  1. Yeah, mine will be console mounted. I was also looking at the Elite-5 but don't want to spend that kind of cash right now. The Elite-4x HDI is slotted right in the middle and I have noticed you can't get a much better unit without jumping way up in price. I think I will order one.
  2. How do you like the Lowrance Elite-4x HDI? I am considering options in the 200-300$ range and have been giving this unit a serious look.
  3. Hey Wayne, No step on the bottom of my boat so all good there. The transducer is just to the right of the hull strake and not in-line. I have ordered a new fishfinder/transducer and will install it and see if it makes a difference or not.
  4. Thanks for the help/suggestions. I am unsure of what I am going to do. It's a crap unit for sure but not sure I want to upgrade right now. Anyhow I have attached 2 photos of my boat if you guys could take a look and tell me what you think I will go from there.
  5. Too funny, I have been thinking this exact thing but I thought I would explore the placement of the transducer first before I condemn the unit. I know it's a cheap, below entry level unit in my opinion but I gotta say I am quite disappointed in the unit. I wanted to make sure transducer location was correct before I considered upgrading. Will this transducer work with other units? I really do not know a whole lot about them.
  6. Thanks for the input. It pretty much stops working above trolling speed. I have tried adjusting it on the bracket some (moved up and down) and played with the angle but the result is the same. I have checked it at wide open and it looks like I am getting a pretty good rooster tail off of it. I will take a photo of my actual boat and post it here later on.
  7. Greetings, I recently purchased a new 2014 Tracker Pro 170. It came with a Lowrance X-4 Pro fish finder (not impressed with the unit). The manual says it should work at wide open throttle (I really just want depth reading, not a complete picture/graph) but it doesn't. After doing some research I believe it's how and where the transducer is mounted. I found a photo online (not my boat) of the transom of this particular model. My transducer is mounted in just about the same spot. Can anyone tell me if this location is correct, and if not what the correct location is?
  8. I have both. My opinion is both are excellent reels. I find myself using the Revo S more, though my opinion is biased towards Abu Garcia so take it with a grain of salt. No reliability issues with the Revo S or the Citica but I haven't had the chance to use either of them extensively. My vote is for the Revo S.
  9. Darn, Wish the Vertias was still on sale for 39.99, I have been wanting one. But I am also considering the Duckett Ghost as well.
  10. It is my understanding that stronger braid is of similar diameter as mono (I think 30lb braid is equivalent in diameter to 8lb test mono in spider wire stealth and power pro) so you can use up to 65lb Sufix or power pro braid on a stick that has a max of 17lb test mono. But it does vary by brand and there is a chart that spells this out. If I am incorrect on this I am sure I will be corrected.
  11. OP, When I was looking to buy a new stick for a frog setup I checked out the mojo bass and saw on their website it was purple. No way would I buy a purple rod. I went to the local DSG and they had the line of mojo bass rods and they were not the same color purple like the website showed but more of a black cherry color. I bought one and it looks fine. I still think they need to change the color though as I am not too wild about it, but it's a very nice rod.
  12. The Abu Garcia Orra S has an alloy frame, it is not plastic. The components are also pretty corrosion resistant with stainless steel bearings, main shaft, and other components. It's a great reel and comes with a braid ready aluminum spool and a spare spool for mono, but you can tie mono to the aluminum spool. I use mine almost every time I go fishing. The Pflueger President, as mentioned, is also a great reel. Very smooth with 10 bearings but has a graphite body and rotor. You may see this as a negative but I do not. Of the two reels I prefer the Orra S. I do not saltwater fish but if you plan to do mostly saltwater fishing then I would more than likely go with the reel that is made specifically for saltwater, the Penn. If fishing freshwater then the Abu Garcia Orra S has my vote. My opinion is probably a little biased as I use a ton of Abu Garcia gear, but I have had no quality issues and their support is top notch should you need it from what I have read. They are also quick to respond to the emails I sent them with product questions.
  13. My experience with the Pflueger President is the same as yours. Amazing reel for the price and quite possibly one of the more underrated spinning reels out there for less than $100.00. I tried a Shimano Sonora and ended up returning it for another reel, but I am currently considering the Symetre or Saros.
  14. I like the Abu Garcia Orra S. Comes with 2 spools and has an alloy frame. Should be able to pick it up for around $70.00. I also have a Pflueger President that I like as well.
  15. Thanks guys, I will take it out a few more times and see what happens.
  16. Yeah I am thinking it's probably just me getting used to braid and learning how to set the hook by not using so much force. I will see what happens on my next outing. I did check to see if the line was slipping on the spool and it did appear to be tight.
  17. Yeah that is the only thing I can think of aside from a problem with the reel. I may check the drag washers and see if they are dry. How hard should I set the hook using braid? Using mono I'd give it a good yank but looks like it wont need to be as hard with braid?
  18. Is it possible that I am setting the hook too hard and causing the drag to activate? I am new to bass fishing as of this summer and completely new to braid and quite used to monofilament line. I know braid has no stretch like mono does.
  19. Well it sounds like the reel may be the culprit. In that case I can buy a new one and relegate this one to lighter duty with mono line which I haven't had a problem with. What is a good reel for frogging in the $150 ish range? I was looking at the Daiwa Tatula Type-R but got a great deal on the Revo SX.
  20. Yes, this is a brand new reel. Unfortunately for me I do not have the luxury of taking it back and swapping it out for another one. I ordered this one online. I can send it back however if it is a problem with the reel. And what I mean is that the line is spinning off the spool when I try to set the hook. If I set it at max drag it doesn't do it, but only if it's at max drag. Otherwise when I go for the hook set, I can hear the clicking of the drag system and I can see the line coming off of the spool. Is it possible to use too much mono for backing? I am not sure how much I used but probably 1/4-1/2 of the reels capacity for mono and the rest for braid which was probably around or less than 75 yards.
  21. Hey guys, I recently purchased a frog setup and I am having some issues. I have a St. Croix mojo bass slop-n-frog rod with a Abu Garcia Revo SX baitcasting reel and 30lb spiderwire braid. I filled the spool partially with 12lb mono and then attached the braid to the monofilament and finished spooling the reel. The issue I am having is the drag/hook set. When I had a fish on and go to set the hook, the braid spools out and I cannot set the hook properly. Thinking I had the drag set too low I turned it up some and still had the same problem. I had to max the drag out and the problem went away but I know something is not right. Is it possible that there is too much braid on the spool? Can anyone help me here? I pulled in a bunch of Bass today with this setup so I am very impressed with how it worked overall but got to figure out the drag issue with your help/input. I also used a LH lunker frog. They hit it hard but by the end of the 4 hours of fishing it was toast. The colored paint was flaking off and the legs were either bit off or detached somehow. The hook also tore the belly of the frog completely open. I could not use it anymore but loved the presentation.
  22. Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I have some new knowledge to take with me. I am currently fishing a smaller lake and spend most of my time in the inlet for this lake. It's been hit or miss. I am going to look into other lakes in the area as well.
  23. Hey guys and gals, Made my way here by watching bassresource's youtube videos on various topics. Big +1 to Glenn for taking the time and effort with these videos. Very helpful and direct to the point. Anyhow I am getting into fishing this summer and haven't fished since I was a kid. I am building up my gear but would like some tips on finding the largemouth. I am from Maine (any other Mainer's here?) and my first time out in years I caught a monster largemouth (well it's the biggest fish I have ever caught, you can see it in my avatar). That was about 3 weeks ago. Since then I haven't caught anything but a bunch of chain pickerel and perch and the occasional smallmouth. Not knowing much about fishing, where do these guys hang out this time of year? I have been using spinners, texas rigged plastic worms, jigs, and floating rapala's. I have mainly been fishing shallow waters so that may be the problem but tried some deeper waters and had very little luck. I am fishing from a boat. Any help is much appreciated and I look forward to being a part of the forum here.
