Hi Larry,
I've fished Burt Lake a few times a year (various times of year May-Sept) going back 7 or 8 years. My wife's family has a place in Maple Bay. We will be there for about a week right after you leave.
Lund Explorer's advice sounds about right to me. We don't have a real fishing boat and just make do with a small speedboat which limits us quite a bit. It gets really rough out there when it's windy. The lake has very little cover/structure, but when you find the right spot you can do well. I've had great days and lots of skunked days on Burt. At various times we've caught smallmouth on soft plastic stickbaits (3inch variety), crankbaits, rapala husky jerks, nightcrawlers and tubes.
Location is going to be your biggest problem as the lake is huge. Look for any structure or cover you can find, and use a method you feel confident in. There are some big ones in there!
If you're interested I can get really specific about where/when/how we've caught fish, but I don't feel like giving away all my experience to the internet and writing a novel here. Send me a message if you want to know more. I'd really like to hear how it goes because I will be there right after you leave.
Here is a picture of maybe the biggest smallmouth I've caught at Burt, it was a little over 20 inches and caught early July 2010. I do have more recent pictures but I couldn't easily find them.
