  1. Kinda think of it this way.If I was setting up a 5'6" to 6 foot ultra light combo then I would pick a 6920 or 6925. These are fine for chasing trout with small lures or for going after panfish. All of the President reels my wife and I own are on medium light and medium bass rods. We have a couple of 6930 and 4 6935 reels. The 6930 is just a tad smaller than the 6935 and balances a little nicer on our 6 foot G Loomis SJR 721 rods. These are only 6 footers but fish awesome, so we continue to use them. The 6935 is my preference on some of our longer rods because they balance on them so well. Many anglers would stick with the 6930 and that is fine. I fish for bass as well as stripers and often hook up with BIG blue cats where we fish so I like the extra line. Lets talk line. The 6930 suggest a max of 145 yards of 6 pound mono. The 6935 lists 185 yards of 8 pound mono. These are plenty for most situations. If you wished to go up from 6 pound test to 8 pound test there would be no problem, you would just spool a little less line, still no problem. I would not suggest spooling say 14 pound test mono on a 6930. It would not work well. For me I do the following. I spool half my reel with 12 pound Stren mono first, then I spool 14 pound Berkley FireLine braid ( 6 pound mono diameter) the rest of the way. I prefer to fish with the small diameter braid and in clear water I add a 5 foot mono or copolymer leader. My leader is usually 8 pound test. This setup does two things. I cut the cost of spooling up all of my reels since I only need to replace 1/2 of a spool per reel when it is time. The braid is much more sensitive and I like the way FireLine casts and retrieves. Very rarely do I have to contend with any line twists or birds nests. Paul G I am curious how they get to the $39.98? Is that the $49.97 (sale price) + the $10 rebate? If so I always do the two trip approach. Trip one I buy a jig, go home and fill out my customer survey and return with my printed $10 off coupon. I have saved some money over time using those customer surveys.
  2. I love the Dobyns stuff. If you go with a Tatula CT you will spend around $100 online. You could upgrade from the Dobyns Fury to a Dobyns Sierra model SA 733C or 734C. The blank and components are upgraded over the Fury. The Fury rods run $110 and the Sierras run around $180. That combo would run $280 complete. The choice is yours both combos will play really well.
  3. I would look at the following: Powell Max 3D 683CEF, or a Max 3D 723CEF, both are nice sticks. Dobyns Champion XP ( will run $260) either a 734C or 744C Dobyns Sierra (runs $160) SA 734C Irod Genesis II models IRG 704C and IRG 744C Both run $150 These are all nice rods for what you want to do.
  4. Bass Pro did not sell any for a few years. I guess Johnny did not want to pay Daiwas price. They do sell some online now. The stores have been pushing the BPS models as well as a few Browning ( another house brand) and a few Abus mostly. There have been a few Shimanos in stock in some of the stores but not many. Remember Johnny has been trying to purchase Cabelas and so much of his money is ear marked for that I am sure. Cabelas does carry more of the Daiwas, Shimanos and even Pfluegers.
  5. Just respool. I like to start with a half of my spool loaded with Stren Clear Blue mono in 14 pound test. Now you can buy a 150 yard spool of braid and get ti to fill two reels. If you end up like you are now you can add a new half a spool of braid and you are ready to go.
  6. I know a professional angler on the FLW tour who had a few under 6 foot rods custom made to put his custom Pop R style baits way under docks. i watched him send that bait way under some docks in a boat house and was amazed the distance and accuracy he had developed with them. I also watched as he caught the 5 pound bass he had wanted ME to catch, but I have to admit I could not reach that fish myself. It ws fun to watch the master though.
  7. I just saw this today. Dicks sells the Pflueger President spinning reels for $59.99 normally. They have them on sale for $49.99 right now plus Pflueger has a $10 rebate going on right now. Dicks has that listed on their website right now too, so they should have the forms printable online and on paper in the stores. Using the rebate makes the reel cost $39.99 Anytime you go in a Dicks store and buy anything there is a customer survey mentioned on the back of the receipt. The person behind the register is supposed to mention it to you. I always go in the store and buy a Jawbone brand jig for like $3.00. I use them to fish with and as a casting plug. I also use that receipt to go online and fill out that survey. I then print out the $10 off coupon that the survey gives as a thank you. By doing this, that $59.99 reel would end up costing you $29.99 right now. Not bad for a very reliable spinning reel. If you have an old reel that has seen better days, or you are thinking about a new setup this should help keep the cost down and still give you a 9 ball bearing reel.
  8. First I love the lightest Suffix 832 braid I use it on a special combo I set up to troll for white perch and walleye. It has a line counter reel and 10 pound 832 which is the same diameter as 4 pound mono. That stuff plays nice. As for a second rod go to Wal Mart and look for a Berkley Lightning Shock. The have a 6'6' Medium and some of the stores have them on an unmarked clearance. Take the rod to the counter for a price check. Members here have purchased them for less than $15 dollars. Next Go to Dicks Sporting Goods. Purchase anything cheap. Maybe a pack of gum, a single jig, or maybe some fishing line. Go Home and go online. Answer the customer survey online, at the end you will be able to print a $10 coupon to use on a reel. They have the Pflueger President on sale right now. It usually sells for $59.99. It is now on sale for $49.99. Using your $10 off coupon it is going to cost you $39.99. Wait it gets better. Pflueger has a $10 rebate on right now and Dicks is listing that on the website.
  9. My wifes frog setup is a 7 foot Dobyns heavy spinning rod and a Pflueger Supreme rel. That thing is buttery smooth and feel sway better than the Shimano we bought her for her jig setup, and it cost more than the Supreme. We also fish 6 Presidents, some old some less than 2 years old. They all perform awesome. We went with the Supreme only because of the faster gear ratio.
  10. I think you mean their Neon I use it all the time. I use 14 pound FireLine in the neon flame on all of my spinning reels. No problem. I also use a 5 foot leader on most of them too. My leader is usually P Line CXX in 8 pound test.
  11. I would call G Loomis and ask them
  12. new2BC4bass if you want the distance you need to loosen that reel up. Add just a touch of side play to the spool and trust the reel to do its job. All of the Tat line is that way. The Tatulas do not adjust like any other reel on the market period!
  13. Here are some specific options. Look at a Dobyns Fury FR 806SB for $120. A serious step up would be anu of the Dobyns Champion XP series swimbait rods. These run around $260. Look at an Irod Genesis swimbait rods There are 3 or 4. These run around $150. Both of these brands are really nice throughout the lineups. I can not help any further as this is not one of the tools in my tool box. I just never fished them. I have fished rods from each brand though. I love my Champion XP rods and my two Irod Genesis II rods
  14. There is a very easy way to cut down on the cost of braid. I use Stren 14 pound mono to half fill all my reels. This way a regular 150 yard spool will fill two reels. If you look at Tackle Warehouse Power Pro Spectra Moss Green 30 pound braid costs $15.00. A spool of Stren clear blue original sact $8 for a 330 yard spool. If you use 75 yards of Stren that costs less than 3 cents a yard and you only need about half the spool of braid to fill your reel up the rest of the way with the braid. 75 yards of braid is plenty on most reels and the backing can be used over and over as the braid needs replacement in several years. That is how I save money on my 12 baitcasters and 4 spinning combos.
  15. David I had nothing to do with this addiction of yours. That is my story and I am sticking to it! BUT you did put a nice arsenal together brother!
  16. That is a great price on the Shimano for sure.
  17. The Tatula CT I have on my Champion XP DC705C works great and would fit your needs well. That would save you a bunch of money.
  18. My wife and I use the old bobber and worms for panfish often. Try several things to try. First we use the inexpensive pencil style bobbers. We go thru the bobber then to a swivel. We use a short leadr maybe 12 to 16 inches and then the hook. I add a few pinch on weights on the leader. I try to keep the leader relatively short so I am able to adjust the depth with the bobber on the main line. Walmart sells some from South Bend for like $1.98 that work good. Wing it makes some nice ones too. These are cheap and work well. I like the black colored swivels to keep line twist down. A light sidearm lob should help too. We own 2 5 1/2 ultralights that we use for bluegill, crappie and white perch. It usually does not take long to get a mess of them for dinner. As for setting up a slip bobber setup check out this video.
  19. Going by slonezp's boat rating is probably the best idea. Those boats probably did not have the design and floatation a more modern boat would have. Also remember those were 2 strokes back then not 4 strokes, so I doubt it would weigh as much as a modern 4 stroke would. I would probably look at a 9.9 2 stroke
  20. A friend of mine wrote a terrific article about finding the right used boat. As you read this understand he is in love with the 90s Rangers for lots of good reasons. Regardless, he has captured much of the info you will not have yet. This is a pretty comprehensive read so sit back with a cup of your favorite beverage and enjoy. I Have owned 11 boats in the past myself so if any questions pop up feel free to PM me. Enjoy the read! Here is the link: http://www.baybass.com/node/200 Oh and welcome to the site.
  21. I have never fished that one, but I absolutely love my IRG703CC. It is one of my main rods I use for small to mid size cranks, squarebills, and traps. Works exactly as the factory told me it would. I use it for both bass and salt water stripers here on the Chesapeake Bay. Forget the spec but if the factory said it will handle the task you want it for I would tend to believe them. One thing I know money makes the final decision often, but if you can step up to the Genesis II series I think I would. I prefer the feel and components on the Genesis II, but it is your money! I do not think there is a bad decision here either way.
  22. Most kayak anglers seem to prefer shorter rods so are you sure a really long rod will not be difficult to fish with?
  23. If you are going to set a new Tatula up like your "other " reels. SAVE YOUR MONEY. YOU WILL NOT BE HAPPY!!!! MagForce Z brakes DO NOT work like every other reel. That is because you can not adjust the centrifugal component of the weights and springs. They are specifically designed to automatically alter the force of the magnets upon the inductor. That inductor is directly attached to the spool. It is the inductor moving within the magnetic field that helps control the initial speed up of the spool. The spool needs to be loose enough to gain speed quickly in order to get the distance, without getting ahead of the line being pulled out by the weight of your lure. This is one source of a backlash. It is also why it sounds backwards, but you get more backlashes with Tatulas if you run them without the side play. Run them loose and let the inductor do its job. Once the lure gets out towards the end of the cast the momentum is slowing down the weights are moved back in by the spring tension. Now the control is being handled by whatever you set the external brake adjustment dial to. These are very different animals than any other designed reel out there. Other members have already mentioned that the reels respond best with a much less aggressive casting motion. Try being softer and smoother and distance will improve. It is a feel thing of course. My friend with his MGL was amazed how differently he needed to setup his Shimano reel than my Tatula CT. Setup wrong and each was a casting nightmare. Set them up correctly and each one was a joy to cast! He also was amazed how different the best casting motion was for each combo. We could have exchanged reels on our rods and it would be exactly the same results.
  24. How much for the anchor and a paddle? The one near Harrisburg did include those for $375. Just saying.
