  1. Not specific to this lake, but anytime I fish a new body of water I start off with a senko. You know its going to catch fish. Once you've caught a few on it figure out where they are, what color they like, how they want it presented. Then model your other baits off of what the bass tell you. If they like a white senko in the shallows, try out a weedless rigged super fluke. If they like a junebug senko on drop offs and brush piles, try throwing a black and blue jig... ETC... Whether it be a senko or something else, start fishing it with confidence baits, then let the fish tell you what they want. (Especially topwater hehehe) Hope this helps! Tight lines!
  2. You know what they say man... big girls need love too! Ive been known to kiss a fish every now and then, and I'm not ashamed in the slightest way.
  3. They are starting to come up a little bit here in central va! What has been working: Catching dinks in the shallows on flukes and baby bass senkos (weightless rigged), Jerkbaits at the Dam on the rocks, swimming a jig, TRAP What hasnt been working: spinnerbaits (i dont know how they want the spinnerbait right now but they arent pickin up what im puttin down) Caught about a half dozen in the last 2 weeks... but im particularly proud of this fish. It was about 4.5 pounds, and the reason im proud of it is because the second i made my cast i knew i was gonna get bit. I pulled up to a main lake point just outside of the mother of all coves (spawning flat central), 10 ft. of water, open area in between stump nation, made a cast towards the sunny bank, hack attack 3/8th oz. swim jig in bluegill with rxn innovations skinny dipper (watermelon red flake), I dead sticked it, then slow rolled it for about 2 seconds before It got freakin SMOKED! Tight lines everyone! And to all of us paddlers out there, stay safe and keep it tight! It might be nice up top, but not down in the drink! Cumon! *** Click on the picture to blow it up its kind of small as a thumbnail
  4. "Faster than a taco bell dinner combo" - aint that the truth. Good write up! I think its cool that you were able to get your worm back!
  5. Awesome report. The real question is... what didnt you throw? Sounds like you went through a whole tackle store to figure out what was working, and im not making fun, I do the same thing. I was just down in your area for a week or so... we werent very productive with largemouth but we slayed the peacocks. Im very jealous of where you live!
  6. Looks like weve got a fish kisser over here! Congrats on the PB! Always a good feeling. Set goals and then watch them swim away.
  7. Ill tell you what man, I've caught many species in my life on many incredible waters... and the Peacocks definitlely make top 3 favorite catches. The best way I can describe it is that pound for pound they fight much harder than largies: A two pound peacock puts up a fight comparable to a 3-4 pound largmouth, and more erratic. The peacocks are super decisive when it comes to what baits they hit and how they chase/follow the bait. but once they are on its game time. When they are out of the water they shake the whole time and rarely settle down to take a picture. (you can keep them out for a lot longer) If you notice in my footage, the release shots are always really quick because they just take off.
  8. I use a gopro with various mounts on my buddies boats, my canoe, and handheld poles for underwater shots. You kind of just have to take your camera with you and find what works for you. I get really inspired by just exploring youtube and taking ideas from there.
  9. I anchor up the canoe, fan cast for 10 minutes then pull up anchor, cuss at the wind, move spots and try again. I fought wind all day yesterday on Briery Creek Lake VA.
  10. We were out on our own for the first day from shore. Then we fished with 2 different guides. Capt. Craig Korzynski for snook, and on Okee. And Capt. Mark Hall in miami for the peacocks. Both were recommendations by our good friend Ernie. We had an excellent experience with both guides.
  11. I have a St. Croix hat that has seen alot of action. Mainly I just make sure never to leave without some sort of soft plastic in junebug or christmas color. I always seem to have a bad day when I dont at least have it as an option to throw. Additionaly, I beleive that the difference between a good angler and a great angler, is that the great one creates his own luck.
  12. I am part of the fishing club here at Longwood University in VA. I understand the difficulties of having a fishing club being that it can possibly fall into a few different categories. Some schools (such as larger universities that compete on a national level, FLW, etc..) have funded teams that are official in every regard and offer scholarships and funds for equipment/boats etc... Then you have clubs that are merely a group of people who share the same interest of fishing and get together to fish and hang out. Our club falls somewhere in between and we are currently evolving into a more recreational club, and only a few of our anglers compete representing the school. What I suggest you do is figure out what your goals are for the club as far as the things you actually do together. Dont be afraid to start small and grow. I would caution you against going straight for competing FLW or similar tournaments. Perhaps start as an interest club and organize meeting to discuss fishing, plan trips (even if its just a group outing to local waters for a day), and plan club events and fundraising. Also, this might sound stupid, but I always find people who want to fish but dont know where to go since they moved to school! Talk to them and get them involved. Weve gained alot of interest and members just by randoms spotting me with my fishing gear or up at the lake, and I tell them to come check us out. Word of mouth is a powerful thing in college. Sometimes people are reluctant to get involved until you directly offer them a spot. We dont need anyone to have a bass fishing resume to fish with us. They ask me "What do I have to do to join?" and all I say is your in the club now! Meeting is this wednesday! We do things like Relay for Life, host small tournaments on local lakes, go to fishing shows and expos together, fish small tournaments, and we just fish together! It is a great thing to be a part of and we have alot more interest than expected. We try to be as welcoming to beginners as we can by getting them involved with helping at weigh ins, and car pooling to Bass Pro and the expos etc.. I hope this helps! Just remember that at the end of the day even if its not something huge, having a club that simply enjoys fishing together and hanging out is the way to start things. ***Also, I forgot to mention: Find the organization at your school that handles clubs/club sports and do it through them. Here at LU is is the Sports Club Council. So we have meetings with them for budget, community service, etc... We are at the same level as club baseball, rugby, equestrian, etc... any sports that arent NCAA. Most likely, that organization will welcome a new club and actually assist you by providing publicity through thier FB page and such. Hope this helps!
  13. Hey All, I have a 1996 Mohawk 14' Royalex. Its in great shape for its age with flipped and refinished seats, all new hardware, and protective treatment on inside and out. It is a blank canvas for me right now, I call her the Fishin' Unit! I fish around alot of standing timber and I am in a constant state of bump and grind with stumps, branches, and often times I have to put-in on sandy and rocky banks or boat ramps. Since I usually use the canoe out of a truck bed/back yard of buddies house, I do not have secure storage and I do not keep any gear in the unit. However, one thing I want to do to it before spring really kicks in is find a solution for abrasion resistance on the bottom of the hull (to combat stumps/sand) and extend its life in the long run. I know it is unconventional to paint or bed-line the bottom of a canoe (especially royalex), but it does have some minor sun damage and I can tell its already on its second coat of paint. Does anybody know of a reletively smooth paint or liner I can coat the bottom of it with (and re-apply as needed) to keep scratches off the hull and prevent futher sun damage from outdoor storage? Any input is welcome. I know I dont have pics up right now but I can get some soon. Also if this post is in the wrong section, mods feel free to re direct it as necessary. Thanks!
  14. My two cents: My father and I have always had good luck with Yamaha motors. (It may be an unpopular opinion haha) I agree with the above suggestion of getting everything on the motor checked out by a qualified mechanic. Also, before you even put it in the water, I would go ahead and do little odds and ends such as, servicing the lower unit, spark plugs, etc... just so you know they are done right. Good luck with everything!
  15. Great pics! That dock one dock looked like it might be better off as sunken fish structure though... I wonder what was up with that. Also, that white holographic jerkbait looked like money! That would be very effective here in VA. Good stuff.
  16. It truly is different for everyone. I started out pitching with my right and having to switch hands mid cast. (i still do for regular casting) I will say that the coffee mug across the living room trick really does work. Took countless hours, but I learned how to pitch left handed in my dorm room with music or TV on and I would pick a tile on the floor down the hall.
  17. Pleased to join yall! I go to school in Farmville, VA. If it has fins I fish for it, I love canoe fishing for largemouth in south central VA. I fish any tournament I can get my hands on at the moment until I am able to move my boat from MD to VA. I also fish online with the Virginia Bass League! Looking forward to diving into this wealth of information. -Bobby Rae
