  1. For those asking about where to fish from shore at the Charles River during the winter, it's the spot described by CavScoutA21. You have to fish right next to the wall; there's no need to cast it out away from the wall. Just drop the bait down or you can cast from the right side shore parallel to the wall. The closer to the wall, the better. Drag football jigs, and you will catch at least 1 bass. The bottom is rocky, so it's great for jig fishing. There are a LOT of bluegills and good sized crappies during this time of the year. There is another good spot during the winter that's behind some hotel towards Cambridge, but I've never tried there.
  2. Stopped by the Charles River today and caught over 10 bass. All of them were fat and healthy. They were going for the chatterbait at first, but then, the jig was the bait to use. I caught 2 on a jerkbait too.
  3. 6.3:1 has gold accents. 7.3:1 red accents. 8.1:1 purple accents.
  4. I normally use left handed reels, but there was one time when I injured my right hand's pinky and couldn't really have a good hold of the rod. I bought a right handed reel and used it for like 2 months. I had no issues with it when fishing with jigs or pitching, but I just couldn't fish with frogs at all. I couldn't walk the bait, but thankfully, my finger is healed, and I'm back to the lefties. Setting a good hookset was tough at first.
  5. Really glad I went to the Charles River today. I had both quantity and quality, which rarely happens to me. The quality bass were caught on football jigs while the quantity, on a LC Pointer SP. It was exciting to catch my first fish on a jerkbait. Caught around 12 and lost like 3 or 4. Biggest one of the day weighted 4.7lb, followed by 4.3lb, and a couple more between 2 and 3lb.
  6. If I remember correctly, you had to edit the link of TW Christmas' sale. Hopefully, someone else knows what to add to the link.
  7. Went back to same spot as yesterday, but I only caught 3 largies using the ned rig. It was too windy, which made it hard to feel the bait (went more finesse today).
  8. I fished at the Charles for 2 hours and caught around 10 bass on a Ned rig. Nothing big, but they were all fat and pretty feisty. Biggest one was probably around 1.5 lb
  9. I called them during their 15% off sale in July, and Megabass was included (only gift cards were excluded). I purchased a MB Orochi XX rod with a 15% discount. Try giving them a call and see what happens.
  10. I tried with another topwater lure, the Ima in bone color. It got crushed on my first cast by what would have been my new PB smallie until a snapping turtle bit the fish out of nowhere. I lost my lure and the smallie, but while I was trying to get my lure back, I managed to let the fish free out of that turtle's mouth lol.
  11. I went back and caught my PB smallie on a Whopper Plopper 90. They were crushing the Whopper Plopper
  12. Recently moved to Waltham and found a great spot in the Charles River with bunch of smallies. Caught 4 today, and I saw one that's at least 2lb.
  13. I fished at the Brookline Reservoir a lot last year, but I only stayed past the sunset twice during the Summer. I noticed that at around 7:30-8:30PM, the fish were definitely more active. I was throwing a Rapala minnow jerkbait and kept getting bites. I also had a bunch of bites with a T-rigged rage craw. This year, however, I've been there less than 4 times, but I noticed there is way too much vegetation under water. I haven't found a pattern yet, but during the day, some bass tend to hang around that small house in the opposite side of Warren St.
  14. No problem. Forgot to mention, try casting parallel to the wall. Bottom is hard with many "cracks/fissures", but hitting/bumping those spaces with jigs works great, especially when the water is still cold.
  15. I usually skip the Esplanade area during this time of the year, but the spot where the Muddy River meets the Charles River is one of my favorite places. When I went there last week, there were bunch of bait fish, and I caught a few bass on the whopper plopper. Also, on the Keitech tungsten football jig (black&blue), cabin creek spider jig, and Senko wacky rig. Btw, if you have anything that resembles an eel, it might work great. I've seen birds eating bunch of eels in that spot.
  16. Whopper plopper has been really effective for me. I was fishing under the BU bridge yesterday, and had 4 bites right before the sunset.
  17. Caught this bass today at the Charles River on a Cabin Creek jig. Biggest fish of the year so far at 5lbs. I also lost 3 that were similar in size.
  18. Have you considered the Daiwa Tatula rods? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FPQUAFE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468444383&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=daiwa+tatula+rod&dpPl=1&dpID=21HVz-3YemL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1
  19. The older Metanium DC can be found for around $350. The 15 Metanium DC is at least $450 nowadays due to the yen going up.
  20. Oh my mistake, I should have clarified that the ones we usually catch are less than 6-7lb, and we mainly target wolf fish. However, it's not unusual to hook a dorado while looking for the latter species. From my experience, wolf fish and bass are very similar in terms of their behavior, fight, and how to fish them, so a bass rod works great. A small dorado runs more for sure, but a bass rod handles this well enough. My friend had no issues with a Veritas MH. I have a 2 piece Fenwick 6'6" Heavy action for the big ones; I just wanted something lighter and longer.
  21. I called TW, and they told me everything is on sale (15% off) besides their gift card. Really tempted to order a MB Orochi XX DSR right now.
  22. Thanks for the help. I will do some more research for the blanks since there's still a lot of things I don't know. I read great reviews about the Phenix rod blanks, but some people mentioned it's more prone to breakage... If I were to use it for dorados in Argentina, I'm worried it might break.
  23. I think the tour versatile is too heavy for what I'm looking for. Thanks though. -------------------------------------------------- All the reels I have with me so far. It was my first time "customizing" (just the RCS cork knob) my reels, and it was easier than what I thought. I had to sacrifice one of the J-Dream's knob though due to the screw getting stuck...
  24. Thanks a lot for this. Isn't the SJ843 a spinning rod blank? I think Kistler had a 2-piece blank, but it didn't match what I was looking for. The other thing I was considering was buying a 1-piece rod and ask a rod builder to make it into a 2-piece, but this would void the warranty... I didn't receive your PM
  25. Hi, While searching for my ideal 2-piece casting rod, I thought about going custom for the first time. I tried researching brands that do so, but I couldn't find anything. I contacted Kistler, but he told me the blank (its length to be more precise) I was looking for is really hard to find ("does not exist"). The specs for my rod would be: - 7'2" lenght, center cut -fast action -sensitive blank like the one used by Kistler (I don't know much about this topic tbh) -cork grip preferably (split or full doesn't matter) -techniques: jigs (3/8oz usually), chatterbait (3/8oz), pitching (1/2oz tungsten weight), frogs. Not too heavy cover. I would like to keep this between $300-350. The rod that fits my criteria the closest is the new Poison Adrena, but if I can get a custom rod at that price, I'd rather go with the latter. Any help or recommendation would be awesome. Thanks.
