  1. It is nice to see that there are still well spoken young men coming out of Texas. I have to assume that your dad has passed. If so, I'm sorry for that. My dad is my best friend, and I'm 42 years old. I've never been fising with him, but maybe I need to remedy that. I'm new to the site as well, and I'm new to bass fishing. I am also an engineer, and I wish you luck and fortune in the business. I've been fising for a week, and I've caught an 8.5 lb bass (first one ever), a 2 lb and 1.5 lb bass. I'm having a blast, and I could see a boat in the future. I really hate buying things that depreciate and continually cost money, but I could see me doing it to feed this habit.
  2. I am just down the road from it off of 471. I've only pond fished so far, but I could see myself getting up to the reservoir. I'll keep my ears peeled for some good spots.
  3. That's a beauty! I'm new to bass fishing, but I am hooked. It is so much fun to fish and share these experiences!
  4. Yeah, is that crazy? I have not fished in years. I might as well since I have a pond in the back yard! You probably already know that I've pulled line on no less than two dozen birds nests. But, I learn quickly. I figure what works and what doesn't. Most of the variable was in my reel setup and a inconsistent cast. I found out that baitcasters are tough after I bought it. I already feel good about it, but it's definitely more trouble with a light lure. I'm down to a 1/4 oz spinner, and I'm managing it pretty well. I caught the big boy on a 3/8 oz spinner from WalMart. It was a Strike King Tour Grade that is black and has a couple of red accents. It was overcast in the late afternoon following a light rain. I was mostly casting close down the bank. I started to fan out into deeper water, and it must have been about my 4th cast. I was about to give up, and he hit it near shallow water about 20' from where I was standing. I really appreciate all of the replies. It is cool to share this with people that appreciate it.
  5. I'm afraid that it can only get worse from here! I've never had much beginner's luck. I guess that I had to wait 42 years to get mine!
  6. A couple of guys that do some work for me came by the house yesterday and asked to fish my pond. It is a pretty good size pond and covers a few acres. The property is new to me, and I'm not familiar at all with the pond stock. I let them fish and walked out with them to watch. They could run a rod pretty well, and they all seemed to be using similar spinner baits but each had a different color. The only guy to catch fish was running a red spinner bait, and he caught three bass in 30 minutes! I thought that was a pretty big deal. Two were less than 2 lbs, and he released them. He caught a 5 lb bass, and I let him take it home to feed his family. I had never seen a bass that size in person. It was huge. Well, I got it in my mind that I could be a bass fisherman, too. So, I went down to Dick's Sporting Goods and bought a baitcast reel and rod combo. I picked out the closest thing to the lure that the guy was running and went back to the house to fish. I learned pretty well how to pull line on a baitcast reel. I can't begin to count the number of birds nests that I had. As time went by my cast got better, and I got the reel tuned for the lure. I probably spent an hour or more walking the dam and casting. Finally, I had some luck and a little 1-2 lb bass took the bait. He shook the hook before I could get him to shore. That would have been my first bass. I casted a few more times and gave up for the day. I threw some casts this morning for about 15 minutes, and then I needed to get to work. I only had one cast nest up, so that was a serious improvement. At about 4 pm this afternoon I went back out to practice and fish. I spent about 15 minutes walking the pond and casting, and I ended up in the same place where I lost the little bass. I cast 8 or 10 times in different directions. There isn't much structure to this pond at all. I was about to give up when I felt a different sensation on the bait. I gave a little slack thinking that maybe a fish was "mouthing" the bait. Then I felt the tension on the pole, and I knew that I had something on. It felt heavy! I reeled in some slack. I've never caught anything on this pole, so my drag was set all wrong. I was turning the reel, but no line was coming in. I had to set the drag on the fly. I'm reeling him in slowly and my heart is racing. I can't believe that I may land this one! It takes me a few minutes, but I finally get him to shore. I couldn't believe the size of this fish. It was HUGE. I grab the line and chase it down to the edge of the dam where I can get a hand on the fish. I grab it and pull it out of the water. Lord have mercy, I have never seen such a beautiful sight! My first bass was caught around 4pm today. I weighed it and it came in at exactly 8 lb 8 oz. It was a true gift to have caught this fish as my first bass. I returned the gift and released him back into the pond for a second chance. This was the best fishing day of my life.
  7. I am brand new to bass fishing. I started yesteady after watching a couple others catch bass. I bought a baitcaster rod and picked up a couple of spinner baits. I hooked one small 1-2 lb bass yesterday, but he shook the hook before I could land him. Today I caught my first bass. It was 8 lb 8 oz. I released it to be caught again. I look forward to learning a great deal more from all of you.
