  1. I use a leader that is about 6 inches shorter than the rod I am using. When it gets down to about 2 feet, I change it.
  2. When it come to distance in the Daiwa line up, I have the Steez SV TWS and it does cast pretty far but my Shimano Antares 70A cast the farthest out of any reel I have used. All of this depends on what rod and what lure you're using. Also, I have come to the conclusion that casting distance doesn't always equal out to making one reel better than another.
  3. Another vote for the Shimano Bantam. Solid, smooth, and easy to cast.
  4. I usually watch his videos and somehow missed this one. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. After watching it though, it's quite eyeopening. The Limited really looks like the same reel. It's a shame Daiwa would do this, especially on a reel that appears to be geared towards fans of the Steez (kind of like me). In a way, having worked in printing and marketing for many years, it reminds me that you can charge more for anything that is chrome plated.
  5. Good video and info. They look awesome...
  6. I would say clear but would prefer FC for that type of water.
  7. My first was a BPS Rick Clunn reel from about 15-20 years ago. Didn't really care for it.
  8. I through tubes on 12lb but in the past most of guys I use to fish with, fished for small mouth. To them tubes were used on spinning gear with 6 or 8lb FC.
  9. In spinning rods I use a ML for inline spinner baits and live bait for crappie and for a Med. I use it for 4in Senkos, Ned Rig, 1/8oz jig head with a trick worm/finesse soft plastic and tubes.
  10. For big cranks and small swimbaits I use a Shimano Calcutta 251, for square bills and medium divers I have a Antares 12, deep divers I use a Abu Garcia Winch, and for lipless cranks a Quantum Vapor.
  11. 1. Senko 5in Black Blue Flake or Green Pumpkin 2. Zoom Ole Monster 10.5in Junebug 3. Strike King Anaconda 4. Roboworm 6in Aaron's Magic 5. Strike King Cut R Worm 6in Summer Craw
  12. Agreed. This is what has stopped me from getting a BFS set up. It seems we (anglers) want to increase the challenge of bringing in a fish to make the reward just that much better. I often thought this is what fly fisherman go through. I could catch a dozen smallmouth in creek but a fly fisherman will spend all day catching one or two. Sometimes, it's in the art of the catch rather than the quantity.
  13. You will probably put a small ding in it at some point. I say fish it and enjoy.
  14. Lately I have been using either a 7' M or MH fast. I have tried moderate and x fast rods and fast seems to be the sweet spot for me.
  15. I have a bulk spool of Yozuri Hybrid that is about 12 years old. I use it for backing but it still seems like it's good stuff.
  16. Finally got my Mojo Yak rod. It has a much softer tip than most rods and I like the feel of the handle. I had fished one in the past (barrowed) thought it was weird but for a kayak it will be just right, I hope.
  17. I have had those tags get me twice. Once at BPS in Louisville KY> they cracked a G. Loomis IMX 844C removing the tag. I then had issues having them exchange it, even though I just bought it and it was their fault. The manager said that they can't be responsible for accidents after it's paid for. They did eventually give in but what a pain that I will never forget. Second was at DSG> I bought a Shimano Curado that had a tag on the handle that was looped through the frame. Long story, they broke the AR clutch trying to take it off. They were nice about it and had a new shipped to my house.
  18. Welcome to the forum..... It would help if we had a price point. You could get opinions from $150 to over $1000. My recommendations at various price points...... Shimano SLX 7.X:1 and a SLX 7'2'' MH Fast > around $150 at A.L.F. Shimano Curado K 7.X:1 and a St. Croix Avid 7' MH Fast > around $400 Daiwa Steez SV TWS and a G. Loomis 7' 844C GLX> around $950 There are ton more choices. The three I picked will do the job of more than just jigs. I also wanted to show how rods and reels can easily go from one price point to another quickly. Good luck....
  19. I would think you would be ok with senkos and light spinnerbaits but frogs, to me, is bait casting setup lure, usually with 12-15lb mono or 40-50lb braid and Heavy rod. My do all set up for spinning gear is a St. Croix Avid MH Fast with a Shimano Stradic FI and 6lb FC.
  20. I wouldn't think so. I have the Steez SV TWS and it is a different reel than than one you asked but I didn't like it for deep cranks. It tends to flex a little when under load and with deep cranks. It just felt weird. If the A is anything like that I would pass especially on something that is 2+oz. My personal preference for deep cranks is either a Shimano Antares 12 or a Shimano Calcutta. You would think you would need something more stoat for such a big lure.
  21. Armilo will be more like Abrazx (kind of). Regular Defier is something special for crankbaits. Armilo so far (first spool last year) has worked well for me with swimbaits and heavy jigs.
  22. I like Abrazx but it would be one last choices for crankbaits. I like it for jigs and some softplastic. To me, it works best around structure and rocks. For crankbait fishing, I like Sunline Defier and Invizx for deep cranks. Not to jump on the band wagon about this...... I believe that mono and copolymer when lit with a match will burn but fluorocarbon will not. It's an easy way to tell if you bought some fake FC.... Just tested some Abrazx and CXX> CXX smoked and burned, Abrazx did not.
  23. G. Loomis 783C GLX and a Shimano Core 101MG. It has done it all for me the last 15 years.
  24. St. Croix Avid 6'8'' M Fast. You can use it for more than just light topwater.
  25. Try rotating it back to open and take the spool out and then put the spool back in.
