  1. There could be many reasons why you are not getting many hookups on a spinnerbait. Maybe this spinnerbait comes with a dull hook that is of poor quality (big bass have hard mouths so you need a quality sharp hook to go through the bone), maybe the spinnerbait is too small or too large for the bass you are targeting, maybe you set the hook too hard which is a common problem with people that fish spinnerbaits and frogs. I have caught plenty of gar on spinnerbaits in the Everglades and many other species of fish. What is the rating of your rod? Heavy action, medium action, etc? I prefer using heavy action rods when using spinnerbaits, but I tend to use big spinnerbaits since I am specifically targeting big bass.
  2. A 6-7 foot medium heavy spinning rod, size 2000-4000 spinning reel, 12 pound test mono, and a couple different lures is a good way to start bass fishing. You can buy more gear if you want, but a simple sets up is all that is needed for most bass fishing.
  3. The spinnerbait is probably one of the most unnatural looking lures but there are many other ones that look unnatural. Pink, chartreuse, orange, yellow or other bright artificial lure colors can be very productive in the right conditions...

  5. No animal in a bass natural habitat looks like a spinnerbait yet a spinnerbait is one of the best lures for bass. Bass also hit other lures that look nothing like the forage in the area yet these lures catch lots of bass.
  6. Depends on what size bass I am fishing for and the location, weather condition, moon phase, time of year, etc I am fishing in. If I am fishing for large numbers of bass I tend to use reaction type lures if the fish are active. If they are being picky I start using finesse presentations. If I am fishing for big bass I use techniques that are better for big bass but not so much for small/medium bass. Sometimes the regular established patterns won't work and I have to figure out what technique will get the bass to bite, maybe a technique most people in my area do not use, which often gets the bass to bite.

  8. I agree with you that most largemouth bass are not very picky when it comes to fishing line. I recently caught a +7 pound, 24 inch bass on a 100 pound test mono leader as bycatch while fishing for big snook. I use this heavy line since snook ( especially the big ones) have a sharp gillplate that can easily cut smaller sized lines. Have also caught other bass with very thick mono leaders or wire leaders while targeting other species. Well said
  9. Come to Florida and you will see lots of grassy lakes, ponds, rivers, etc. Many of these lakes are full with hydrilla, sawgrass, cattails, maidencane, lily pads, spatterdock, and other aquatic vegetation. Weedless lures ( such as Texas rigged soft plastics and hollow belly frogs) work very well in these places.
  10. Far enough to catch bass under tree limbs, docks, man made structures, etc
  11. It would be best to buy a digital scale along with a tape measure and always bring it with you on your fishing trips. That way you will know for certain how much a bass weighs.
  12. It would be best to buy a digital scale along with a tape measure and always bring it with you on your fishing trips. That way you will know for certain how much a bass weighs. Most of the 5-5.5 pounders I have caught are somewhere around 20-22" inches in length, the bass you showed in this picture appears to be less than 20" so I would say your bass should be above 3.0 pounds but under 4.5.
  13. Congratulations to Mrs. Roberts for catching a 9 pound, 15 ounce trophy bass from public waters from land. Most men will spend their whole lifetime bass fishing and never catch a bass of this size.
  14. I fish at night often for both freshwater and saltwater species of fish. Have caught some of my biggest bass at night. Well said
  15. Good subject. I cherish every single minute I get to fish and never take it for granted.
  16. I learned another lesson this month. Snook will bite a hollow belly frog just like a bass will and the fight a snook gives on a frog is much more powerful than what a bass can do. I now see myself snook fishing with frogs and it will have to be a very big bass to keep me interested in bass fishing at this moment in time.

  20. Glad to hear that you got proper treatment and you are taking care of your health. Looking towards to hearing reports of your fishing trips.
  21. Thank you for your report. The bass fishing is on fire in the Everglades right now since the water level is dropping and its every easy to catch +50 bass in 1 day if a person wanted to.
  22. The closest I fish from home is a canal that is less than 200 feet from my house. This canal has very good fishing for largemouth bass, peacock bass, snook, tarpon, and many other fish. I can easily get comfortable and just fish this canal, but I like to travel for fishing. With that said, I often make long drives to reach some awesome spots I have. I also travel out of state to catch fish on my fishing bucket list and will continue doing it( I caught muskies, smallies, palomino trout, etc last year on some of my travels and got other out of state fishing trips coming up this year).
