  1. A while back I had picked up some 3/8th ounce Grid Iron Arky Jigheads from Seibert Outdoors. That is a really nice jig head with an extremely sharp Owner hook. I tied a few up Saturday night with about a tab and a half of round rubber (brown, black and tan) and used a Netbait Baby Paca Craw in Alabama Craw as a trailer. I planned on fishing the upper end of the local reservoir where the prespawn largemouth first start showing up in spring when the water gets to 55 - 58 degrees. I found fish on banks protected from a NW wind with a fairly fast drop into 3-5 feet of water. Almost always tight to the shore and laydown logs. That Arky Jighead allowed me to skip that jig right into the heart of those laydowns. The first two bass are the best from Easter. The others are some better jig bass from earlier in the season.
  2. I am pretty sure Zona is using the screen name "Kamala"
  3. nice looking kayak! I believe you chose wisely, finding a kayak that is easy to get on and off the water with leads to more frequent use
  4. It is one their "closeouts" right off their website? if so, I have purchased two of those closeouts and both looked brand new to me and have worked flawlessly for years.
  5. I believe the Mad Frog Liberator might give you the transducer depth you need. The TDA16 has a 16" long arm and the TDA19 has a 19" long arm. http://www.madfroggear.com/liberator/liberator.html http://www.madfroggear.com/prices.html The convenient thing about the Liberator arm is that is can be easily flipped up out of the way when in shallow water. and there is always the DIY trip to Home Depot way!
  6. When I am on largemouth water the first thing I reach for is a skirted jig but when I am on smallmouth water the first thing I reach for is a tube. I would expect your finesse jig combo would also make a good tube rod. I have tried to force feed smallmouth bass on my local rivers skirted jigs with inconsistent results but it always seems like they will eat a tube.
  7. I would trust it, unless I am missing something your line just was in contact with water.
  8. Nice work! I use Trilene XT in 14 and 17 pound test for most of my bass fishing. After reading your results I am tempted to put a co-poly like Yo-Zuri on another baitcasting reel this season to compare side by side. I do scratch my head on looking at the results on Berkley Sensation. Berkley touts that as their low stretch sensitive line but your results show it stretchs more that Trilene XL! There is no truth in advertising!
  9. I go barbless when I am fishing big 10" worms in the summer. In my experience bass will just straight swallow a worm in a blink of an eye. I do not have that same problem with a jig. With a barbless hook and the "behind the gill" hook removal procedure (if you are familiar with that technique) even a deeply hooked bass can be quickly unhooked and released unharmed. I know it works as I landed a five pounder two months later after I had gullet hooked him on a worm.
  10. Anyplace that Northern Snakeheads are bow hunted on the Tidal Potomac seems to make for some very nervous Snakeheads. Before the heavy bow hunting began I would frequently have Snakeheads at Mattawoman swim up to the side of my kayak to take a look at me. Now they frequently explode into cover at the slightest disturbance. I have a couple of spots tucked away with bad access for a larger craft where Snakeheads are still fairly bold.
  11. I like to tie a 6" length of fluoro leader onto my monofilament main line. Then before I tie my lure on I trim back the first 6.5" to get rid of that section that is most likely to fail on me.
  12. The largemouth bass fishing on the Potomac River has been on the decline for the past 5-6 seasons. It used to be one of the best tidal bass fisheries in the country. There is much debate on the cause of the decline. Water quality and the loss of aquatic vegetation are the most frequently cited reasons. This is just my personal opinion but it seems that it is easier for the Maryland DNR to enact regulations to restrict fishing than it is for Maryland or Virginia to actually clean up the water and get the grass healthy again.
  13. The water I winter fish for largemouth ranges from 38 - 43 degrees. During that period I basically only use suspending jerkbaits (like a Lucky Craft Pointer 100 or 78) and a football jig & craw. Some anglers I fish with will use a Blade Bait (like a Silver Buddy). If my water goes below 38 degrees I am likely getting skunked and just hoping for a bite. If my water hits 45 degrees or warmer then a lot of other presentations come into play.
  14. Thanks for posting that. I just ordered four bags of the 8" Tournament Worm. You should get a commission!
  15. All of February 2015. 7 brutally cold fishing trips. The only thing I caught were two channel catfish and a mild case of frostbite. I was on a mission to catch a bass without resorting to a warm water discharge area. The mission failed.
  16. Trilene XT and it would be 14 pound test if I had to be that specific.
  17. If we are talking about a spinning combo then I will spend more on the rod than the reel. I do not use spinning rods all that frequently. If we are talking about a baitcasting combo then it is the reverse. Nothing better to me than a baitcasting reel that casts and retrieves as smooth as silk for years and years!
  18. For starters I would recommend taking a look at the Lew's Speed Spool LFS Series Casting Reel. At $ 100.00 it won't break the bank in case you find that baitcasters are not for you. I have a couple of these and feel that they do handle and cast very well.
  19. If you get caught without a scale try clipping a length of line the same length as the bass (and do the same for girth if you have time). With those measurements you can get a fairly accurate estimate on weight.
  20. Congrats on the season opener greenie! Great looking fish. Is that a Strike King Structure Head Jig?
  21. No personal use with Flouroclear but another angler I fish with frequently also told me that he had breakage issues with Flouroclear. I know P-Line CXX is a strong line. I have used some of that in 17 pound test that just might be the strongest line I have ever used. I most frequently use 14 and 17 pound test Trilene XT mono for jigs. The only reason I drop down to 14 pound test is when I feel conditions warrant longer casts.
  22. I have used it and oddly enough I get the best results from the really cheap nail polish (holds pretty well and does not interact with soft plastics). I will also soak new unpainted jig heads in vinegar overnight to get rid of that shiny metal finish. It turns them that dull gray. Unpainted jig heads may not look great but I find the bass do not have a preference. On bottom contact jigs it is the trailer that gets their attention.
  23. that is a largemouth bass since we are playing this game, make a guess on this one:
  24. nice way to start 2016, congrats!
