  1. Caught this toothy critter on a skirted punchrig glad i got my tungsten back
  2. My question is why are you running around on the bank with a $300 rod. I own a boat and I don't have one $300 rod on the deck.
  3. Do yourself a favor and spool of with some braid learn some not so you can tie yourself a leader if you really want to. As far as the drag you don't need to be all scientific about it just feel it out with your hand and after you catch some fish just feel it out and get it set where you like it.
  4. For the average fisherman there's no reason not to use at least 50 lb braid what are you going to really get from 30 lb braid a micron less in diameter. Just tie on some 50lb braid and get yourself some 15 lb mono and just tie on a short shocker leader.
  5. Yes that sounds reasonable. A tin of grease and a grease gum would have been more reasonable. Have him go on you tube and watch some how to videos on the maintenance of the motor he has as well i imagine his motor oil and lower unit gear case lube also needs to be changed
  6. You need to bend the hooks up a bit from the body wait 2sec on the hook set trim the legs an inch or 2 and try a loop knot or put a large split ring in the line tie and tie on to that. Then just find a rhythm you can walk a frog with any gear it just takes time to find the right cadence. Walking a frog is key to getting better bites and it can be a pain to pick up anothet rod with a spook just to fish the edges and clean pockets.
  7. I've never broken a hook i find the major brands all sell good hooks that get the job done. I buy the trokar surgically sharpened flipping hooks for punching hevy cover because they do slice through the plastic easly. And i buy the eagle claw regular point flipping hooks when in using less than 3/4oz weight witch seems to prevent the hook from slicing the fished mouth and sliding out.
  8. Its just a reaction when they have a high activity level they hit a bait asap. I've noticed as the weather cools in the fall they like it lifted off the bottom and rarely hit it on the fall. For me of this usually happens when the water temperature drops below 60 degrees
  9. Have one friend that likes being on the back of the boat because he understands that boat control is an art and that there is plenty of clean water i cant fish on a pass. My other friend is a mess i cant even take him to fish docks because he hits them all the time casts into trees and the bank. Then constantly wants to move and fish for pike and walleye witch i cant stand. Always wants to go to a lake 2hrs away or the busy lake on a holiday. But i like the guy so i deal with it
  10. Try adding sime weight to your frog a couple sinkers in the body will help it sit lower in that mat and help you hook up
  11. If you are on a school of bass they generally school by size. So look for new schools with bigger fish. Some lakes only the smaller bass school and you should look for bigger individuals in cover rocks, docks, mats ect. If your are power fishing and getting rats then go to bigger more agressive baits.
  12. Yes probably better. You may need to update your 788c before your mapping will work so pick up a spare sd card just in case
  13. I bought a KK speed demon in apirl caught 5 fish on it and the reel seat broke on fish #6 a 3 lb bass. I called KK about the warranty and they said they would send me a shipping slip it never came. Also there spools are so small that there gear ratios are very deceiving. I would spend a little more for a abu or lews ar anything quality. Eazy to fish buzz baits on them and helps keep fish from swimming into hevy cover when frogging or flipping. Also increases your efficiency when punching or flipping for reaction strikes
  14. After reading this thread I am incredibly happy with my choice of boat the only thing I would have done differently is just bought units and power poles and trolling motor and finance it in instead of doing it one project at a time. I really wanted a bass boat because I do like the storage options but 50% of the time I have two Buddy's in the boat and having that side console and the ability to add seats and remove seats in the freedom of movement really pays off. And for a 16ft boat I feel so comfortable and confident in big water and even for a v Hull I can make it through the skinniest of water and you just know the hull is not going to warp or bend.
  15. In my opinion the maps are essential I'm sure there's lakes that aren't covered in both Navionics and Humminbird lakemaster but I don't see the point of having a unit and not having the maps the maps that are pre-loaded on Humminbird units have no contour lines. And for me the Contours are key in Saving Time on the water in pinpointing Prime locations to fish in Prime locations to graph
  16. This is my Theory on this subject as well. Where I grew up you pretty much have a spinning set up put in your hands from day one and they tend to just come left hand retrieve so when I stepped up to a baitcaster left hand just felt natural. And for the amount of flipping and pitching I do it seems to work well
  17. This didn't happen while I was fishing. But I work at a local Lake in my hometown where we have sailboat buoys which basically consists of a 1500 pound anchor a chain in the buoy on top. So I live in Minnesota and every fall we need to remove the buoys and every spring we put them back in we do this by attaching 12 gauge wire to each chain find the wire pull it off the bottom and in the chain comes up. After a long couple days of doing this job I was down to my last 10 buoys to put in was about a 15 mile an hour wind I'm pulling this wire and pull in this wire the chain comes up I go to grab it I don't really feel anything but a little pinch then the wind starts blowing the boat and my hand stays with the chain and I look down and I have a 6 ought treble hook in the palm of my hand all the way into the muscle that's some musky fisherman got snagged on. I ended up having to go to the doctor and having its lice out of my hand and three stitches in my palm
  18. The polarized finsh on the strike king classes will rub off after 3 months of fishing. I encourage people to try native glasses they run about 100 bucks and you can change the lenses at will. Quality glasses maje a big difference in success on the water.
  19. Pros jig Inexpensive Great hook up percentage Swimm well Versatile Cons jig Bulky lead Not as weed resistant Can be less efficient in heavy or slimy mats Pros punch rig Efficiency Very resistant to slimy mats Requires less weight to punch grass Cons punch rig Expensive Don't swim as well Less versatility Not as good hookups Trailers dont last as long Annoying to re rig Hope thus helps
  20. For me its all bought what depth the matt or grass is in and where those fish are holding in. Im my experience the bass will hold in depths that range +/- 5', for example if I'm catching bass at 10 feet I'll focus on depths 5 to 15 ft deep and then narrow it down from there. The second consideration is the structure under the mat as cat alluded to if you can find Shell beds hard bottom or deep water flowing in to a shallow grass eBay that's where I start. Then I consider looking for isolated cover or areas where say Lily Pad and millfoil Matt's meat. If I'm unfamiliar with the body of water I may start just punching a creature bait just to get bit then I go right to a skirted punch rig. I'm a big believer in big baits for punching. The final Factor is assessing what kind of bite you're getting if they're hitting it on the fall just use 3/4 or higher and just work efficiently and just fish the fall. Once the water temperature drops to around 65 to 55 degrees I work the Jig off the bottom in a slow rise swimming falling motion.
  21. Yes i always trim the skirt at the bend of the hook so the skirt dosent conceal the action of the trailer.
  22. Its a strike king slither rig 3/4oz boss skirt blue gill 5ot trokar flippin hook rage menace grub with a touch of jj's chartreuse
  23. Im with catt i buy all my jigs, skirts, punch weights, separately i love the weights with the skirt keeper molded in them much more than the skirt hanger. Either option works and i guess im biased because I always use a skirt get much bigger fish and if you want to target dinks why punch in the first place.
