  1. I've got you beat brother. I went to Cleveland. It was breath taking. Hakarl is Icelandic scrapple.
  2. Love Hockey. It took me along time to understand the game but when I did, it took on a whole new perspective. We have a minor Western League in Portland which is the developmental team for the Chicago Black Hawks. It's the the only other venue other than the Maltese Tavern where you can sit back and watch a bunch youngin's beat each other to a pulp before someone intervenes.
  3. The 703 will work better than just Okay. If you can grab a deal on a refurb 703, that's a great option. Build your arsenal around that rod. "The best place to start is at the beginning.."
  4. The most versatile model in the Dobyns line(s) is the 734. The 735 is a model you will eventually want regardless so, being it's on your list, that's a great choice. I have three Fury's (664,733,735) and they fish well above their price point. The Sierra will be just a tiny bit slower in it's action than the Fury. Something to consider.
  5. Dobyns new Champion 744c jig special and don't look back. This a great rod. It's got it's on signature feel, loads great and the balance is spot on. It's always on the deck.
  6. Good color choice. Straight flouo or a composite rod working the bait any where a spinner bait and or swim jig would be applied.
  7. Normans Deep Little N and Luhr Jensen 1/4 Hot Lips.
  8. I think some lures shine over other depending on the situation. How the fish set up will drive the way I fish a jig, but the jig is very versatile and that's what makes it so effective.
  9. There's a place for both. Regardless of what material you decide on, a moderate action will best suit the size of baits you are throwing and more important the hook sizes. PapaJoe 222 and I share the same opinion.
  10. Worm by Nick Creme.
  11. Once upon a time there was a simple minded fisherman who liked to try new equipment and was kind of looking for something better. Well he bought a mid tier Diawa casting reel. The simple minded angler took it out and gave the reel a shot. Well he couldn't get it to cast well at all. It also made a high pitch sound during hard casts. The angler could not figure the issue out and chalked it up as a brand he wouldn't purchase in the future. Much later, the angler read some comments on a FORUM and found out, the inductor on a magforce Z Diawa can become torqued off center and not retract properly. Pulling the inductor out, gently, and allowing the spring to re-seat it would have fixed the issue. The angler changed his opinion of the brand and now fishes happily ever after with other Diawa products, some with the SV spool/casting feature. It's wonderful how a little question or dialogue and answer can help someone who wasn't going to ask that question to begin with. Well done Rippin-Lips.
  12. I'm all about a gut feeling. It happens every time I try to snap the button on my pants. God gave us a series of senses and we have a history of acquired experiences. Some times the lizard side of our brain actually works and those senses and experiences come together and we come to a gut feeling. The deductive reasoning side of the brain doesn't get credit so it's a gut feeling. If it isn't that, it's a little Roland Martin standing on your shoulder whispering ' Shallow Son....shallow and a little KVD on the other shoulder whispering, "go deep dummy."
  13. I have only owned two Avids and it's been 7 years since I moved them. They fished slow to me. In fairness, they were casting and not spinning. They were very nice rods, just not exactly fast enough.
  14. I owned a Savvy 703SF and paired it with a Stradic 3000. The balance was about perfect. I traded it up to an Extreme but still have two Champion 703SF's and they are matched with Saros 3000 reels. Balance is great. The Sierra series is slightly slower than the Champion and Fury but sensitivity is very very good. Dobyns did a super job in the upgrade of the Savvy's. The Sierra's are fine rods.
  15. UV can kill you. No joke.
  16. Ordering a Diawa will be like ordering a coffee drink at Starbucks. " May I have a Diawa, Tatula, CT, SV, TWS, left hand, in the 8.1 ratio ?" "Oh...and toss in a pair of BOCA bearings and a 90 MM carbon fiber handle for later." "And let me pay for the guy ahead of me. A Loomis NRX ? Never mind "
  17. DSPC SBCR Confused ? Depth, Speed, Profile, Color in that order.........Shad, Bright, Crawfish, Regional I used to place too much emphasis on color. or at least the subtle difference between color patterns. When I saw Rapala's color pallet, it started to make sense. There are day to day basic common color schemes for just about every brand. Then there are those " regional " color schemes. See the scheme in my avatar. It may not work in 90% of the country but it's a must have on the Columbia River in the spring. It's a regional color scheme. I like the way GGM stated it. I made lure selection far too complicated and my bank account suffered because of it. Just my 2 cents. It's all I have left after buying 30 colors of Deep Little N's.
  18. I have the CT and CT Type R. The Type R has a slightly lighter spool and a slightly better set of spool bearings. With that said, the standard Tatula CT performs just as well. I honestly think the Tatula CT, at a hundred bucks, is the best reel value on the market right now. I know the BPS Pro qualifiers are down to fifty bucks and that, as an entry level reel is hard to beat but the CT is still in my opinion a much better reel over all. The performance of reels in the lower price points today is truly amazing.
  19. Hop and drop, drag and swim it.
  20. My next rod will be the end of my marriage with an extra fast tip.
  21. I'm proud of my ancestry. I was able to follow my grandfather on my mother's side back to 1547, all English. My grandmother was a bit more difficult but it's starts in a small village in Norway. My Dad's side was easy with a name like McDougal in his mother's side. My grandfather was given up by his parents in the 1880's in London. Any records from the Bernardo School for boys were destroyed during the Blitz in 1944. I've made sure my kids all know our history. Epithelial swab anyone ?
  22. You beat me to it. Oooooohhhhhhhhhhhh....I gotcha a dollar.
  23. Glacier Glove for me. No more blisters for this guy.
  24. Depending on what day you call, you might get stuck talking to Gary Dobyns and all he did was design these rods. I would bet you bag of Senkos he would recommend the Champion 766C. Wanna Bet ?
  25. These are your options with Dobyns: Fury 765 flip Sierra 766 Flip Champion 765, 766, 736 Extreme HP 746, 795 All will perform the techniques you are looking at. All are braid friendly. I have a Champion 765 Flip and it's the rod I would lean towards. I also have an Extreme 795 and it's a better punching rod when your lighter weight is an ounce. The 766 is a bit too stiff for my liking but it's very popular. Good luck
