congratulations on your jon boat project. you can get a decent sonar for a hundred bucks or so. i have two Garmin Striker 4 units on my little johnny. well worth the money too. so many features, including battery voltage, water temp, and way point capability ?
for me, my choice of lures and methods are basically still the same, but here is my list.

the internet (and smart devices, such as, weather radar and Hank Williams radio on my phone!!!)
i use the chunks. i soak them for a couple hours minimum and place them on the coals when i place the meat in the smoker (and as needed if i’m doing a butt). not during the pre heat.
first, i’m a big fan of coach Orgeron and LSU. but to be honest, UCF lost their all-world starting QB near the end of the season. maybe the outcome would have been the same had he played, maybe not. i’ll cut them a little slack.
i’ve been retired from the city water works 8 years as of today! i remember when i had 5 years left. i thought it would never get here. where does the time go?
