  1. In casting i have used a 4 power dobyns and a mf and mhf in St croix. The actions are faster in St croix, and I like them better when a line other than braid is used. Only used an avid x in spinning but the running guides are a lot smaller and if you fish a lot of cold weather or braid to leader I would go regular and not x.
  2. Maybe taking the time to show him the ropes wile off the water and discussing you plan on the way to the lake may reduce your fustration. He might learn a different way, who knows. But he is a friend and there must be a reason so try and be a good friend back. "Says the guy with angry in his screen name"
  3. More disturbed about the general fund that they take for fishing and do other stuff. Mostly California. You saw this on the newes about the Orville damage problem. No ethics issue in a corrupt system.
  4. I like to downsize in that case and throw the Duo bug. Caught everything from bass to bluegills.
  5. I have and will always have a license. It angers me to see state's gouge the honest people who try and do the right thing out of state. There should be one price for a year for everyone. A reasonable price for a two day or one week would increase compliance considerably. My home state of California may be the worst about this but I don't know that as fact. I like the NY rule about display while on the water, makes for quick easy enforcement.
  6. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Owner_Weighted_Beast_Hook_w__Twistlock/descpage-OWBWT.html over a dollar cheaper, free shipping over 50 dollars and no tax.
  7. Should be 3 or 4 in a pack.
  8. 40 braid is a good all around size. I use a lot of 12 and 15lb yhb. 14lb Berkeley xl for top water only on one rod.
  9. I fish gamakatsu most but like owner a lot also. Those death trap trebles are money on a jerkbait.
  10. The owner beast 4/0 is exactly what you want. The flashy swimmer comes in heavier weight and the blade can be removed or changed
  11. The brass gears are as heavy duty as they come. My alphas have aluminum gears but to assume yours did I guess was foolish on my part. The width and size of the gear has a lot to do along with material how well it will hold up to heavy use. Heavy duty reels normally run brass. A zillion may be more whathan your looking for if you plan to use swim baits under 3 oz.
  12. Great question I think it's a wider body shape based on a video I saw. But I cannot state that as fact.
  13. I agree that the drag is a major limiting factor for the max applied force to the gears. If a longer handle is installed the reel may be used on applications normally used for larger reels. In that case it would experience more wear on all internal parts, and just turns it into the wrong reel for the job. It will then most likely have failures sooner and more often resulting in the user saying the reel is not good, when it's the users change causing the problem.
  14. I disagree. The lever arm becomes longer you can apply more force. There are a lot of dumb things like changing the ratio and that's garbage but the would not sell longer power handles if it did nothing.
  15. Those poor aluminum gears.
  16. I prefer braid to leader for spinning rods. On casting rods I prefer one line. For most cases that's 12lb yhb. It has decent abrasion resistance good knots and handles decent. Braid is also good in a lot of the same areas but sucks on rip rap. Depending on your setup strait floro in 10 or 12 for cranking can cast plenty far. If you live in an area where the water is very clear and deep it may be your best choice. Every liNE is a compromise. For the money and performance for cranking 10 or 12 yhb is my choice.
  17. No need for the lower end on a heavy cover rod and the top end is important. If this is a punch setup a 5 power would be my choice.
  18. Some states have line boxes or tube's for recycling. Might call your state dnr to see if they have a program
  19. Yeah it's that good. They are moderate fast so I love them for everything with trebbles. Fishes a standard 1/2 Oz crank bait just as good as a deps 175. I have the c40 and my fishing partner uses the slantbridge model. Very different handles but the blank acts very close to the same.
  20. There are wiring charts that state voltage and distance and give you a Guage to run. There are variables that change things and blanket statements get people in trouble or don't provide the best result for the money and effort spent. Going bigger will never cause an issue but smaller increases resistance decreases performance and generates heat which wastes energy. When in doubt go one size bigger.
  21. They have a tiny deps and a tiny swaiver. The glide is tight due to the small size and IMO big glides are where it's at. The deps 250 is better than the 175, and the hinkle shad has the best glide I have seen. My phoney is no slouch either, but in glides bigger is better in most cases.
  22. Small swim baits an or an arig. Them meeting bottom is no good.
  23. You have twice the volume of wire. You could check a 24v wiring table to see if the Guage is large enough to carry the load at that length
  24. Lots of good frogs out there, I like the spro Bronze eye and the r2s bully wa. 50 or 65 is standard frogging line. I normally use 832 but trying the 4 carrier pp to cUT the vedge a little better. The heavy vs mh debate may be dictated by your situation. A heavy might be good if you are casting into stuff you can't get your boat into.
  25. The rod has no idea what's on the end and it does not matter. If you fight the fish correctly and have a reasonable drag setting it's no problem.
