Hello DVT, are clutch bar plates supposed to be fixed to the reel? I have a Cabelas reel where the left plate is very loose and causing problems when engaging the reel. I super glued it down months ago, but it's back loose again. Also, would a drop oil on this plate be beneficial once its secured?
Thanks,
Chris
emjaysmit, I can't agree with you more. I was fishing a month ago and grabbed my friend's 7'MH Ugly Stik(which felt like a weighted broom stick) and had no problems detecting a bite.
Bluebasser, I've been eyeballing this same rod for some time now. Closest Academy is 80 miles away though. Its looks very well built. Does this one ever go on sale?

$50 is a steal for the Extreme! BPS needs to cut the fat on the PQ and offer it again with Duralumin shaft and drive gear. Maybe add the Carbonlite handle and there you have a 6.5oz reel.
I prefer to use this Extreme it's feather light and fun to fish with:

The green Extremes from a couple yrs back? I have no problems with mine and they are very small and compact. Wouldn't pay the retail $89 for one though.
Well Seaguar Red Label handles the best IMO for that price range. I've been using it on one of my setups all year. However, it does fray easier and wouldn't recommend it for bottom contact lures unless you have a clean bottom.
Evan, I haven't either at least not at the reel seat. I balance my rods at the trigger beforehand and it doesn't matter what reel I put on the rod. Of course, I hold the rod where the trigger splits my ring finger and middle finger.
Seems like when I'm all hunkered over in the tight quarters of a kayak the handle/butt of the rod gets in the way more. Once you get into the 7' rods and longer then the handles just get longer. This is my experience.
Sounds like your are trying to justify buying another reel
Back in the day (90s) jig fishing could be done with a 5:1 reel. They keep getting faster and faster and faster.
These are good "trunk rods" and they are super light.

I started on cheap Bass Pro reels by watching Youtube videos about cleaning & supertuning. I would be hesitant to start the learning process on a nice Abu Mgx.
