  1. Good summary. Also, as a note, anyone having trouble with quality flourocarbons breaking needs to check their lines for damage, or learn new/better knots. The improved clinch is my go-to for flourocarbon and I very rarely have problems with knot strength. uni knots have also done me well.
  2. I fish hybrid as a leader pretty often, but not typically on my finesse rods. When I think finesse, I think small diameter and super limp. Hybrid in 6-8lb is comparable to 8-12lb lines in both diameter and strength, and while it's super abrasion resistant, it's not very limp. I use 7lb Sniper as my typical go to, but Seaguar Invisx is also a great option and not super expensive.
  3. I don't think it's perfect, but he outlines the properties of the different wavelengths at different depths and water clarities and provides some pretty good outlines for choosing colors. I think it's a good read to help build confidence in colors/lures and not waste a whole lot of time on the water. And it's a fast read.
  4. I've had success with them as trailers on swim jigs and even spinnerbaits. They're really versatile. They're a lure you can be really creative with regarding rigging based on where you're fishing and conditions. The tail and ribs provide a great action fished fast, and even better fished slow. On lakes, they're great on a swimming/swimbait head fished above weed beds and allowed to drop in pockets. On rivers/current, just get them down on the rocks and the current will provide action (you can dead stick them or flutter them like a dieing minnow). If you need more profile, flash, or thump they make excellent spinnerbait trailers.
  5. You want a moderate action rod. Something in the MH/heavy range makes sense for deep diving baits (10' plus) while something in the medium range is ideal for square bills, jerkbaits (if you tend to run braid), and most shallow diving baits. For around $100, there are solid fleeing from St Croix, Abu, and and a ton of other manufacturers. I'm partial to St Croix and since updating their Mojo series, you may find a Mojo glass Rod on sale for under $100. Do you have a Cabelas or large sporting goods store close by?
  6. I'm probably the least religious guy posting here, but I wanted to wish everyone a happy holidays and thank you guys for being so informative and helping me get back into fishing.

  7. Sorry if this is covered, but a good and applicable read on this topic is Greg Vinall's Why Fish Don't See Your Lures
  8. I like both, though, I don't thrown the T-rig nearly as much as I used to. They both have advantages and are super versatile. If I can, I kind of like having both tied up because they can fish a lot a like and offer a huge range in profiles. The skirt can can add to the profile, and with a quick switch of a trailer you can go from mimicking a crawfish, to mimicking a sunfish. On the T-rig, you can fish almost anything, but it works best on the bottom. The simple answer, for me, is to show the fish I tigons until i can figure out wh out what they like.
  9. So, Jameson Cask Mates is one of the smoothest whiskies I've ever tasted. It's not a punch of flavor like an Islay Scotch, but it's a very difficult whisky to not like.
  10. let me talk to you about this timeshare that I was saving for someone special...
  11. Oban is tasty. This Wednesday we'll be doing whisky and cigars and I think we're going Irish. It'll likely be either Michael Collins 10 or Jameson Cask Mates. I haven't tried the Cask Mates yet, so I'm looking forward if that's the case. As for the Michael Collins, Cooley Distillery makes a lot of great Irish whiskey.
  12. This is why I'm glad I'm not a parent. By giving your kids toys, does that reward them doing ridiculous ****? and your friend... That kid is awful, but the story is hilarious!
  13. I can't wait for my back surgery to finally heal. I can't wait to get back on a stream out west with a Patel and a flask. I'm committed to not totally suck at fly fishing by 2017... Or at least get back to enjoying cigars.
  14. I really love that about whisky. Price tag doesn't really matter as much as personal taste... For the most part.
  15. I read this before. Such a crazy story. As a Bills fan, he's always seemed like a great guy, too.
  16. Wild Turkey 101 is delicious. It's my favorite bottle for under $30. Have you tried Rare Breed? And now that the air is getting cold, peaty Scotches are perfect. Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Talisker, etc all kinda rock once it starts to get cold at night.
  17. Good luck, and keep your head up!
  18. Those are two solid fish to end the season on. I'm hoping conditions aren't too awful this weekend and that I can get a few days on the Suquehanna before calling it quits. Back surgery pretty much wrecked late summer/fall for me that might be forgiven if we can get into some solid 4+lb fish. Fingers crossed that water levels don't get crazy.
  19. That sounds like any limp flourocarbon.
  20. Is Bigbill secretly Clay Mathews?
  21. I fish 20# Power Pro Slick to 7lb Sniper and have no problems with a double Uni on my Avid X. In fact, I have several Rages that I'll run 40+lb braid and 12lb Hybrid (more realistically 15lb diameter with-17lb strength) and have had few problems with the double Uni and those (I believe) have even smaller guides. a few notes on knots... Practice helps a lot with any line to leader knot, and specially in getting them small and clean. I'll also sometimes dot the knots with super glue the night before (I tend to do this more with Seaguar Invisex because the knots seem to slip more than with either Hybrid or Sniper). Also, remember to check your leader knot throughout he day, but especially after catching a fish or running it through abrasive cover.
  22. I have a 6'9 avid X ML XF and it's great for all of those things, and actually way more versatile than I'd expected.
  23. Why not just tie on with a snap instead of dropping the extra $300+?
  24. The dragonfly might be a bit pricier, but you can find Lowrance Elite 5Xs for that price range.
  25. Can this merge wih the Bigfoot thread?
