  1. I have seen hardly any reviews of this reel at all online or otherwise. Anyone use it and can care to comment?
  2. I am mainly a saltwater fisherman in the bays and occasionally in the ocean. Sometimes in the fresh. Which reel would be better for me? The tatula HD is corrosive resistant and the Coastal zillion is also. The zillion is at least 5 years old I believe and the Tatula HD is new. What do you think is a better reel overall?
  3. I have a BPS Pro Qualifier in the swap shop lefty and 6:4:1 if interested. Only want 50 bucks and only used less than 5 times and in just about new condition.
  4. They look a lot like the shimano calcuttas. Have you compared them? Actually I think the 253L and 300L would be perfect for the saltwater calico bass here.
  5. Well I got the Daiwa Tatula since at 93 bucks it is a no brainer. I like the reel so far and got lucky yesterday and bagged 37 saltwater bass. So far the reel is holding up. It casts well. Not unbelievable distances but good. The t wing seems a little wobbly so hopefully it will hold up.
  6. Well I have tried this reel for a few weeks and it is a solid reel and for the price I can't see a reel this good. Other than the T wing being slightly shaky I really like this reel. It casts well. N ot supersonic distances but good enough. My old curado 201B is a good reel also! I went out and fished for saltwater bass today and had a great day with 37 bass in 4.5 hours and the reel held up fine. As far as Shimano vs Daiwa I have a friend that fishes every weekend in the salt and very hard and he has had to send his shimanos in for repairs more than any other brand. I am new to Daiwa in terms of reels. I have a Lexa and now a Tatula. I may try a Lews next but the inshore version since I fish mostly salt and some freshwater occasionally.
  7. Shimano sahara and a Shimano Bantam Curado 201B
  8. I may try an old ambassadeur if they have any in left handed. Btw I may fish in an area of baja this fall called Punta Abreojos there is a camp there called Campo Rene and it is a mangrove area with snook, grouper, cabrilla, corvina, etc. I will fish it in my kayak. http://www.camporene.com/punta-abreojos-kayaks.htm
  9. The west coasters here are totally against using spinners for inshore fishing. I just don't get it. In the wind they cast further. I have a shimano baitrunner and it is great for live bait applications. For a kayak the spinners are more saltwater resistant. The only advantage of a conventional in saltwater is getting bit on the drop as well as the power of the reel but many spinners now have a lot of drag. I like using b/c for bass fishing though in salt and fresh.
  10. WIth those heavy winds that you fish why didn't you throw a spinner for your inshore casting over those 40 years?
  11. http://www.paddling.net/guidelines/showArticle.html?174 I still think the best solution is the trolling motor but obviously it is the most expensive.
  12. Here is something but it it is twice the price. https://www.austinkayak.com/products/5627/YakAttack-ParkNPole-Stakeout-Pole-6-Foot.html?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PriceGrabber&scpid=36&scid=scsho288728&scr=11/
  13. Here is a list of the kayaks that they have kits for and it includes the motor which has been customized for the mount. Also it is pedal operated leaving your hands free. I am going to think about getting this possibly. http://bassyaks.com/products/kits-available/
  14. I fish in Otay Lakes in Chula Vista, California where the Olympic Training Center is located. The mornings are usually calm wind but like clockwork at 11 or 12 the wind gets turned on. I have a drift chute and an anchor but both can be cumbersome. I am actually thinking of rigging a small trolling motor on my Ocean Kayak Trident 11. How do you guys deal with the wind when bass fishing?
  15. Those are nice but do they come in left handed?
  16. Ok good. I actually own an old green curado 201b reel that has been pretty good. I also bought a lexa 300 last august and it has been ok but disappointing in the casting department. I bought a daiwa tatula recently not sure if it will hold up in saltwater. Some have recommended a Lews so that may be the next I will try.
  17. I am looking for a hybrid that will fish well in salt and freshwater. I fish out of a kayak and have used freshwater reels and as long as I wash them off every time and service them 2-3 times a year I am ok but wonder if the saltwater reels will hold up better. I do inshore fishing here on the west coast for calico bass and yellowtail. Actually a shimano reel repairman suggested that I use spinning gear for my ocean fishing in that the saltwater does not enter the gears as easily. So for the heavier fishing I have been doing that. What I want is bass reels that I can fish in fresh and salt. Any recommendations?
  18. Ok I will give it a go and Daiwa is not that far from me if I have problems. I fish mostly saltwater and a little fresh so I will see how well they hold up. Now I may need a rod to pair with it since the only loose rod I have is a daiwa aird in MH. Since the reel is slightly heavy do you think this rod will work?
  19. I am about to get my tatula in the mail from ebay. I am having buyers remorse. First of all the customer service at Daiwa is severely lacking compared to Shimano. Several times they said they would call me back and never did. Another thing that has me concerned is the t wing grooving issue. I know that several people have had this issue but many also have not. WIth the customer service being so poor I would have to find a local repair guy to deal with it which would be a hassle if this reel doesn't hold up. Anyone have any issues with Daiwa and how is your tatula holding up? BTW: Since I bought my reel from ebay is the warranty still in effect if I was to send it back to Daiwa? Unlikely I would do it though due to their poor reputation for service.
  20. I think that Daiwa now has a terrible reputation for customer service. I have talked to several tackle shops in my area and many will not deal with them anymore. They like Quantum, Lews and Shimano. That being said I am getting a tatula in the mail from ebay today and am having buyers remorse after hearing about the grooving issues. Hopefully I will be lucky and nothing will happen. I am mostly a shimano guy but I recently bought a Lexa and am luke warm about it and now the tatula. Lews may be next choice.
  21. Hello I am mostly a saltwater bass fisherman from san diego that targets the three species of bass here: calico, sand, and spotted bay bass. I also dabble in freshwater but I am a complete noobie. I am always looking for information on equipment and techniques to catch bass my favorite fish. I am a tennis professional and have been for over 25 years. I have also been an executive chef at major resorts in Alaska during the summers. I am an avid golfer with a 4 handicap. I like to sail small craft. My favorite pastime is fishing in my kayak in the bays, lakes and ocean. Looking forward to learning from this group.
