  1. I've looked into this a lot lately and I'm pretty interested. The Tenkara rod is simple, looks like fun with small fish, and is less expensive than buying a rod, reel I won't use, and 90 feet of line that will never be used past 20 feet. Anyone else have experience with these rods?
  2. I have looked at these rods... Pretty cool idea. Problem is there's only one shop around me that carries it and they have a pretty small selection. Ill add this to my list of consideration though

  4. Nice! Lots of streams here in CO have those 3 plus cutthroats, but I've only ever caught 2 at a time.
  5. I started fly fishing this past spring and love it. Now I have found that I fish small creeks with 6-10 inch trout a majority of the time and my 9 foot 5 weight feels like too much. Now I want a lighter duty rod around 8 feet for these spots as well as bluegill and small bass. I am torn between a 3 and 4 weight. I plan on using this for dries(size 12 To size 20) and an occasional dry dropper or light nymph rig– I'll use my 5 wt for streamers, big nymphs, and bigger fish. I think a 3 would be better because a 4 is very similar to a 5. I like the idea of a 4 because of the versatility. I could use the 4 on bigger rivers for dries. it could also handle wind and bigger fish better. I also wanted a 4 wt in the first place as my first rod, but internet articles and cabelas sales associates convinced me to buy a 5 wt instead. Also any rod recommendations around 250?
  6. I am in the market for a new 5 weight line. 60 bucks is my limit. This will be my only line on my only rod, so it needs to cast dries, nymphs, and streamers( not big, only up to size 8 or 10). I use a 9 foot 5 wt Echo Carbon, which is pretty slow for a graphite rod, so I don't need much help loading the rod. I will be casting 15-40 feet ( plus ~9 ft leader) plus or minus a few feet. I have used the rio mainstream trout line this past year and liked it, but I would like something more durable. I've checked out the sa frequency trout and the rio avid trout, but I'm open to anything in my range.
  7. I am headed to cape Canaveral FL for the holidays and would like to fish in the Indian or Banana river, probably with a guide and preferably with fly rod, but I could mix in some spinning if i need to. What is the fishing like around this time of year? Any migratory fish around? Good area for a beginner inshore trip? I tried earlier this year on a spinning rod but found it hard to do anything without a boat, so I want to try with a charter/ guide- any suggestions?
  8. Check this out: http://www.theoutdoorlodge.com/fishing/species/snappers.html where did you catch them?
  9. green sunfish. If they got any bigger they might start eating peoples dogs
  10. Ive never done it but its real popular here in Denver to catch them in the south platte with flies.
  11. I did something like this this summer. I didn't fish or catch fish everyday, but I made up for it on days that I did. I caught a fish (sunfish, bass, trout) for every day this summer and a bit more. I fished about 5 days a week and caught anywhere from 1 to 20 fish each time.
  12. check out this article on solo hero shots- http://www.ginkandgasoline.com/fly-fishing-photography/getting-the-hero-shot-when-youre-fishing-solo/ My personal favorite is the underwater camera. Now on the fish- congrats on an awesome catch. Trout amaze me- you can catch a 6 incher in the same trip as a 24+ incher and they're both tons of fun.
  13. steelhead, golden trout, tarpon, permit, mako shark- in no particular order
  14. I cant imagine having any fun playing those sierra fish on a bass rod. Most trout up there are pretty small, more suited to a very light rod.
  15. Lol just noticed that I posted an accidental screenshot of a picture. Here's the right one!
  16. Today my dad and I snuck over to the creek before the family Labor Day barbecue. It's really starting to look like fall in the CO high country. That's not a bad thing though, Look at that brookie! Don't know what female doesn't want to spawn with a fish done up like that.
  17. Could trout work?
  18. Are there any good places to catch smallmouth in Colorado, preferably around Denver? Just curious, hopin to cross another fish off my list!
  19. Problem is most low priced rods skip the seven weight for some reason. I wouldn't want to step up to an eight weight as that just seems like way more than I need. Also I have an echo carbon 5 wt, a pretty slow rod for graphite, so I figure that a faster 6 wt would be different enough. Not sure though, that's why I'm on this site! Thanks flyfisher.
  20. I've got a 5 wt fly rod for trout, but recently I've been getting in to throwing heavy streamers for trout and bass. I'm now looking into buying a 6 weight with a fast action for chuckin heavy buggers ~40 feet. Also I would not like to spend too much- 100-200 max. Already have a 5/6 Lamson liquid that I would buy another spool for. Any suggestions?
  21. Probably headed to the Banana / Indian River area around Christmas... Good fishing then? I've got no clue being from Colorado, trout are different here!
  22. Those guys are a ton of fun. They'll bit stuff when bluegill and bass won't! Fight hard and get fat too!
  23. To you, what is the ideal fishing experience? I am curious what other people on here like as far as species, water, location, fishing type, and anything else in a day of fishing. To me its like this: middle of the day, midsummer wet wading a small shallow stream, at 8000 feet, with no one around but whoever I chose to bring with me, with a fly rod in my hand, watching brook trout smash the biggest, ugliest combination of foam and rubber legs in my fly box. Sure there's bigger fish out there, but none have the same reckless commitment to a fly almost half their size, or skin painted in a prettier way. Why rip your hair out trying to catch a trout with a size 24 nymph in a hole that 4 other guys are casting to when there are brookies to be caught in a stream those other guys don't even know about?
  24. I made a post on here not too long ago about specific waders, but now I've got a more broad question.I have decided that my next fly fishing purchase will be a pair of breathable waders. I have never owned a pair, I've only fished from shore or worn Chaco sandals and shorts, so this is an entirely new world for me. My question is about whether waist high or chest high would suit my needs more. I want to spend 100-150 dollars, if that sways the vote at all. I will be using them mostly in the spring and summer, along with a bit of fall fishing, and maybe 1-2 days in the winter here in Colorado. I will be using them in water shin to thigh deep mostly. I am drawn to waist highs because they seem to be more like normal pants, making movement and adding/ subtracting layers of jackets easier. I also feel like chest highs are better because of added protection if I step in water deeper than expected, but they seem awkward and hot. Any advice and opinion is helpful.
  25. you can usually find a fly shop that rents pretty nice equipment, or you can use a fly with some sort of weight or bobber on a lighter rod. If your not familiar with trout fishing or fly fishing, I would recommend looking into a guided trip; guides can show you so much more in real life than anyone on the internet. trips can be pricey though, so don't feel like you have to spend 500 bucks for a day on the water to enjoy the area.
