Twitter is fantastic for staying up to date on anything. I follow sports writers from my favorite teams. I also follow certain fishing shows and people who share tips. Most times you'll see news posted on Twitter before you'll see it anywhere else.
I myself love the Pflueger brand for spinning reels. I don't get as worked up about rods but I really liked the Berkley Shock Lightning rod.
What is your price range? I was able to get a Pflueger Summit reel and Cabelas rod combo for only $49 on Cabelas.com last week. Pretty hard to beat that price.
I've had a spinning rod for two years now and loved it until the tip broke last Friday. It got stepped on. I was upset I broke it but not too bad since I knew I didn't spend a fortune on it. I recommend it.
I bought a Pflueger President two years ago based on reviews and price. It's been my favorite reel. I have it paired up with a 7' Berkley Shock Lightning rod. Best combo I've ever had.
If you do a variety of fishing I think it's smart to have a variety of setups. I currently have two spinning setups and one baitcast. I just ordered another spinning combo and baitcast combo from Cabelas two days ago. It's nice to have the options.
Check out Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop for some of their combo deals. I just ordered a spinning combo and a baitcast combo for a total of $130. Figured I'd get two for the price of one. I've only used one baitcast reel so I don't know a lot about them but the one I just ordered is a Lews.
I currently have a Pflueger President spinning reel on a Berkley Shock Lightning rod and it's my favorite. The spinning combo I ordered from Cabelas is their Pflueger Summit reel on a Cabelas rod on sale for only $49. You can't go wrong with a combo for the price.
