  1. Daiwa has dropped the Exceler which was built on a different body than any Tatula. It then brought out a Fuego CT built on the Tatula CT body, it offers a $100 Daiwa without the T wing. It has the same number bearings as the Exceler. Next it offers multiple CT models, a Fuego 100 built with 12 ball bearings, and all of the Tatula 100 sized models. All of those cost under $200 including the new Tatula CT SV model. I am certain that played in to Shimano's pricing.
  2. If anything it is probably to compete with the Daiwa reels in the $100 to $175 range
  3. I can tell you from my experience the T wing works very well. I have been systematically selling of my Shimano Curado Es and Chronarchs (200 E7s) and BPS Extremes and going to all Daiwas. I own one Exceler, 4 Tatula Type Rs and two Tatula CTs. I really like the way they cast and their drags are really smooth. In my area, of the Chesapeake Bay, we target bass and stripers but often catch large channel and blue cats. The abuse those fish put on a reel is amazing. I have had two of the big blues almost spool me. Each time they ran off the side of an island and directly under the boat. I had to have my partner lift the trolling motor, work the rod and line around the boat and then get the fish caught. I have friends that fish on the Potomac and they run into the big snake heads. Those fish are ridiculous, they grow fast and fight really hard. I am still going to add 4 more Daiwas, as my budget allows. More than likely they will be Tatula CTs. The only thing about the Daiwas that you might find negative is the size. Most Lews reels are pretty small. Take a good look at the Tatula CTs as they are the smaller reel. Both size reels hold the same amount of line so that does not matter.
  4. I have the Champion DC 705C and love it. I chose it over the 735C because I can not fit the longer rod in my rod box. The rods are similar but the 735 does it better. It is amazing how well the 705C can throw a hollow bodied frog when matched up with a Daiwa Tatula 8-1 reel.
  5. Go catch up with Tom and put one in your hands. Or go over to baybass.com and ask some of the users of those rods from Tom. Bryan probably owns more Tom's rods than even Tom himself. Bryan can give you a run down on each blank he has used in his custom builds. While you are there read through some of his fishing reports, specifically for his rod/reel/ lure reports from his catches. Bryan, Dennis, Dmass and others regularly fish those rods.
  6. The guy behind the counter probably tells everyone that because he is probably a fan of Lews reels.
  7. I will also suggest a Falcon rod but this is a recommendation for a Falcon BuCoo Micro 7 foot medium heavy med fast rod called a Trap Caster. That rod runs $129 but can often be found for less.
  8. My 2010 Lowe bass boat was originally purchased and rigged special to make it run well on a specific horse powered restricted lake. It is a 17 1/2 foot long- 1000 pound hull. It is rated for a 75 hp engine. I installed a T&H marine trim plate called a PT 35. Any bass boat that is under powered is going to be rough to get on plane. The PT-35 cost $500 and gives the smaller motors trim and tilt. I then installed a Mercury 25 HP 2 stroke engine, changed props till I got it right and added an original Stingray Jr. hydrofoil fin. My boat is a bit heavier than yours and I was using a 2 stroke carbed motor which has a better throttle response, I had a boat that came out of the hole well, in fact in a very short burst (less than a boat length) and had a top speed of 18 mph. It ran very well even in big Tennessee lakes like Dale Hollow. It would never beat a properly powered rig home but it was great for my use. In your case I bet you will see 15 mph, but I am more concerned with your hole shot , as I do not like a boat that takes too long to get up on plane. I think that is too unsafe. Okay I did some investigating and the boat you are looking at is 17 foot long and much narrower in beam than today's boats. It only rated for a 25 Hp engine and the hull only weighs around 600 pounds. I still think it will reach around 12 to 15 mph max. Since it weighs much less than my boat fully rigged it will be able to better use the 20HP. I would think about adding the trim tilt and a Stingray jr and enjoy it. Before I did anything I would get a ride and evaluate how it comes out of the hole and how it feels on top end. I ran a 16 foot jon boat with a 9.9 for years on the Susquehanna river and was happy as a lark. Fast enough is all personal choice. For some a Bullet bass boat is not fast enough.
  9. Check out the custom 6'9 spinning rod in stock. Compare it to the Dobyns, The Irod, the Powells etc. Tom can build you anything you want. His work is amazing. He is located in Bel Air MD. Take a look at his website http://www.tomscustomrods.com/custom-rods-galley/ If you have an idea of what your ideal rod is, he will sit down with you. He has so many parts in stock he will lay out options for reel seats, guides, blanks, and everything else. If you look on his website you can get an idea of just a small part of his wizardry. He will go over different options and many times mock it up right there. The rods he is building for the store use the old style G Loomis blanks. They are MHX brand. They are nice blanks. He also uses a bunch of different blanks as well. You can get original St Croix blanks, Point Blank and many more. Give him a call. If you go custom take a good look at the Winn Grips and MicroWave guides. On a spinning rod they are awesome.
  10. Keitech makes some good baits. They do have a different action. It is nice to try some of each. When my stripers enter the creeks in the fall ( they come in chasing alewife who winter in the creeks) we chase them with Redeye shads, Xcalibur regular and one knockers as well a Bill Lewis Rattle traps. It is the only time I end up with 4 rattletrap rods on deck at one time. The crazy rock can often lock into one sound and color and ignore the other ones. Tomorrow it will change, so go figure. Try it all and see what works that day.
  11. I sent you a couple of pms. There are lots of boats out there. Be sure to avoid jumping in on the first thing you see. Also have your money ready because if it is the right deal it may not last for long. Here is a cool article my friend wrote about doing justthis thing. http://www.baybass.com/node/200 In this article he wrote about getting his old boat prepped and made as beautiful as possible to get max sales value, all while chasing his "perfect" next boat. I witnessed it, both selling the old and a relentless daily search for what he now loves to fish from. He goes through what to look for and what to watch out for. And it is titled the "Under $10K bass boat. This is a good read for anyone looking at a used boat.
  12. I did the tough job of stopping at Anglers for you. They have a Sierra SF 693SF in stock. Man they are wiping out the big order of DObyns fast. They just got them about 2 weeks ago. They have to have sold 1/2 of the order in that time. One other thing is they are going to be selling a custom series "store brand". Tom of Tom's custom rods is building some, they just got 3 in to begin with. Tom does beautiful work.
  13. Go to Bass Pro and get a Pro Qualifier for $50
  14. I fish the Little Dippers and Big dippers three ways depending on the water depth. First I like the Gamakatsu® Spring-Lock Plastic Hooks, then the Gamakatsu® Weighted Spring Lock Hook and finally the The Picasso Smart Mouth Plus Jig Head 3X Mustad in 3/8 and 1/2 oz.
  15. I am jealous! Seriously call first because I know he has been pumping a lot of Dobyns through there/ If he does not have it in stock he will get it.Also I am serious let him know i sent you. He has been taking good care of my friends. I have sent him a BUNCH of business. I love the fact I can go put my hands on a rod, compare it to another brand or two as well. At this point I used to love G Loomis bt do not like the changes made to the IMXs or GL series. I have become a huge fan of the Dobyns, Powells and Irods.
  16. Powell Max 683CEF 6'8" mh xf with a Daiwa Tatula CT 6.3-1 My lures would be: Reaction Innovation Skinny Dippers with belly weighted swimbait hooks Probably be Houdini, Sungill or White Trash Kalin 5 inch Lunker Grubs on BPS Perfect Finesse Worm jigheads and my color would be Bluegill or Watermelon seed /red flake. 1/2 ounce Dirty Jigs swimjig in Dill Gill and a Rage tail grub or a Rage Tail dual tail menace grub. I cab cover a lot of water with those baits. If I had a choice of a forth it would be a spinnerbait.
  17. Anglers Express is the only Dobyns dealer for about 4 or 5 states. Eric is building a good store. He is located on Old Padonia Rd, which is one block north of Padonia Rd off 83 South. That is about a 1 hour run for you. I used to live just north of Duncannon so I sorta know your area. He usually has at least a half dozen Sierras, lots of Fury, some Champions as well. Call and be sure what he has in the spinning in stock. He just received a huge order of Dobyns about 3 weeks ago and many of them have been sold already. Heck between my friend and I we lowered his inventory by a total 5 rods just ourselves. If I sell enough at the local fishing flea market I intend to reduce his inventory by a few more. What is great is if he does not have it in stock at that moment you can ask him to bring in say 1or 2 Sierras and a Champ to decide between and he will get them in. If you call tell him Bob Rampolla sent you. I have sent him a bunch of business. That's okay since he takes good care of me. So far I have purchased one Ike rod, some Dobyns rods and a couple of Irods from him. It is a dark and dangerous place to go in, but I have a calling for those dark places!
  18. If you do not mind a trip, come down Route 83 to Hunt Valley. There is a local shop, sorta like Susquehanna Fishing Tackle. This shop carries Dobyns in stock. Look up Anglers Express. They are located about 2 exits before you would run into the 695 Baltimore Beltway. He stocks Powell, Dobyns Duckett and plenty more. You will be amazed at how well stocked his shop is and it has only been in business for just over a year. Give him a call at Call us now: (844) 204-FISH (3474).
  19. That Sierra SA693F is going to be one of the next rods I get my wife. She is going to use it for Sencos, small tx rigs, tubes grubs etc. I then plan on getting a Champ 705 spinning rod for her to throw frogs and big jigs. You will find the Sierra a bit slower graphite than the Champ. If you are throwing mostly bottom feely type baits jump to the Champion. The difference is not very big, but the Champs are a little more sensitive and react quicker on the hook set.
  20. Since you are used to FireLine you could do what i do. On all of my spinning gear I run 14 pound FireLine. I then tie on 4 feet of P Line CXX in 8 or 10 pound test. I have used that setup in tanc colored tidal water, and deep clear lakes out in TN an KY. That CXX 10 pound line works fine using a double uni knot. The FireLine is .009 in diameter and is the same size diameter as 6 pound Trilene XT. The P Line CXX moss green copolymer line in 10 pound is .014 and breaks at 23 pounds, the 8 pound is .012 and breaks close to 16 pounds. The other option is to use Suffix 832 in the 20 pound and again match it with say the P LIne CXX in 8 pound test moss green (moss green CXX has tested stronger than their other cxx lines, no idea why) I have that combo on two of my baitcasters. I like 832 except for frogging and pitching/punching. In heavy vegetation I prefer Power Pro, that stuff cuts like a weed eater.
  21. Yes the T wing does work, and yes the T wing grooving has been addressed in both the Tatula 100 series ( both regular and Type Rs) and in the smaller sized CT reels ( again in all versions) The difference in actual body size is not that much. I fish 1 Daiwa Exceler, 4 Tatula Type Rs and 2 Tat CTs. I have bigger hands so I like the size of the regular 100 reel as well as the CT sized reels. If you like the size of a Shimano Chronarch 200 series reels, and the Curados, then I think you would like the CT reels best. The Type Rs have 1 more cr bearing than a regular series reel, a bit lighter spool and weigh just a little less. I could not tell you much difference in real life. If you are a tinkerer with reels, I am told that you can soup them up to throw lighter baits by replacing the spool bearings with ZR bearings and changing out the line guide bushings with bearings. I am told that by adding 2 more handle knobs bearings instead of the two bushings helps make it feel sweeter. Me I just pull the reel from the box and go fish. I purchased my first Tatula and then sold off my Curados and Chronarchs. Take a look at this video and it will explain a lot about the Magforce Z system which is the "magic" in these reels. The SV is expected to be able to handle lighter weight baits and sip better.
  22. Glad the found the problem. That should be a good motor for you. Make sure to pick up some fuel treatment before filling it up. I have been using the Star Tron since my boat was new. Even if you are able to avoid ethanol fuel, there is no way guarantee how fresh the fuel we get is.
  23. NADA is a nice gauge but condition and the extras all play into, heck he just spent $1200 on a mechanic going over it. You get new batteries, a complete engine check up, a trailer check up along with new tires and rims and a boat that is babied. If that boat is the kinda boat you want, I would go ahead and get it. The price of a boat is only decided by what a buyer and seller can agree to not what some book says. If you have cash jump on it. If not, finance it with a personal loan not a boat loan. Most banks won't finance a boat that old.
  24. Pay attention to inches per turn on reels when you compare them. It tells more than gear ration. If you compare a Tatula CT 6.3-1. It has a retrieve rating of 26.3 inches of line recovered per 1 handle turn. A Lews Speed Spool LFS is offered in a 6.8-1 ratio and it rates a 28 inches recovered. That is only 1.7 inches more. A Tatula CT in the a 7.3-1 recovers 30 inches I guess you just have to make a decision what will work best for you, I picked those two reels to compare because they are priced about the same.
  25. If you were comfortable with a 7-1 than get that. Lots of the pros never go below that except for fishing BIG DEEP cranks. Most of us do not throw baits that dig 22 foot deep all day.
