  1. If I'm reading the info correctly, it's 122' slant distance to the marked object from the boat and the object is in 33' of water.
  2. Took my new Helix 5 SI on the water for the first time yesterday and I was pleased with the results. I have never used DI or SI before and I am amazed at the detail these features provide! I am still learning the many functions of the unit, but I think I will understand what is below and around me much better now. The screen is a little small, but I found that I adjusted to it just as I do when watching a small screen TV. Also, the feature that allows me to save screenshots on the micro SD card allows me to closer inspect the images on my home computer and hopefully learn better whaat I am seeing one the water. I have posted a few of the images on the Screenshots post at the beginning of this forum. Comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Mike
  3. Thanks for the confirmation, Wayne! I have a question re: location of object indicated by the cursor in this screenshot - is the distance shown the surface distance or the slant distance to the object? Thanks, Mike

  5. Just got a new Humminbird Helix 5 SI and saved some screenshots from first time on water with it. Still learning how to adjust settings and would appreciate any comments/suggestions. 1. Baitfish ball? 2. Crossing a channel or old roadbed? 3. Fish/baitfish? Thanks, Mike
  6. Thanks again, Wayne P. I'm feeling more confident that the Helix unit will meet my needs and I appreciate your contribution to helping this "old dog" learn a new trick or two! Mike
  7. I live on Lake Keowee and we have shad and herring baitfish here. I've had success on the Spots and Largemouth with Strike King's Redeye Shad in the chrome/blueback color. Mike
  8. Thanks, Wayne P. That clears up the memory slot use! In the map you show with all the waypoints, what are the other icons indicating? Also, can you place a cursor on any of these and return to that spot? Mike
  9. After learning from the posts on this forum, I am seriously looking into purchasing the Helix 5 SI GPS due to the side imaging capability and the price. I plan to use the side imaging to look for depth breaks in water from 30 to 90 feet deep and under deep docks that line the lake. I fish a large, clear reservoir that has very little natural structure like brush, standing timber, weedbeds , etc. The winter pattern here seems to be finding bait holding near drops in the deeper water and the Spotted Bass schools that follow them. Docks also provide structure that's missing naturally and that attract all kinds of bait and fish. I understand that the SD card can only be used for one function - either saving waypoints, tracks, etc. or map upgrade cards. My question is: will the Unimap provide enough performance to allow me to mark promising spots and return to them successfully? Mike
  10. Thanks for the response, Edd! So, if I'm more interested in structure than fish location, it won't make much difference? Mike
  11. Could someone please tell me what would be the downside of using 50/200 Hz and 455/800 Hz transducer instead of the 83/200 Hz and 455/800 Hz for fishing on a reservoir with depths to 150 feet?
