  1. I use the navionics site and they have good maps but I don't know if the small lakes in the area are mapped on the chips. I would think the larger ones are.
  2. I am happy that they took the time to answer my email and that there not killing the bass
  3. This was the response I got today from the WA DNR Sorry for the delay in responding. Our staff has been communicating with our staff in other regions and agencies and has not found anyone or agency, including DNR that has been on Haven Lake. Our staff suspects the Dept of Ecology may have shocked a few fish for a study recently, but they haven’t been able to confirm that at this time. We hope this helps.
  4. My eyes suck and I fish mostly with one of my two kids in a 12 foot nucanoe. I have a ram mount but I need to look at 800 series to see if they can be ram mounted. I plan on running the map function a lot so half of a small screen for sonar seems to be a big loss. This will be my first sonar unit, as I now live in WA and sight fishing the good looking spots does not work well for me here and I have gone two seasons now without a decent topwater bite to help out. These fish seem to be all trout eaters and the lakes here have no real features to target like points and humps that I can study and look for while on the water. Dam salad bowls.
  5. I am looking at fish finder /gps units and was looking at the 800 series hummingbirds. Is this to large to have in a YAK or should I be looking at a smaller unit. It seems like this size has the best options and will be easy to see. Additionally I am looking at getting a boat in a few months once the winter sales start and don't want to wish I got a larger unit. Is there to much of a good thing when dealing with sonar units???
  6. I don't have an issue about any and normally use the rounded nose set sold for three dollars at Walgreens. Are you pulling the braid into the blades or trying to cut it by moving the handles. Pulling the braid in leaves nice cuts and works great. The line cutter on my bench made knife works good to.
  7. Going in with a reasonable amount 4 boxes and a bag for plastics is what I consider a good compromise. The pro's bring so much with them my boat would sink.
  8. S Hovanec that picture with your blue cork cutting tool is the worst I have ever seen. Did a guy buy that rod???
  9. I was out on a lake that has a 7 pm curfew on boats ish. That's when the party barges come out, and the real drinking begins. I was heading in as I spotted two people swimming far out in the lake. I warned them to be careful but they just replied don't worry old man we will be ok. Seems like they had a death wish or something.
  10. I would bring a few packs of 4" keitech swimbaits. I have caught trout croppie and bass on these as well as a few pickerel. Don't know what they wont catch.
  11. I like it a lot, and I bet it would work well for a retirement gift for an air force guy. Don't know there rank well enough to know what that would be
  12. What do you consider a pond. All but two spots I fish are less than 100 acres.
  13. I use a 2000 size reel and use 6 lb sniper. I did not see what size reel your using but if the spool is very small then the flouro may be more difficult to deal with. I like Berkeley XL just fine also and have used it down to 2lb in a trout stream. I will not go below 4 again but the Xl and flouroclear work great.
  14. I was out bass fishing today and having a hell of a time trying to get a bite. There were a million boaters and ski's all over the place and I was just grinding it out. Hour after hour I was giving it all I had. I did manage 1 fish about a pound and a quarter and then about 830 I roll by a dock and the guy asked what I was fishing for. I had a 15 or so min conversation with him and he related how last week the DNR came threw and electro shocked the lake and pulled out as many bass as they could. The details I don't know if I completely believe but he said that a few 12 lb and many more above five were taken and thrown in a trash can. Mind blown. The last few hours were a drag and I caught nothing else. This really ticked me off and I can only hope that the guy was miss informed or did not understand what he saw. The people at the lake hate the bass as this state is very pro trout. Bass fishing on the Olympic peninsula is very challenging for me to begin with and this just sucks! End rant!!!!
  15. I am guilty of only using the palomar knot and it has been mostly good to me. Its fast and easy to tie. The only other thing it do is snell.
  16. I hate cats and I love grumpy cat go figure
  17. spro makes a very good small frog. The larger one is not that big either compared to some of the others.
  18. Fish can see just fine at night. I did not get this threw my head until I was fishing in a weedy lake with a buddy in Connecticut and he was killing them on a watermelon seed trick worm.
  19. That might be worth a custom build as its specialized. Only issue is you have to know what you want. MHX has a shooter series of blanks to target this need and might be worth a look. Unfortunately I don't see a kit from them to build one, so you would have to search out components or give them a call if you went that route.
  20. I cant believe it hasn't been said yet but use gear that your very comfortable with and have dialed in. This is not the time to try out your new bait caster that is not dialed in. I use both spinning and casting but dial up my mag brake a few notches at night.
  21. One time is not enough to prove it was anything. Did you have a bad knot, and now your going to tie a thousand knots to make sure you get it perfect every time. For all the effort get some YHB in 15lb and call it a day. Its tough as nails and cheap. I have to cut this line and not with my teeth because even that hurts.
  22. I have and use luna's and there a good reel but then you mention weight. I also have a zillion HLC that I use on a dobyns 764RM that is the bee's knee's. I have seen a project on TT for a cranking steez and the people that have built them are all about it. If you can find a 5.3 zillion j-dream I think you would be very pleased.
  23. If your looking for a topwater maybe a Sammy might be the ticket. I also like the r2s bubble walker.
  24. I run 6lb sniper on a mlxf so if your running a full medium 8 would be good. I don't fall into the 7 hype but some swear by it.
  25. Fenwick is a great way to go small mouth or bass series
