  1. Well it's winter and things are slower right now. Jigs, hard jerkbaits and swimbaits are the go to baits right now. I will toss a glide just for fun and new to big baits and want to use them.
  2. https://www.barlowstackle.com/Mustad-35647BN-Treble-Hooks--P473.aspx Any experence with this hook or dealer. Looking for round bends and this seems like a decent deal...
  3. Might be how you pull out backlash? Doe that model have a plastic thumb bar. Light braid is like a saw especially if it's 4 carrier.
  4. I would consider painting the bottom with the new plastic spray paint. It's going to scrape off but leaving the top red will make you easier to spot in an emergency. I have a desert tan nucanoe because I think it matters but to each their own. Some people use black sharpie on braid so opinions vary widely. Fish strait braid don't worry about paint. Fish a florocarbon leader because it makes a difference then paint it up...
  5. Walmart closes red label out during the winter for 5 dollars a spool near me. Thats very cost effective and my fishing buddy wipes them out.
  6. I think carbon nanotubes will make a huge diffrence in rods but how long until that's cost effective.
  7. I would say #1 reason for rod breakage is high sticking and boat flipping. #2 would be wiping the rod trying to get a lure Un stuck. I have broken two rods one each way. Lesson learned. The heavier liNE just amplifies these abuses to the blank. The weakest link in a setup is normally the knot on the lure but if using heavy braid the rod will give first.
  8. You can use what ever line you want. Even small braid 30lbs has enough strength to brake most rods. I have never broken braid off on a fish ever. I have casted lures of into the sunset on 20 with a super spook. Most people step it up to prevet dig into the reel or to prevent backlash brakeoffs. If this is your first experience with braid try 40.
  9. A nice reel is like a hotrod. The reels true potential lies in a tune that fits with the way you fish. The sv spool is nice for not backlashING but is not truly tuned for the most distance. There are guys that know how to tune some reels to fit you and your style best. I have an old jdm zillion hlc with a dobyns 764 that will almost empty the spool on a 1/2 to 3/4 crankbait or rattle trap. The inductor has a much stronger spring to reduce the dampening. Wide open it can get quite wild but for distance with a bait 1/2 or over its hard to beat. What are you fishing?
  10. P-line 100%. Almost identical to sniper but a better value. I also like sniper.
  11. No not at least from a marketing standpoint. Every year the last years model is obsolete
  12. So now that all the water is hard what's the chance this rain and warmer next week may open some water back up. My closest lake is about 1" thick.
  13. This 1.5 ounces is it a lure or a weight with bait. I fish lures in this size range and the 7'4" avid blank is great. They may have it in the avid x series and it goes 2oz on a swaiver 168 no sweat. This rod is a heavy and you could catfish pike and swimbait with liteer baits no problem.
  14. A lot of the older reels have this. Megabass did a version of this reel. I have always been curious to fish one. Might be intresting to pitch with.
  15. Listing the rods power, action speed and length goes a long way to help people answer your questions in a helpful way. In St croix case the blank also helps like sc3. What is the size of catfish in your area? I live near memphis and the blue's get over 50 lbs. Details give better feedback.
  16. Thanks man. That's more the way I do it but it seems as others have a thing about line watching. As I said I use feel but open to others ways as there is always more to learn.
  17. I have not used that reel but on daiwa there is a little felt on the end of the shaft that takes up some of the play. The main brace that holds the shaft in can be tweeked a little from hard use from punching and frogging. They still work just fine so no reason to worry. Some reels have a little play even when brand new.
  18. Lived in Washington for 3 years and the trout and salmon are easy to score and the trout was all over. The best though was crab. I love the dungeness crabs there so tasty. You may want to check limits and Alaska would let you take the most but there season is shorter. Did not have a lot of frozen lake time on the ponensula so it may be a lot more year round. Never caught an eye out there.
  19. The first thing is hook size as stated. When I get a 4/0 flipping hook buried in a fish I own it. A crank bait has smaller hooks and the weight of the bait can be leveraged to pop out the hook. Hook placement is also a factor but I don't foul hook a fish very often.
  20. I figured you tried to match something that worked well good to know what your refrence was. Talking my dad into a handle mod to steez screw mod. Will see how that works out.
  21. Moderate is used for trebble baits to keep the rod loaded during the fight. It also helps keep the smaller hook on a trebble from tearing out. Medium is a good all around power because it loads easy for casting. Trying to toss a shadrap sr-5 on a medium heavy would be a no go. If you stick to larger baits a medium heavy might be better. Dropshot is an entirely diffrent animal where you want a fast action with really soft tip. I ds with a 2 power but 3 power rods can be good to.
  22. So your best friend is a machinist or you have a great job. Changing the spring did not get it done???
  23. Still think the casting tests would provide quality data. It would also give you real world improvement information to go by. Pitching would be most easy to replicate. Do all the tests back to back on the same day... then you could determine if there is any value...
  24. Spin tests are not a real indication of performance. I would do a pitching test in your yard with the same rod and exactly the same line and bait. The spin test assumes the same level of lube cleanliness and applied pressure along with exactly the same amount of spool tension and breaking. The most accurate way would be to swap bearings in the same reel and do the test and not change any settings.
  25. Mono and braid are fine on a 2000. I have no issue with 6lb sniper or pine 100%. If you plan on heavier flouro it's the only line you need to step up for. If that is a line you use a lot the extra weight may be worth it.
