  1. How light are the lures you want to throw. I dont think you need a low gear ratio for small cranks. I only use it on deep divers and usually use a 6.3:1 or so on other cranks. Id suggest a smaller reel for light cranks than the tatula or curado. Something like a 50 series shimano, *** concept reels, daiwa alphas or pixy, or other brands smaller reels should be able to handle small stuff under 3/8oz or so a lot better
  2. I picked up a daiwa fuego DIRT CHEAP and im waiting on it to come in the mail. Supposedly its been used only 2 times. A saltwater guy bought it and put a single power handle on it and didnt think it was strong enough for inshore and sold it to me. Since i got it so cheap, id like to add a swept handle and star, and a better spool for casting lighter stuff. Not super light because i love my spinning gear too, maybe down to 1/4oz or 3/16oz. I know the drag stars from the tdz, zillion, and steez will fit. Im wondering if anyone has tried the zaion star off the tatula r? I havent gotten the reel yet, and when i do i have the tatula to try it, im just wondering if anyone already has so i dont take them both apart if it wont work. The other question i have is if the sv1000 or any other sv spool or rcs1016 or 1012 will fit and work. Ive heard theres gaps that cause problems and you have to make custom spacers, and ive also heard there is a tiny gap that line never gets caught in. Im wondering if anyone has tried any of the sv spools in a fuego or tdz100m and if so what the results were. Im not one to sink a lot of money into reels. Usually all i do is get it professionally cleaned and relubed, put carbontex drag washers in, and maybe a set of the power septon knobs on my shimanos, so im kind of new to tuning. I have a friend with a fuego who used a 95 mm aluminum lews handle that was 30 bucks new and slapped it and a 100m spool in his fuego and i like the way it casts and retrieves better than any reel i currently own, unless of course until i get mine and put together what i have in mind lol. If anyone has also used a 100m spool, a 1016 spool, and a sv spool, which has the most controlled casting yet can still wing lures out or at least get good distance with smaller weight? Sorry about the book, im just excited bc ive always wanted a fuego and i dont want to waste money trying stuff if someone already has
  3. The sv spool from daiwa is supposed to be awesome for both skipping and casting lighter lures. It fits several daiwa reels
  4. Best advice i can give is hunt for sales and don't be scared to pick up used stuff to save money. All my rods were on sale for around half off retail, my reels almost all came used off forums like this for around half of new, and most of my lures were bought on clearance if new or off tge for sale board. Getting lucky craft baits and other high quality baits used is the only way i can afford a good lure selection with 3 small kids lol.
  5. Id wait for a sale and get a pro qualifier reel and one of their store brand rods to put it on. Or line and lures if you already have the rod you want
  6. I dont think you will find one for 100 unless its very rough cosmetically. Ive seen them anywhere from 120-150 on various forums like this one
  7. Id try a mattlures ultimate bluegill or u2 gill and the little creeper sunfish. Also the hardgill if you can find it and maybe a jackall gantarel or giron if the cover isnt too thick. Ive used all these except the gantarel with very good results in ponds much smaller than that
  8. Lews, pfleuger, bps, and many other brands handles by the same oem manufacturer should fit. Daiwa handles will also fit
  9. Sbould be able to order from daiwa or call gary at the tackle trap. Or maybe you could trade it for another reel with the gear ratio you want. I like the orange myself but im a tennessee fan lol
  10. You could go daiwa or shimanoand get one made in japan. I think only the higher end ones though. Or if you dont mind used find a daiwa tournament ss made in japan. Definitely not flashy but will last forever
  11. I have 2 boxes for the 300 size with all the paperwork, took, and extra brakes if anyone needs one or both they can have them if they pay the shipping. I never owned the reel, but came across these going through some stuff. The reel sounds pretty neat. I think its the last us made quantum reel. If try it for deep cranks or swimbaits
  12. Id say lighter lures are definitely doable on a mh casting rod as long as you get the right one. I wouldn't suggest it on a stiffer mh rod like a veritas or st croix. Id look for a rod with some more softness in the tip section so you can get decent casting distance. Most reels can handle it, as long as you pick the right rod
  13. I go the opposite when fishing ponds, especially in spring. My favorite bait in ponds is a mattlures ultimate bluegill or other bluegill swimbaits. I also like larger lipless baits, jigs, and creature baits. There can be some huge bass in very small ponds. Don't get me wrong I do sometimes finesse em too, but not if I know its a pond that can support a large bass
  14. Where is a good place to get the molds for these. Preferably in larger sizes that accept larger hooks like a 1/4-1/2 oz size
  15. Flukes are one of my favorite baits also. I use an ewg and a dab of super glue at the nose to hold the fluke in place. The hooks with keepers like kvd grip pins work great and so does the corkscrew keepers like on swimsuit hooks. I prefer the unweighted owner ones with the centering pin. You can also try nose hooking them like a drop shot if you are fishing open water. They seem to have more action IMO when nose hooked
  16. I use a 6'3" medium power/fast action Fenwick elite tech smallmouth. I like a shorter rod because I work the rod almost vertical with hard snaps 90% of the time. If you can find one of these rods I definitely recommend it. Throws anything from 1/8 oz to 5/8 oz a long way for a short rod. It also doubles as a great rod to skip docks and trees with
  17. All these colors listed above are good. Lipless baits are one of my favorite ways to fish. My absolute favorite is the orange belly craw redeye shad. I fish it like im stroking a jig. Let it sink to the bottom and rip it up a foot or two like a crawfish trying to escape
  18. I use rogues, long a's, pointers, xraps and all sorts of other jerkbaits. Rogues definitely work. I like the smaller suspending size in the chrome colors
  19. Black or white cavitron with a red blade. I dont really have a reason other than that's what i catch the most fish on
  20. Yes i have some in 1/4 oz. 3/8 oz is my favorite. Black or white cavitron with black, gold, or red blades are the only buzzbait i throw
  21. The pfleuger spinning reels get great reviews on here. Id say you cant go wrong withe the supreme or president. Personally i like the lews reels. You could get a tournament hs spin for 80 or a team gold for 130. I have both and love them. The team gold is a little lighter and smoother, but both have great drags and are light for their size. If i was in your shoes id look at getting a president or the old model daiwa exceller(ive seen it on sale as low as $42!) And its a great reel, and then using the rest of what i had to spend on a more sensitive rod. Dont get me wrong i have an ugly stick and like it for catfish and some treble hook baits, but i wouldnt want it to be my all around spinning rod. Not enough feel for me
  22. Id vote daiwa zillion or shimano chronarch for baitcasting. There are guys that have used them daily since they were released and fished them hard, and never had a problem as long as maintenance is done. Spinning reels the daiwa tournament ss 1300 would definitely get my vote. There is a reason they have made them so long and they are bulletproof. Lots of saltwater guys swear by them. I had one from when i was 9 years old until i was 26(a few years ago), and caught pretty much every fish its possible to catch in my area on it from trout to catfish to stripers. Never had a problem and felt the same when it got sold as the day i bought it
  23. I use the slim 3600 box in my bank fishing backpack and it works great for me. Plenty of room for everything i need and gives me room to stuff another 3700 box full of lures in my backpack
  24. I have 2 of the tournament high speed lews reels and a team gold carbon, all in the 300 size. The tournament reels are lightweight for their size, have a smooth strong drag, and great line management. I havent had a wind knot yet and they have handled every fish ive hooked, even hard running stripers and wipers. I highly reccomend them. If you have the extra cash id recommend the team reel as its a little lighter and smoother, but both are excellent reels. I cant comment on the shimanos, ive only owned a couple and didnt care for the new ones whem i tried my friends. I switched from daiwa to lews in spinning reels and like my team gold better than any daiwa i tried i that price range
  25. I used to throw a lot of the paddle tail baits, and caught some pretty good fish when they first became popular. Now if i throw the paddle tails its usually slow rolled near the bottom with a big jighead. I mostly throw them on 1/2 oz to 1 oz jig heads. If im fishing shallower i like the hudd 68 if theres shad present and mattlures ultimate or u2 gill if i see a lot of bluegill or im fishing a small body of water with no shad. If you fish any ponds or small lakes id definitely reccomend the mattlures baits, my 5 biggest largemouth ive caught came on those out of small ponds
