As I sarcastically mentioned in another thread, Winter has officially arrived in Orange County. We actually had real weather last night, the temps dropped into the 30's and the local hills & mountains got snow. Typically snow level for a winter storm here is 5000 ft., but this morning we awoke to snow all the way down to about 1200 ft. It is melting quickly, and even though it is 47 degrees (& windy) out right now, it feels much, much colder.
Anyway, the reason for the weather report was I just went out to feed Blutarsky, my bass. Even though it is nearing mid-day, the koi pond still is in the shadows, so the water must be getting pretty cold. Blutarsky is in the middle of the pond (deepest section), underneath some lily pads. I toss in a nightcrawler & for the first time in his stay at my pond, we doesn't go after it immediately. The crawler wiggles on the bottom, about 2 feet away from him. Then as one of the koi shows some interest in eating it, Blutarsky glides over and inhales it partially, half the worm hanging out of his mouth. I toss a few more nightcrawlers in, literally inches from his nose & he doesn't touch them until they have been on the bottom for 5 or 6 seconds. Remember, this is a fish who when the water is warmer, will grab anything the instant it touches the water. I wish I had a set of fishy long johns I could give the poor dude to warm up. Maybe I should throw a few of those hand warmers in the pond...
While watching him, it is easy to imagine being out on the lake and this being a fishes reaction to your offerings. I tend to fish fast, this has got to pound into my head that during the colder months, I best really slow down. Bounce that dropshot right in front of their nose and don't be in such a hurry to move it. Thank heavens the forecast is increasing warming for us over the next few days, hopefully when I go out on Saturday, the fish will have begun to thaw out a little.
