  1. Amen. How about some advice that does not include shad!
  2. Your appartment rules may limit choices but anything in the overhead will help a lot. One thing to remmeber is that you need to have a broad holding system. hanging the entire weight on two points/straps may cause sagging or deformation of your yak. I got some eyes from harbor freght and make a tarp to support a large portion of the bottom while hanging it from the celing. I did this in my garage so i dont know if you have a place inside your appartment to do this or not.
  3. I have had some outstanding deals from the auction site. Is to good to be true a 700 dollare reel for 305? The part about the reputable seller is gold. I find a lot of my stuff from the same people. Simmions sporting goods has had some real deals that i could never beat again. Rod shipping is another animal. I have had some bad issues with bad handling on rods from the shipping companies. That should be of little supprise to most.
  4. If your intrested in making it good as new i would measure the tip with a caliper or micrometer and order a fugi guide and some tiptop glue from mudhole. The guide in the second picture has broken threw the epoxy and should be re-wraped. I am building my first rod, so i will not say its easy but its not the most difficult thing in the world to do. Check out the video's on mudhole for repair tips and how to's.
  5. I was just looking at this bait to pick some up. I'm along for the ride on this one. To note there are 3 versions i think and v2 seems to be the most common which is suspending.
  6. I am left wondering if you are looking for a rod for 3/8ths and above or a light weight rig. 3/8ths is my point where both medium and medium heavy work well depending on cover. If your looking at heavy cover then the line should be braid as the weeds will mask the line and it will not matter. If your in open water then the medium and the flouro should be a good match. Some people like to flip and punch with flouro but i dont like the managment issues with very heavy flouro in the 20+LB range.
  7. I like the arkey jig from serbert as an all around jig. It skips well and is the most well rounded IMO.
  8. 1. never keep fishing the same bait that worked yesterday or last week. Determine a good time period and shift tactics or baits if what your doing is not working. 2. Never leave your tackle in the back of the yak with your 3 year old daughter and expect a few things not to be float tested while your fishing. She will entertain herself one way or another. 3. Verify the type of fish your chasing is actualy in the lake your at. This happend twice.
  9. It is weird that the fishing departments can be vastly diffrent store to store. He may have listed what they have and we are not being helpful saying what they should have. The ship to store for free is good. If he is using a spinning reel berkely XL is decent and i have used it a lot for a long time. Very soft and has some stretch so not great for jigs or large single hook stuff in the rocks and weeds.
  10. I use 65 but i flip in heavy vegitation. I only use braid as I am in heavy cover so there is no reason for a leader. The knot is also going to be a high failure point because your hook set with a heavy guage fliping hook is going to be massive. Flipping and punching is heavy duty fishing, and reducing failure points is a hight priority for me. Line choice may have you uping your choice like daiwa samuri braid is a lot thinner so most people run higher lb rated line. I like sonic braid but any brand will work.
  11. I have fished the far east CT and now live in the far west WA. I have not fished your waters but i have seen a huge diffrence between coasts and what has worked for me might not be great for you. That being said i will speak to some lures that have worked for me as paint can be diffrent on the same paturn. The kvd 1.5 square bill in bluegill has worked both places very well. I have bagged a brown trout in CT at five pounds and many bass. It works here in WA as well when most other solid lures have not. That brings me to clear lures that work here in the gin clear WA waters. Clear water minnow in the silent version of the same squarebill works great for bass and trout(1.0 size). http://www.***.com/Strike_King_KVD_HC_Square_Bill_Silent_Crankbait/descpage-SKKVDHC.html The spro little john MD in Chartreuse Black Back has had a few biters. The pike minow is very active here and any other bait that is clear with vertical strips works good as well.
  12. I got one from TW when they were closing them out, and i picked up a second from sportsmans warehouse. I had to talk with the fishing rep at the store for the second as it was the demo and there were none left. My first one is beat from falling on rocks and stuff in the river and still kicks tail. Working on a 2500 sol right now, hopefuly pick that up for the same price.
  13. i have only one fish ever hit one, a kokanee. I dont throw it often, kinda found its way down into the bottom of my box.
  14. I felt the very same way so i tracked down an older version that has a full handle. Sometimes new is not better!

  16. I just got my grandfathers old lures and there is some good stuff that i want to use that is very oxdized. There are many mepps and several spoons that are very grimy looking. I was wondering if i should toss them in the walnut polisher for gun brass. Seems like a logical choice but looking to see if i am way outside the box??? I do plan to remove and trash the hooks ahead of time and put on fresh sharp ones before use.
  17. contact serbert. He has exactly what you want a good prices. I love his jig head designs and spend lots of cash there
  18. I enjoy my avids and legends alot. Otter rods one of the best builders IMO uses NFC or st croix blanks. He would not do that if they were junk. I like the power and tapers they have for just about everything. I also like there handles becasue i have large hands. I would advise the OP to contact st croix and let them know what is going on. They have a trade up program that i plan on using for the first time so i will let you know how it works out. They are always friendly and helpful every time i call. The only other company that i get this type of service from is dobyns. Gary answers the phone a lot and how often do you get to talk to the owner of any buisness.
  19. Daiwa advantage 2000. Rock solid performers and i pick them up around a hundred bucks.
  20. Welcome to the site, and to a great hobbie. One of the cold water tactics that works for me is dropshot. Use the same color baits that work in the pond worms and other soft baits. You may want to downsize if your standard fare is not working. A zoom trick worm is a great place to start and you can cut it down, starting at the head. I have a lot of people swear to me that a buzz bait works until ice in so that may be worth a try as well.
  21. i have my gear in 3700 boxes and i grab two and some plastics and throw them in the bag. If its summer then i grab topwaters and my terminal tackle 3700. If its fall or spring i will grab my flatside cranks and terminal tackle. I almost never bring my swim baits on the shore, but if thats the plan then those are all i would bring. Make a decision on the season and the weather outside on that day and if your only brining one rod that makes it even easier. I always bring two and my largest problem is the second rod. Smaller boxes would give your more combination possibilities but i like the challange of working with what i have and not worrying about what i have at the house.
