  1. Been looking for help on this very topic. I too have had my last unit rigged with the cable running up the channel on my Terrova's shaft. I just installed a Helix 9 Chirp Mega SI. It doesn't seem to fit through the Terrova's knuckle running up the groove. Seems the new cable is just big enough to not let it slide through. Looking for an alternate way to deal the cable if I must run it outside the knuckle. Any ideas?
  2. I posted a question yesterday with no response. I'm going at it from a slightly different angle. Does anyone have experience mounting a mega imaging transducer on a Terrova trolling motor? When I ran the cable up the channel and siliconed over it, it doesn't seem to want to fit back through the "knuckle". Has anyone found the same? Any ideas? I sure don't want cable flopping around (especially on an expensive unit).
  3. Help. I am installing my Helix just like my last unit. I mounted the transducer to the trolling motor (Terrova). I had the cable running down the channel on the shaft and siliconed over. With my Helix I set it up exactly the same. I did notice that the cable was thicker but forged ahead assuming that there certainly would be that much clearance. Nope. I worked the trolling motor back through the knuckle. It took everything I could muster to slide it all the way on but knew I couldn't run it that way. It was just as hard getting it back off. I completely cleaned up the silicone and ran the shaft back through with the cable on the outside. Got everything back to square one. It just looks like I'm really going to have watch that cable stowing and deploying that trolling motor. I know I've seen videos of people that have done it without siliconing that cable in. Any assistance would be appreciated.
  4. I am replacing my bow unit. Was very close to pulling the trigger on either a Helix 9 or 10 ($1299 and $1699 respectively). I see that in a week Bass Pro has the Garmin echoMAP 94sv for considerably less ($599). I know that Garmin won't have the Mega Imaging. Saving somewhere between 700 and 1100 is enticing. However, I don't want buy something I wouldn't be happy with. Do any of you have any experience with this Garmin unit? What are your opinions?
  5. There are quite a few good lakes south of the Metro area. Look into buying the book of maps of Iowa lakes. Most Walmarts carry them. I was visiting with an associate at Bass Pro in Altoona last weekend, he mentioned a number of lakes he fishes. Sugema, Wapello, Belva Deer, I may have misspelled all three of them.
  6. I have not looked into your boat or the Crestliner version. 5 years ago I bought a 1775 Competitor (Alumacraft) tiller model. I wanted aluminum but the front casting deck of a bass boat. I love my boat, you could hold a barn dance on the front deck. However, I'm not crazy about running a tiller (wind and lower HP restriction).
  7. I used to warm up my molds with a candle. It also left a lot of soot on the mold. I think that helped quite a bit.
  8. I buy mine at Sieberts. They advertise here. Great selection. Really nice variety. They have tied jigs, painted and untied, or unpainted and untied. I've been ordering from them for a few years now.
  9. I know I do. Just looking for that anonymous nudge.
  10. It does help. I am down to deciding if that 1" diagonal inch is worth the extra $400.
  11. I am replacing my H Bird 859 (up front). I am considering going full bore with Helix 10 Mega Si unit. Not sure if installing a side imaging up front is the way to go. I already have one in back. I just wondered if I would regret it if I just go with down imaging. I'm sure turning the trolling motor will impact the image somewhat. Just would like to get some input from others in the know. Thanks.
  12. Question. Both of the tagged mounts are extremely rigid, does anyone have concerns that they are so rigid that the shock is transferred to the unit? I understand that it's probably better than the unit swinging down and hitting the console or trolling motor pedal. I just wonder about the guts of the unit absorbing all that shock.
  13. I am upgrading my bow unit from a Humminbird 859 to a Helix 9 Chirp DI GPS G2N. I'm assuming the transducer that will come with the unit can't be used mounted to the trolling motor, at least that is what H Bird told me. I have a Terrova so I have the built in transducer. They do have an adapter cable for all the Helix models according to the Minnkota site. If I run my unit through the Terrova's transducer would I be sacrificing anything in terms of the quality of my images? I would appreciate any feedback from any of you that have some experience with this issue.
  14. Good to know. I have been told by a couple people (sales people) that you don't want si up front. I agree with Kicker, I use my si when I'm moving from place to place but primarily di at the bow. I think I have decided to go with a Helix 9 Chirp DI GPS G2N. So the initial question has been dealt with. So I would like my di transducer up front. So that brings up another question. I have a Terrova so I have the built in transducer. They do have an adapter cable for all the Helix models. If I run my unit through that transducer would I be sacrificing anything in terms of the quality of my images? Moderators-I am moving this question to a new thread as I believe it is irrelevant to the original thread.
  15. I appreciate the comments. I'm not sure my 898 transducer can be mounted to my trolling motor. I have also been told that you don't want side imaging read from a transducer mounted on a trolling motor due to the constant turning and change in direction. That's why I thought I would mount the Helix transducer on the transom and run the cable up to the bow.
  16. I ask for your patience as I describe my current set up and future plans. I currently have a hbird 859 di unit at the bow and a 898 si unit at the console. My 859 stopped working, it does have power. Hbird wants $300 to service it. I'm thinking rather than spend any more $ on that unit, maybe it's time to upgrade. I'm looking at going with a Helix 9 Mega SI G2N (I really want to get something with mega imaging). My thought is to use it up front until they come out with mega imaging for di units. At that time I would probably upgrade my back unit as well (moving the side imaging to the back and the down imaging unit up front). If I do purchase a Helix 9 Mega SI G2N it will mean installing another side imaging transducer on the transom. I need advice on this install. I currently have my 898 transducer on the port side on a transducer mounting plate. Would it be best to mount the new transducer on a different plate on the starboard side of the transom? I'm not sure I can get low enough on the plate I'm using for the 898 on the port side. I also have questions regarding the "cross talk" issue. When I move from the back to the front of the boat to fish, do I need to shut down my unit on the console so it doesn't interfere with the new unit up front, or is there a way around that? I apologize for the lengthy post. I would appreciate any help on this I can get.
  17. Thanks.
  18. So I'm close to ready to start assembly of my own jigs. Got my silicone skirt material from fishingskirts.com and the jigs are on order from Sieberts. I read about flat living rubber. Fishing skirts doesn't carry living rubber. There is a livingrubber.com site but all there stuff is round. From the reading I've done it seems the flat is better. Can anyone tell me where they get their flat living rubber?
  19. I really appreciate the feedback so far.
  20. After doing considerable reading on this site on structure fishing I decided to order and read "SpoonPlugging". I am about done and have really enjoyed the book, a great read. I know I have wasted many years on haphazard fishing. I want to implement a lot of what I have read. I also ordered Bill Murphy's book. Hey, lots of time until ice off. Anyway, one big question I have is what do those of you, that utilize Buck's principles, do for really checking deeper water? I don't intend on buying any of those spoonplugs. I'm also not sure how to feel about trolling. I did plenty of it walleye fishing, but not so much with bass. I also believe that with our mapping technology we now have, maybe that takes care of alot of why he trolled. I guess my bigger question is how have you used his principles? Thanks.
  21. DW, Just have to tell you I love your profile pic. My wife and I are ISU grads and season ticket holders. Having a great winter at Hilton. Two things I love fishing and Cyclone basketball. Doug
  22. So I found the "Best of..." thread and the articles I'm looking for. Like I say, still learning.
  23. Guys, I'm still learning how to fully use the resources on the site. A couple of things, first I am trying to find the article by Catt, I believe, Demystifying Structure. I have done a lot of reading but always feel I'm hopping into the middle of something. Looked in articles and didn't find it. Maybe I'm not looking correctly. Is there a search function within the articles tab? Second question, Catt you mentioned an article, I believe, Know Thy Shad 1 and 2. Just need help finding it. Thanks. Doug
  24. As I mentioned in my intro. I am a converted walleye fisherman. Mainly converted by frustration and simply that I have always had more success bass fishing than walleye. I have been a follower of a popular walleye forum for years. In the few weeks since I joined this forum I have to say I am very excited. I'm a teacher and am always trying to learn what I can to become a better fisherman. I am guilty of beating the bank. This produces some success but very limited. I want to learn what I can to become a more consistent bass fisherman. Structure discussions fascinate me. There is so much I can learn from you on this topic. Another topic I have tried to find good information on is forage species, their life cycles, movements and such. I have struggled to find good information on the topic of forage. Well, this is my long winded way of saying how much I appreciate all the knowledge you folks are sharing. This gives me so much to do waiting for ice out.
  25. Thanks folks for all the ideas. I really like SiebertOutdoors site. Lots of good stuff at great prices. At their prices I'll buy painted. I can still play with the skirts.
