  1. I remember when a 12' johnny was all I had. I mounted swivel seats, a depth finder, got a 24 lb thrust trolling motor, throwable cushion, portable lights, and a paddle. I managed to catch just as many fish as I do now in my Javelin. Some things to remember when you're in a johnny; Dont skimp on your battery. Bite the bullet and get the higher amps. Know the weather. On windy days, make your first run into the wind. That way you have the wind at your back in case you experience propulsion problems or need to leave quickly Carry a weather band radio or have an iphone app Stay off the big water or at least traverse the shore while enroute on big water. Huge roller waves can swamp a johnny easily. Stow a anchor/rope and some kind of hand bailer. I dont know how many times I was able to anchor down upwind from a ledge or brush pile and stay put while I caught fish in sustained winds. Old window weights on a rope will hold a john boat quite easily and are easily stowed. Another "bonus" from using trolling motor power w/ depth finder is that you'll discover structure that may otherwise get missed, while enroute to other spots on the lake.
  2. Do they make them in black or does he dye his own?
  3. Hit Norman again this morning around 7:30. Fished up the lake near the state park. Caught a good spot (2.37) on a fluke early then switched to t rigs as the sun got up good We got 8 today, some shallow, others off docks. Water temps 69-70. Cruised into the bank to get un-hung and saw a school of about 8-10 spots cruising the bank. Saw some bass busting shad too. Good times.
  4. You can say that again
  5. You da man, buzz!
  6. Ok, I am one of those people who does some things left handed and other things right handed. For example, I write, shoot, and eat left handed. I throw, hit, and cast right handed. I can drive a nail with either. But I would definitely say my right hand is dominant. I use a right handed bait caster, but a left handed spinning reel. Sincerely, Mixed Up in Mooresville
  7. Sadly, lo n slo opened the thread thinking it was gonna be.....never mind.
  8. The shallow bite was good this morning on Norman. Lake not quite full yet but it was full enough. Temps down to 69-70 degrees. Caught some good ones early on secondary points and later off docks. Cooler temps kept many boaters away from the lake. That was awesome. Carolina Bassin - I would like to know what you found at Tillery. We're thinking about heading down there, or Badin next week.
  9. My local Walmart carries some items that I use alot, Gamakatsu hooks in the 25 pack, Seaguar line, Spike it, limited Zoom and Berkley plastics, Startron, and Quicksilver synthetic blend oil. They're usually cheaper than BPS and Gander Mountain. I'll use my Christmas BPS gift cards on the March Madness sale and then buy in bulk. BPS is a half hour from the house, a new Cabela's south of Charlotte, but that stretch of I 77 is brutal.
  10. We'll hit Norman in the morning. Last time out there was before all the rain and the lake was still way down, 73-74 degree surface temps. Got my hopes up for an improved bite.
  11. I thought I'd dig this old thread up in light of the recent heavy rains across this region. All of the Catawba chain lakes in NC have been restored to near full pool/above full pool levels in the last two weeks. Norman has risen from nearly -6.5' to -2.7' as of this morning. I did see where all ramps on Wylie are now open. How about the rest of you Catawba boys?
  12. Halloween
  13. All I wanna do is a Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, and a boom-boom!
  14. I knew a guy who'd spit his 'backer juice on his worms
  15. Not that I know of. I use the kind with the little removable cylinder and string.
  16. Seen it. I think it's the wind.
  17. LOL
  18. I laughed
  19. Fishing with a friend of mine nearly 30 years ago. I had a small john boat then. We were fishing a small cove that featured a row of large stmps along the ridge of a drop off. He was throwing some kinda crank bait and hooked a good bass. A d**n good bass. After a short run the beast came to the surface, right beside the boat, and pitched his crank bait into the boat with us. It tore him up, so much that the next day he launched his bow rider, without a trolloing motor, and tried in vain to hook that bass again. It was a sad sight to behold.
  20. What's up!
  21. Here's hoping that you guys get some major relief soon.
