  1. Hold on, it was 18-13 at half with FSU having possession to start the 3rd Quarter. I don't think it was so much that FSU is a bad team, rather that they were hit by an Oregon tsunami. When Oregon is hitting on all cylinders, they can embarrass any team. When they aren't, other good teams have a shot to beat them. It is also difficult for teams who haven't played against that high tempo style to hang with them for 4 quarters.
  2. When the revolutions begin & society breaks down, us bass fisherman with "too much gear" will be prepared. We will be able to feed our families for years without having to ever buy another lure, rod, reel or spool of line. So see, having so much tackle is the responsible thing to do. Now where the hell did I leave my tin foil...
  3. It has been 4 days since I was on the water, I am going crazy. I am going to try to hold off until Saturday, in order to hit the water on the 3rd day of rising temperatures (with a near full moon thrown in for good measure). It will be tough going until the morning temps pass 55 degrees... Before you cuss me out, remember I have to put up with high real estate prices and a bunch of annoying people in order to enjoy this climate.
  4. My 3 biggest fish have been caught at 6:30 am, noon & 3:00 pm. Conditions were clear, cloudy & party cloudy (corresponding to the above times). Barometer was steady, dropping & rising (again in order with the above times). Months were August, October & November. So should I conclude that fishing at night or in the Spring is a waste of time if you are fishing for big ones?
  5. It is a jerkbait sold at Sports Chalet. I believe it is made by Matzuo, but I may be incorrect. When I bought mine, they were selling them 2 to a pack; the 4" regular sized model with a 2" mini sized model added in for free. I have that exact color, it works fine.
  6. it is bad enough I took Blutarsky from a 100 acre lake and stuck him in a little koi pond, I don't want to insult him by artificially keeping the water warm. Plus it is a learning experience to watch him during the changing seasons & temperatures. On a much smaller scale, he is acting exactly like a majority of fish do on a larger lake. I am curious as to what he will do during the spring. If he is male, will he make a bed? If female, will she lay eggs somewhere (& crossbreed with the bluegill or one of the koi )?
  7. Orange County is now in the dead of winter. Snow down to 1200 ft. on the local hills, people stranded in cars in nearby San Bernardino, it looks like a scene from the movie "The Day After Tomorrow". I think they are going to cancel the Rose Parade due to coldness. We have to endure a few more days of this wicked frost, I'm not sure our community is going to make it. I need to hold on until the weekend, when 70 degree temperatures return, signaling the end of this winter nightmare...
  8. As I sarcastically mentioned in another thread, Winter has officially arrived in Orange County. We actually had real weather last night, the temps dropped into the 30's and the local hills & mountains got snow. Typically snow level for a winter storm here is 5000 ft., but this morning we awoke to snow all the way down to about 1200 ft. It is melting quickly, and even though it is 47 degrees (& windy) out right now, it feels much, much colder. Anyway, the reason for the weather report was I just went out to feed Blutarsky, my bass. Even though it is nearing mid-day, the koi pond still is in the shadows, so the water must be getting pretty cold. Blutarsky is in the middle of the pond (deepest section), underneath some lily pads. I toss in a nightcrawler & for the first time in his stay at my pond, we doesn't go after it immediately. The crawler wiggles on the bottom, about 2 feet away from him. Then as one of the koi shows some interest in eating it, Blutarsky glides over and inhales it partially, half the worm hanging out of his mouth. I toss a few more nightcrawlers in, literally inches from his nose & he doesn't touch them until they have been on the bottom for 5 or 6 seconds. Remember, this is a fish who when the water is warmer, will grab anything the instant it touches the water. I wish I had a set of fishy long johns I could give the poor dude to warm up. Maybe I should throw a few of those hand warmers in the pond... While watching him, it is easy to imagine being out on the lake and this being a fishes reaction to your offerings. I tend to fish fast, this has got to pound into my head that during the colder months, I best really slow down. Bounce that dropshot right in front of their nose and don't be in such a hurry to move it. Thank heavens the forecast is increasing warming for us over the next few days, hopefully when I go out on Saturday, the fish will have begun to thaw out a little.
  9. Wait, is it irony if you believe that statement to be above reproach? Just kidding...
  10. I agree, that is why I was irritated when I caught my PB and it weighed 8.0 exactly. I was glad it was 8 lbs., but I knew saying it was 8 even would make it sound like a fish story. I put her in the water for a few moments and weighed her again, once more the Rapala scale read 8.0. I even went home and tested the scale with some weights & it was right on. d**n. How in the world can I get so discouraged that a fish weighed 8.0 instead of 8.1?
  11. I'm not sure, I thought Al's van had a "Free Candy" sign on the side of it.
  12. That sounds completely different than what happens now. Every couple of months, a full sized van will pull into the entrance to our neighborhood (300 plus homes in total) and out comes about five or six kids. The spiel begins when you open the door & the kid says "Don't be scared, I'm not here to rob you, I'm selling magazine subscriptions". The story is that they are trying to win a contest and hope to one day be as successful as you (the person who answered the door) and own a home. Many subtle & not so subtle hints about the difference in race and income level are mentioned, an attempt to create guilt. Where they really differ from kids selling Girl Scout cookies or Helen Grace Easter eggs is when you say no thank you. Instead of thanking you for your time, the response often is either you get called a racial slur or you are accused of only saying no because you are racist. Real classy enterprise, teaching young men & women how to use the race card to get what they want. My wife has confirmed with about a dozen neighbors that they experienced the same treatment, so I believe the teens are definitely coached to act that way.
  13. Tywithay - Did you use a leader when you tried it? My lake doesn't have an abundance of cover that can cause abrasion except for docks. Early this year, I caught a 7.6 that wrapped the Nanofil around a boat prop at a dock. The line held up as I moved in to unwrap it. It was beat up, but it held. That said, I would agree that if you had a lake with heavy cover, Nanofil wouldn't be my first choice. Then again, with heavy cover, I also wouldn't choose a spinning setup.
  14. It was a chilly 60...
  15. Actually, the phrase is "holier than thou". Why would you be respectful to someone who is not respectful to you? Manners & etiquette are an important part of society, but being courteous to telemarketers who have no respect for you or your privacy is like holding open the door to the preschool for a pedophile. Cold calling is one thing. Repeated hounding of people who have requested not to be called is another. By chance, have you ever experienced the "magazine sales" ghetto kids that they bus into middle class neighborhoods who try to sell using guilt?
  16. I may be the only person on this entire forum that uses it, but I have been very happy with Berkley Nanofil for my spinning rods. I tried some because my son got a spool for free and have used it on all my spinning setups since. It casts better than anything I have ever used, I would guess it increased distance at least 33% (no exaggeration). It is no stretch, so it is real sensitive & great for hooksets. I fish fairly clear water, so I use a fluorocarbon leader, anywhere from 8" to 4 feet depending on what I am throwing. Have had no issues with the knot between lines as long as I tie it properly. One of my rigs is used to skip wacky Senko's, so it often begins reeling in slack line. With monofilament & fluorocarbon (which I use on my casting setups), I used to get birdnests after 30-40 casts. This almost never happens with the Nanofil & when it does, it is real easy to undo because the line has no memory. I don't know why others don't use it, my guess is they don't get the knots right. I swear by it now.
  17. So you got to see our only weather phenomena, the Santa Ana winds. For those of you outside the area, our normal wind pattern is an on shore breeze from the ocean (west to east), which keeps our temperatures moderate. However, during the fall, when high pressure builds over Utah, Southern California gets hammered by winds that come from a East/NorthEast direction. They build up speed through Nevada, the deserts & the local mountains and then hammer us with wind that is coming from the complete opposite direction. our airport has to switch the direction of takeoffs & landings. The wind is hot (hence why our temperatures at the start of the week spiked into the 80's), gusty & swirly. Humidity drops down to nothing & raises the fire danger tenfold. Nothing close to a hurricane, tornado or N'Easter, but it is the only odd weather we nearly ever get. Once that Santa Ana condition (Devil winds) ended at the end of the week, our temps dropped to lows in the 40's & highs in the 60's. You are correct, until the sun began to beat down mid morning, I indeed was wearing a parka. Once the temps reached the 60's, I stripped down to my thermal shirt & undershirt. I wouldn't last very long in real weather...
  18. With apologies to you members who currently need an auger to fish, the winter bass season has officially begun in Orange County, California (by my standards). When I went out today, the following criteria was met: 1) Water surface temps dropped below 60 degrees. Started out at 58 in the morning and despite the afternoon sunshine, only climbed to 59. Air temps weren't much higher, I had to wear gloves with hothand packets shoved into them & my socks (thin California blood). 2) Jerkbaits are now a go to bait. Every bass I caught on them hit them on the pause (5 seconds or so). 3) The waterfowl turnover is complete. All of the Canadian geese on my lake have gone south, won't be back until late February. The lone cormorant that visits every winter is here, spending much of his time going back & forth between 2 lighted buoys (I have fished the heck out of those two thinking he knows something, he must think I am a telemarketer & is just messing with me). The coots have stopped fighting and now are one big happy (crapping) flock. 4) No turtles. Usually I see a few turtles sunning or swimming around every trip. Apparently they hitched a ride with the geese. So it looks like I am going to suffer through 5 or 6 weeks of these frigid temps before some prespawn activity begins to stir. In other words, our winter is as long as the NFL playoffs
  19. I would suggest that defending telemarketers is the lamest.I have never asked these people to call me, they are breaking the law by calling me because I am on the do not call list (which they ignore). They are unreasonable, rude people and the only way to effectively deal with them is to be more unreasonable & ruder. A mafia hitman is just doing a job to pay his bills, that does not justify his actions. They choose their job & choose to continue to do it. They are the ones who need to grow a pair & change professions.
  20. Is yellow & golden algae the same thing? From what I have read, Texas has been battling Golden Algae for years & had the most information on it. Arizona had some issues with it in a few reservoirs & urban ponds over the past few years. However, all of the information I find is about what it does, not if there are signs prior to a bloom.
  21. I have a few: Deceased When they ask for me, I start to stammer and say "he was killed last night in an automobile accident". Depending on their response, I may then get irate, asking if they think it is cool calling for a dead man. Down Syndrome I carry on a conversation with them as if I am mentally retarded, which some days is not too far from the truth. The best thing to do is start yelling into the phone "Did I win?? Did I win?? Momma come here, I won a prize". Credit Card When they ask for me, I'll respond "Yes he is here. May I have your credit card number please?". That is usually met with silence, followed by "Wha..What?". I continue "The person you want to speak with is a phone sex operator, so to speak to him, we will need your credit card. it is only $9.95 for 5 minutes & he is really good". One Moment Say that you are really interested, can they hold on for a moment. Set the phone down & go away for a few minutes. Check back with them & if they are still there, tell them just a few moments, please hold on. See how long they will wait. This was the best one I ever heard - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIVfrBFc5og
  22. I am not a battery expert, but I have ruined a few pair of jeans from battery acid, so I have a little experience. You should add water to any cells that are low, use distilled water. However, from what I understand, if the battery is a "No Maintenance" battery, then the problem is you can't completely reseal the cells after you open it up. No matter how careful you are, you will end up leaking battery acid on your clothes, boat and everything else it can destroy. In that situation, it is better to bite the bullet & get a new battery, even though in theory it will work. If the battery is the kind designed for maintenance, then you should be okay. Open each cell and add distilled water as needed & seal them back up.

    Old Days

Hey, I have one of those frogs still in my tackle box, right next to a 35 year old hula popper. I had forgotten how old it was until my nephew laughed at it the first time he saw it.
  24. What do you use to find a lost lure retriever? A lure retriever retriever??
  25. Are you aware if they had any advance warning or did they just wake up one morning to dead fish on the shore?
