  1. I’ve found with top water lures the “ hook set” isn’t really as important as a hesitation before. For me it was hard to learn. You see the blow up and want to jerk the rod and reel like crazy. Hesitate for 1-2 seconds(especially since your using braid) then a sweeping hook set not a big tv show jerking of the rod. With braid you could be pulling the lure out all the way back to the kayak. Remember braid does not stretch at all. Don’t get too aggressive. Sometimes they just short strike all day and you did everything right.
  2. Waiting for reviews on tour pro before I jump in too
  3. Keep in mind that in this ethanol mix world not everything is as it seems. Just some points I would like to bring up being in the trucking industry. 1) Gas station volume is more important than ethanol free gas. Just because it’s “ethanol free” doesn’t mean it’s great for your motor. If the station only sells it for recreational use, the volume is way down and the gas is old gas. Old gas collects moisture too and some summer additives are just as harmful as ethanol when unused. 2) “Ethanol free” gas is delivered in a tanker that may or may not have delivered ethanol gas. In other words it may still have some ethanol in it. They don’t wash out gasoline tankers between loads. Treat all gas with an additive as if it has ethanol. 3) A lot of “ethanol free” gas is much higher in octane. This causes your motor to run hotter than normal and ignite in the cylinder faster. This could cause a timing issue or other problems. Make sure your motor can run on premium or higher if that is what’s available in “ethanol free”.
  4. Evinrude did not “bite the dust”. read the press release. They are no longer manufacturing Outboard motors. We can debate the reasoning on that decision for ever. Marketing has always been Evinrude’s downfall. The Evinrude name sake will live on. BRP, which is a big innovator in the outdoor sports arena, has decided to build boats with on-board motors. These motors are called Ghost and will have the Evinrude name. The Sturtevant facilities are being re-tooled to make these new engines. These new concept motors allow complete use of all deck space. BRP also released a statement that warranties will be honored, parts will still be made, and dealers will still be supported for G1andG2 motors.
  5. Location of the SI transducer depends on how you fish. I do my searching of new areas standing at the bow and casting a spinnerbait, swimjig, crank, or chatter bait. Watching my SI the entire time. some guys like to run, gun and idle with the big motor. figure out what works for you
  6. I have started buying used electronics on EBay. HB 998 si $500 HB 798 si $400 2 HB 799 si $1000 all came with transducerS and a network box. these were $4300 new buy electronics from the guys who have to upgrade all the time.
  7. First off if this is in the wrong category, I apologize. I am deciding on a new troller for my aluminum Triton TX18. I currently have a terrova 55#. It has served me well for 8 years 90% of the time. BUT, 3 replaced foot pedals, anew hand remote almost every year, and a spot lock that is just ok, has me looking at the new motorguide tour pro instead of the Ultrex. 2 main reasons Its a true cable driven motor. So if the electronics fail I can finish out the very short Wisconsin fishing season with just the cable motor. I like the idea of NO internal transducer. It gives me the opportunity to switch brands without having to replace the troller. I’m currently an HB rigged boat, but the Garmin line of products seem better to me right now, should I choose to switch in the future. Plus the ease that a true cable drive gives you at rigging external transducers. I know this motor isn’t really out there yet, but wandered if any tourney guys that may have gotten them early can leave a review. There is virtually nothing online yet. Or any ones thoughts too. thanks much
  8. This is why I take one or two home for dinner. Catch and release for good hook ups. Catch and grease for bad hook ups.
  9. Triton TX18. Same hull as Ranger but much better looking dash. Trailer is all welded not bolted on wench like Ranger.
  10. You will almost always find them co_mingling. Especially in spring. Blue Gill eat bass eggs and vice versa. Bass will be around big time during blue gill hatch. It's not till fall that they separate, when bass go on the feed. Blue Gill will school to protect them selves and bass will hang around picking off the week ones. Find the bluegill and a majority if the time you will catch some bass.
  11. BUZZBAIT My PB 6# LM came on a Buzz bait just after the rain stopped.
  12. Why would I Google what I know from personal experience?
  13. I'm convinced there is a wife club that monitors our every post.
  14. Although I will take a bass or two home for dinner. The one that always gets me is "Why did you throw a fish that big back"?
  15. Using fluoro as a leader is a good idea. Best knot is Double Surgeon. Google it. I use flouro on all my bait casters. It's stiffer than mono so it casts better. Has less stretch, more sensitivity, better abrasion resistance, better strength(if you tie it properly)(google uni knot), almost invisible in clear water. I even use Vicious, which most people abhor. Works great for me and it's cost effective. What's not to like
  16. "It won't happen to me" has killed or injured many people.
  17. Lower at the ramp to drain. Leave it stored in motor bracket, as long as angle isn't to steep. Letting hydraulic hold up motor isn't good for it.
  18. 115 Yamaha 175 - 150 Etec HO 200 - Optimax or Etec it's a toss up. I know you said Mercury but every manufacturer has their strengh.
  19. I would rate them in the average overall performance range. SS is really the way to go to get the best performance out of any outboard. A Prop is like tires on your car. Wal-Mart tires work but Michelin's give you a great ride.
