  1. I ended up going to walmart to get some hooks, and walked out with a $16 shakespeare, and put my lews tournament pro on it, should be perfect. Thanks for the info guys
  2. hey all, Im going on a trip to the Sierra's this weekend, going to do some fishing which I haven't done in a while and unfortunatly do not have a trout rod at the moment, mine broke a few months ago and just havent replaced it yet. I have my St. Croix Avid X 7' M/F spinning rod that I will be bring with me, my question is, will that be too much rod for trout, and what can I do to make the set-up acceptable for the couple days I will be fishing, maybe using mono to help with some of the shock?
  3. I love all of my avid x's, fantastic rods, especially the m/f and mh/f
  4. I have a couple avid x's, they are fantastic rods. I have the 7' m/f spinning rod and a few of their baitcasters. I pretty much use all my finesse techniches including drop shot. I don't have any experience with the other rods you mention, but I really love the avid x line, light, sensitive, and I love the split grip design on the rod as well
  5. its was on there fb page, might still be up. I don't remember the exact winners off my head, but I remember one was a police officer from springfield where lews hq is at
  6. I always keep 6,7, and 8 lb sniper with me, I just really like the 7lb, I have gone down to 4 and 5lb sniper, but that's pretty rare for me even out in our super clear socal lakes
  7. I've never had any luck with the palomar, a lot of people use it, but I seemed to break off quite a bit. So far I haven't had one break off with the double uni and feel I can really smash on them with that knot
  8. no, San V is supposed to be open again between 2015 and 2017, my guess is towards the 2017 mark or even later. I can't wait, never had the chance to fish there but I hear all the stories from some old timers, I will definitely be there on its opening. Theres a few lakes close to me in the San Diego area that are almost completely dried up, most are at half pool, the lakes that are producing are extremely pressured, and some that rely on runoff like lake hodges (has a lot of runoff from the farms that are causing the water to deplete oxygen rapidly, adding phosphorus and chemicals to the water) are going downhill very fast. Hopefully the El Nino that's supposed to come in the fall and through the winter (please pray) will fill up a lot of our lakes and the fishing will get really good, fingers crossed!!!
  9. double uni knot, its the only knot I use now, It will take you a while to learn it, but I've never had it fail on me once, super strong, and I can't stand the palomar
  10. I love my team gold spinning reel, you can get them for about $110 on the bay, totally worth it in my opinion, I will get more definitely
  11. I use my 8.0:1 super duty for pitching, flipping and frogs, I love it and helps me be more efficient pitching with the high gear ratio. I also love my bb1-pro for bombing casts, but my tournament pro's are my favorite out of all of them, I wish Lews made the tp in a 8.0:1 and I would be all over it. I use all 7.1 except for my super duty
  12. Spinnerbaits and more spinnerbaits
  13. Could be. I did see a video a while back that Croix was planning on adding more lengths and actions to the avid x lineup, which I would absolutely love, but haven't heard anything other than the avid x
  14. Thanks guys for all the tips, I just ended up going the JLS route, felt safer that way lol. I'm pretty stoked!!!
  15. Anybody know what Lews will be coming out with??? I'm hoping for an 8.1 tournament pro. I'm seeing alot of discount Lews reels at the moment too
  16. I'm only leery because I've been ripped off by a few sellers on there who had perfect reviews in the past, no bad ones, later to find out there profiles were fake, the reviews were fake and lost a few hundred $ in the whole process
  17. I would think I would be safe, but sometimes when someone has no negative reviews on ebay, and all reviews are that positive, I kind of get leery
  18. Looking to purchase my first Metanium. I would like to purchase from Japan Lure shop, but they don't accept paypal credit (used to be bill me later), so I was on ebay and Saitaya Fishing tackle had Metaniums that were priced pretty similarly as JLS. Anybody purchased from this place before?
  19. I use a 7.1 for all my cranking, sounds like it would be insane to use that gear ratio for cranks, but it works really well for me, and I don't burn the baits either, unless I have too. I can really slow it down or burn it super fast. A lot of the fish I catch on cranks come at me, so its much easier for me to catch up to the fish, and not worry about loosing them. I also like to cover a lot of water, making multiple casts to the same target, and the higher gear ratio really helps me with that. I kind of use the Aaron Martens cranking logic, he uses all 7.1 for cranking because it works for him, the same goes for me.
  20. I love all my avid x's, but have never used the regular avid before to compare. couldn't go wrong with a m/f, I fish my 7 m/f spinning with a d-shot, shakey head, pretty much does most of my finesse stuff. There great rods
  21. St. Croix Avid X 7'4 H/F with a Lews super duty 8.0:1 with 22lb shooter Duckett Micro Magic 7'3 MH/F with a Lews tournament pro 7.1:1 with 16lb sniper right now I'm really liking the Missile Jigs Ike mini flip in 3/8 and 1/2oz Basstek tungsten fball and flipping jig in 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4oz Dirty Jigs swim jigs in 3/8 and 1/2oz I like a green pumpkin, brown, black and blue and with the swim jigs I have mainly shad colors
  22. Also hooks are extremely important in hook sets, the thickness of the hook is a big part on hooking the fish. Thicker hooks have much more to go through, while skinnier hooks do not need to penetrate nearly as much fish on the same hook set. The problem is the strength of the hook to its thickness. I think the rod tip, backbone, line and hooks are what sets the hook, they all play a role.
  23. One of mine came in today, the 7 m/m, still waiting on the 7' mh/m. Im really impressed, quality control is excellent, guides line up perfectly, and the rod feels better to me than I had anticipated, its also a little bit beefier than I would have thought too. Im taking it out this weekend and going to throw some squarebills. So far I really like it, and it feels great with a tournament pro. I wish I had more money to get another one lol
  24. gosh, im literally drooling over hear looking at the pics. One of the benefits of living out in California, it can take about a week to get packages from the east coast, both of my rods are supposed to be here Friday. I just want to get out on the water already!!!!!
