  3. sounds like you are asking for a headache. just get your self a spinning rod for skipping
  4. I had an instance where i was fishing in a boat with a guy in very clear water, we were both using a black and blue 3/8 ounce jig in very clear water. I was using 20# power pro and he was using like 14# flouro or something like that he caught all the fish. I switched after about 30 minutes of this to my rod spooled with 12# gamma clear and bam! I started catching fish we ended up just about even as far as numbers go but he beat me by catching 3 snapping turtles.
  5. gammy #2/0 #3/0 #4/0 #5/0 extra wide gap will cover anything you want to toss out there. I have been playing around with the owner hooks but don't have enough use to say they are better or worse.
  6. I didn't necessarily want my name on these rods. I used to work at gander mountain which included a huge discount on St. Croix and Kistler rods. Unfortunately they write your name on the blank when you order them, I am sure to discourage you from selling them. but what do you do when you realize your crankbait rod is too soft or your dock rod is too long. or you really want to try a carrot stick but the wife is making you sell your stuff to get it ;D
  7. I have a couple rods that have my name on them which i would like to remove. my Kistler looks like it is written in like silver pen then coated with epoxy. my St.Croix has like a printed sticker then covered in epoxy. I would like to trade/sell one or two of these. thanks Ken
  8. I have DSL and i have no problems. everything is slow with DSL. someday i will upgrade.
  9. 6'6 med-hvy avid shimano symetre 2500 20 LB power pro. I use this for skipping docks mostly which is probably 75% of my fishing early in the season. if I could have anything i would probably go with 6'6 med-hvy g-loomis GLX shimano sustain 2500 20 LB power pro problem is you can buy two of my setups for the cost of my "dream" setup.
  10. lowrance H20 is tuff to beat
  11. I bought a helium II and i am not that impressed. it is a sensitive rod but it is very tip heavy. i have a 6'9 med-hvy spinning. I regret not getting a glx or trying out a carrot stick. live and learn i guess.
  12. I am speaking for the bait monkey here, get yourself a shimano citica and then get yourself a decent rod to match what ever you fish the most. granted this will be a bit above your budget but i think you will be happier in the long run. it never hurts to save especially with the equipment that will determine your day on the lake. do you want to deal with backlashes? it has been my experience that vbs (variable brake system) works better than magnets. though i am sure some will contest that. how smooth does your reel need to be? I dont need 20 bearing in my reels. quality bearings is more important than number. in short i see so many people buy cheap equipment and regret it. they spend $60 on a combo and a year later they spend $150 on a combo. I worked for five years at gander mountain and saw this year after year. get yourself quality gear. if you cant afford it, SAVE! you will thank me later.
  13. I have 2 trojan SCS225's that have finally gone bad after 6 years i would say that is a pretty good run for a battery.
  14. about 4 years ago my boat had 3 leaky rivits. i used PC-7 on them they haven't leaked yet. my boat stays bone dry after a full day of fishing. the best part is there is no labor involved just mix it, apply it and give it a couple hours and your good to go.
  15. I regret the purchase of most of my non loomis rods. i wish i would have just paid the extra little bit of $$$ and got what i really wanted. IMX and GLX of course.
  16. I reeled in a rock once too ;D I was drifting/trolling in the boundary waters and caught a pair of sunglasses from the fifties. it had the wings and everything they looked like something elton john would wear.
  17. casual fisherman for mono i would say 3-4 times per season, braid i would reverse it after 2 years and replace once it gets too short or after 4 years.
  18. I typically don't keep fish simply because i am too lazy to clean them ;D however my wife has found a new love for fish so i plan to keep 1-2 each time i go out though definatly nothing over 16-17" unless it is gut hooked and bleeding pretty bad.
  19. easiest way for a pfluger is to throw the reel in the lake and get a shimano ;D ;D j/k if you are fairly new with a baitcaster set it every other one in the out position. you will hear it click either in or out. if you are used to baitcasters go ahead and run it like mr walnuts.
  20. I have heard of problems with power pro in guides but in 6 years of working at gander mountain i saw it only once and that was a very cheap rod. i have been using power pro on my avids for a couple years now and have seen zero damage. as far as putting it on the easiest way is to take it in. bait shops will usually run it on their machine, the beauty there is they can keep tight tention on it and it will spool up nice. if you cant do that put enough mono on the spool to lightly cover it, then tie a blood knot. be sure to use mono of the same diameter as the power pro. then set the power pro spool on the floor and the line should come off clock wise i believe, it should come off the spool the same way the reel spins to eliminate twist.
  21. i was pretty unimpressed with mine. i hadn't had the chance to play with it in the store first if i had i probably wouldn't have bought it. thinking back i should have got a glx. I thought it seemed really tip heavy and as far as sensitivity is conserned it is a bit above my avids but not quite worth the $330 price tag.
  22. what was wrong. their return policy on guide series equipment is great. if your rod breaks bring it back, no questions asked.
  23. it's the morons that get me. the waterskiers, jet skiers people who just don't care about anyone but themselves. other fisherman that crowd me are definatly the worst though
  24. while i haven't had any work done by him yet... the one thing i really like is how he doesn't slam on people who use different stuff than him. i know a lot of salesman and gun smiths that think they know everything and if you don't shoot what they do you are stupid. reelmech is totally different, while he still has his preferences he also respects your preferences. a stand up guy in my book.
