of water. I mean diverse locations from ponds to big reservoirs and anything in between. If you have a comfort zone, get out of it once and awhile.

I fish/rig a Hula Grub three ways. The primary rig is on an exposed hook football jig head. Quarter ounce 3/0 wire hook gets 90 percent of my use. I will run a 3/8 ounce 3/0 with weed guard when wood comes into play. I rarely rig them Texas style but have around vegetation. The primary retrieve is dragging. Then I may lift and drag. Regardless, I want to mimic crayfish. I fish mine on a medium action spinning rod.

I purchased a spool of 30lb for pitching in pads and bog bean. The feature that sold me was it’s “stiffness” for braid. It minimizes the sag found in Smack Down. Any thoughts?

I can’t establish what you can or can’t afford, want or need. I know what I like and what works for me. I want certain features, powers and actions. I spend/invest what I have to to get what I want. What I can say is I am open to 300.00 for very specific rods and 275.00 for reels but they are above the norm.

Deep cranking reel benefits from a lower ratio and 100 mm handle. The Tatula 150 in 5.5 is great but so is the LEWS BB1. I think the LEWS is on sale via TW. That would be a hard one to pass up.

It’s a rod that has taken some getting used to. Blanks with nano resin technology have a unique feel. It’s super light and perfectly balanced with awesome components. Sensitivity is tremendous but it’s different than the feel of a Loomis. The action is not quite as fast as I anticipated but I was using the Xtreme 745 as the base line. The 722 SF is phenomenal.

Pre spawn killers. Flats, shallower ledges and over emerging grass is good. Stump beds are also very good. A double willow in heavier weights really help you maintain the speed in your retrieve. I almost think of a spinnerbait as a jerk bait for how you address chop, clarity and how high in the water column. Fast is always my starting point. I love translucent skirts for smallmouth. Smallmouth really tear a spinnerbait up. That’s a great problem to have.
